Compact Flash, EXT3, and IDE - a bad idea?
Hi All,
I'm currently running an embedded linux system (arm) with a CF card mounted as EXT3. I'll copy some system details below... Anyway, I'm getting some drive errors and I'm wondering if they're due to bad/old drivers, something with EXT3 and CF latency, or something else entirely.
These are the errors:

State of Vorbis
Hi folks, some notes about goings on.
After opportunity to think aloud, I have the pieces of the VQ system more
or less in place. I need to finish the codebook generation core (this is not
libvorbis code, but an external utility). I then need to write the encode/
decode/packing code that makes use of the codebook. This future code is
already specced.

Generating help files for a function
Hello everyone!
I'm in the process of writing a package, and I'm using the lovely "R
Package" book as a guideline.
However, in the midst of my work, I discovered that I had omitted a
function and am now putting in it the package. Not a problem. But the
problem is the help file. What is the best way to generate a help file
"after the fact" like that, please?

Ext3 patch against 2.4.9-ac10?
Does anyone know if there's a patch out there for 2.4.9-ac10? I'm investigating what's involved to go from ext2 to 3.
Thanks!

Capistrano / developing on win32 / deplyoying on Linux
Hi,
I''m new at rails and am in the midst of deploying my first app to a test
server. The app was developed on windows. I used Capistrano to deploy,
and found a few issues:
1) I must chmod 755 dispatch.cgi each time I deploy
2) script/parse/reaper also doesn''t have the executable attributes so
the deployment fails.
3) database.yml as checked out from svn isn''t

librarian-puppet vs git superproject?
Can anyone comment on their experiences with librarian-puppet or using git
superproject with per puppet module repositories? We are in the midst of
determining which route is optimal for our environment. It seems like using
git superprojects would mean one less new tool for everyone to learn. What
then would be the advantages of librarian-puppet?
Thanks,

Dovecot LDA munging INBOX access times?
We are running Dovecot 1.0.0 using mbox format (currently in the midst
of conversion from UW IMAP). We discovered today that the Dovecot LDA
is accessing the user's INBOX at delivery time! Not only do our users
rely on this access time being when they last accessed their e-mail,
we also rely on it to migrate "inactive" users to cheaper disk.
I consider this a major bug for us and

Windows 10 administrative templates /central store with Samba
Hi list,
This might or might not be a Samba related post. Feel free to ignore it
in case it is too far off-topic
My current understanding is that ...
a) I need those new templates in order to fully integrate Win10 clients
in an AD domain (i.e. with compatible policies).
b) I can only modify policies based on Win10 admx files from Win10
machines (i.e. with the RSAT tools for Win10).
Are there

Icecast is running, but not responding
Sorry, I seem to have buried the issue in the midst of the post.
The issue is, the Icecast is running, but will not display a web interface
at my.ip.address:8000 and will not accept connections from my encoder.
Anyone have any idea why it might be behaving this way?

Recommended passdb backend
We're in the midst of setting up a Samba 3 system as our PDC. I come from a
Samba 2 world, where the passdb backend was smbpasswd. What's the ... er,
'best' passdb backend at this point?
To qualify best, there's no limitations on the type of storage used (LDAP,
MySQL, XML, etc). I'm just looking for something that's going to make
integration with a 2000/XP domain

Attack on Sip server.
Hi All.
Someone is attacking on my SIP server.
There are lot of requests coming in and I am not able to stop it because I
am unable to detect the IP address.
I used wireshark to capture the packets.
Although I am using very strong password for my SIP users but still is
there any way to drop these packets and stop this attack.
I tried dropping packet after matching some string (most of the

Hardware-based Icecast source client
Hi all,
I'm in the midst of creating a turnkey Icecast source client embedded in
a plug computer, using Ices2.
I've hacked together some scripts to automate the starting and stopping
of a live stream (launched by pressing buttons on the device). It's dead
easy once the network/server is configured - you just plug it in, push a
button and you're live.
It accepts any Debian

BeOS diffs
HI,
how do I get mods applied to Vorbis, I'm not a
cvs guru and I don't know much about configure scripts.
BeOS has this little quirk of being 99% POSIX compliant so these
mods are required for vorbis to compile.

Merge done
The merge of the format changes and new psychoacoustics is complete. There's
still tuning work left to do (most notably there's a somewhat
higher-than-acceptable level of background low-midrange/upper bass noise; this
is due mostly to incomplete psychoacoustic modelling data in the 100Hz-500Hz
range) however, at this point, pending bugfixes, the Vorbis 1.0 stream format
is frozen.

parmat error from MASS?
i'm in the midst of using R for a PVA/matrix project. my math skills are
lousy and programming skills are worse. to deal with an error that i
couldn't solve, i changed a parameter that used a new part of a routine
in our PVA package's code:
else if (ES == "ParDraw") {
require(MASS)
(previously, ES was "MatrixDraw" and MASS wasn't called for)

Parallelism
Greetings.
In looking through the mail archives, I don't see any mention of
parallelism of the vorbis code (particularly the encoder). I was
wondering if anyone was looking into this at all? Either with threads,
and/or on some kind of parallel machine (e.g., a Beowulf cluster)? I see
very little mention of threads in the source code, which leads me to
believe that they are only there for

new vorbisenc behaviour
Just got around to compiling RC3 under beos and came across an
anomaly when using managed bitrates.
I haven't changed the code for the beos encoder but I now get double
the bitrates so
vorbis_encode_init(&vi,mediaFormat.u.raw_audio.channel_count,(long)mediaFormat.u.raw_audio.frame_rate , -1, 128000, -1);
now gives me vorbis files that average around 325 - 350.
Is this now the correct
