kernel oplocks (G)
For UNIXs that support kernel based oplocks (currently only IRIX
but hopefully also Linux and FreeBSD soon) this parameter allows
the use of them to be turned on or off.
Kernel oplocks support allows Samba oplocks to be broken whenever
a local UNIX process or NFS operation accesses a file that smbd
has oplocked. This allows complete data

here's a fix for Goldmine (and other ISAM database based programs) on Windows NT/2000/XP clients talking to samba
Goldmine seems to a compiled database application compiled in something likeClipper.
Clipper applications record lock through ISAM like files (DBF).
However, in Windows NT/2000/XP, Opportunistic locking is turned on
by default in order to accelerate file transfer from file services.
[Windows 95/98 did not Opportunisticly lock]
However, opportunistic locking corrupts ISAM and ISAM like

Text File Busy, Samba Locking?
I have searched google for a while and have not resolved this issue.
I am using win98/TextPad 4.0 on a client modifying CGI Scripts in Perl
I open up scripts and make changes then close them via Samba, but when someone requests
the cgi scripts Apache responds with an Error. When I run the script from bash it replys text file busy.
It turns out the there are 2 hacks: um-mount and re-mount the

OSX Server - Excel files
Hi, I am new to this list, so please excuse any redundancy in my
question.
I have 60 Windows XP users who are tied into three Mac OSX File -
Xserve file servers. There is one big problem - ... we are having
issues with Excel files, that on occasion, are not being recognized,
taking literally minutes to load and other quirky abnormalities. Excel
on the XP desktop machines will refuse to save

Samba - Oplocks = no
In order to deal with bizarre MS Office junk, it looks like I may have to
disable oplocks on my samba server. What kinds of problems, if any could
arise from my having disabled the oplocks?

Unix-Windows file synchronization problem
Looking for help !
We have a rather strange problem working with Samba installed
on a DEC Alpha server, when reading an exported directory from Windows.
We are using an application written in C that reads a file from drive E:
where a directory exported from Alpha is mounted. Once the file is read,
all the further readings ignore changes in the file (file is changed
on Alpha). Even as we read it

Problem with Samba caching file contents
Hello everybody,
We are using Samba 2.02 on Sun Solaris 2.51 and 2.6 platforms.
Using these as a file server we occasionally have the following
problem:
- the file is changed on the file server using standard UNIX tools
while somebody else is editing it
- the other user re-loads the file using a Windows 95 client
- the content of the file seems to be the same as before the change

Seeking help with Samba shares & OPLOCKS & Quickbooks databases
I thought I had things figured out, but guess not. I have multi-user
Quickbooks databases that functioned fine on a Novell server but are
behaving badly on a Samba share. I have created a separate share for the
Quickbook databases, users are running Win XP Pro, latest patches, and the
Quickbooks application installed on the desktop. It is a multiuser version.
Server is RedHat ES 3, Samba

locking problems with samba 2.2.1a
Hello all,
I have a samba 2.2.1a server running as the PDC of my
network on a Mandrake 8.0 system with a reiserFS
partition. I am serving for the win98 clients a small DOS
clipper program with a DBF database. The programs run
well on the workstations when there is only one user
using it, when another user try to use the same program
it starts to get very slow. I think this is a lock

kernel oplocks in ctdb environment
Hi
Can anyone advise me on "kernel oplocks" in a ctdb cluster.
I have a ctdb (GPFS is the parallel file system) setup that uses samba
(3.5.8) for cifs and IBM CNFS for NFS. Reading the documentation on
kernel oplocks it seems to me that I can export the same area via samba
and NFS with "kernel oplocks = Yes" .
My logic is that IBM CNFS has shared NFS locking

Debian Sarge (testing), Samba 3.0 RC4 and Quickbooks
Debian and Samba Teams:
I'm having a really weird problem with Samba 3.0Beta2+RC4 on my Debian
Sarge (testing) system with Quickbooks Pro 2002 multi-user
version.
The version of my question is: Does anybody know what the proper global,
share, and permissions settings should be to support multi-user Quickbooks
on a Samba share?

Files Updates
Hi,
I have an Informix program that unload data to a file in a samba directory.
Problem is although the file has changed, I still see the old data from my
Windows 98 SE PC. I only see the updated data after refreshing the snmba
directory numerous times. Sometimes I have to wait for more that 10 minutes !!
Funny thing is this problem does not apply to my friend's PC.
Why is this so and

Very slow initial opening MS-Word and MS-Excel files from Samba
The first time a Word or Excel file is opened, i.e., when either Word or
Excel have not been actively running "recently" (like, say for several
minutes or more), the time it takes to start the application and load
the file seem inordinately long.
Once the first evolution is complete, files open more-or-less instantly
if I close the first document but leave either app running (but

oplock_break: client failure in break - shutting down
We recently tried the upgrade to 2.0 Beta series (just finished testing
Beta 4) on our network. Everything works fine with 1.9.18pl10, but once
we start 2.0 in its place we start getting the following in the log files:

Exclusive oplock left by process
Hi all,
We have a HP-UX 11i server running as a samba server. Users use Windows 2000 boxes with Service Pack 4 to connect to the samba server. Several days ago, we upgraded samba server from 2.0.7 to 3.0.5, and we started to experience the following problem:
The general connection and access to the samba server is ok. However, under the samba share there have been some directories mounted from

I have a deployment of Windows 7 desktops and a Samba 4 file server running
on
Debian 7. The Windows clients have AD policies that tell the desktop to do
Folder Redirection to the Samba server. This seems to work great except for
occasional hangs. When the hang happens, some applications on Windows 7
desktops will just stop responding for 5-15 seconds. Nothing breaks and no
errors happen, but the
