Samba and NIS
Dear All, I am attempting to set up Samba 1.9.18p8 on a Sun E450 running Solaris 2.6. The Sun is configured as a NIS master serving a number of other Unix machines. It is our primary development platform acting as a NIS client and also has auto mounted home directories for users. Samba has been built using GCC 2.8.1 with the following options set: FLAGSM = -DSUNOS5 -DSHADOW_PWD -DAUTOMOUNT

migrating to encrypted passwords
I have an old Samba network that uses unencrypted passwords. At the time, the posts were running win95. These days they are running win98 for the most part, but introducing new machines onto the network means fiddling with the EnablePlainTextPassword registry key. So currently, all the machines use plain-text passwords. I want to modify them all to use encrypted passwords. Naturally, I want to do

my customer wants to export both users' home directories and a public one; as far as the home dirs are concerned, my customer wants the system asks for user's login & password before providing access to grant privacy but wants no password for the public one: is this possible? I tried setting security mode to user (security = user) in the global settings thinkig this would make the

Problems with smbmount
I have a problem. When I mount my CD (witch is on WIN97 machine) using smbmount I do not see all files in all dirs. If dir have more then, let say, 100 files (it is not the same every time), I do not see all files. This is a problem because on my Linux box I do not have CD-ROM, so if I have to install some packages I first have to copy rpm files on disk, and then install them witch is annoying.

WIN 98 password problem
Hi! I'm new on the list, so please, be patient with me! I have a problem for wich I can't find the answer in the FAQ. Until recently I was running a 16 PC-s network with SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 and Samba 1.9.16p11 on the server and mixed clients (Win 3.11 to Win 95 OSR2). The users on the network have access to a PUBLIC directory on they own user directories on the server without

Trouble migrating from plain text to encrypted passwords
Hi, I'm looking for some help to migrate from plain text to encrypted passwords. I'm using smbpasswd for authentication on a FreeBSD 4.9 server with samba 2.2.8. When we set up our server, we had Win95 clients with plain text passwords. As we introduced Win98 clients, we just kept with the plain text passwords. Now we are looking at XP clients and enctrypted passwords. My understanding

security = server & encrypted passwords
Folks, I've missed the latest encrypted passwords thread, so forgive me if this is old hat for some of you. I'm running 2.0.3 with auth being handled by an NT PDC. It seems that some Win95 clients (namely those with later releases of the OS) have problems authenticating. I've got encrypt passwords = yes but it still seems only the old Win95 clients (clear text passwords) can auth

oplock_break failed
Hi, I am running Samba 2.0.3 on Linux Kernel 2.2.5 (SuSE 6.1) in a test environment with a Win NT server (PDC), the Linux box taking over step by step the file- and printserver tasks, and Win 95 clients. Samba is setup with security=domain at this stage. It just happened again what I have seen only a few times before. When I use Outlook 98 on the Win95 machine and want to access the

Encrypted passwords and OS2/Win95/Win98
My LAN is running Samba v1.9.18p10 under RedHat Linux v5.2. Using the SMB services are Win95 and OS/2 clients. It's all running fine. I will soon be adding Win98, though, and I understand that there is a question of password encryption. I'm concerned how the encrypted/plain-text communication of password will affect my existing configuration. If I reconfigure Samba to use encrypted

Samba and NT file issues
Sorry for being repetitive, but I have a question. Can Samba be used for 9x widowze machines accessing files, (access 2000, excel, word...) and have them open, add/modify, save files? The files would reside on Samba box and the user map their way to the files. Any thoughts? I appreciate all of you for sharing you knowledge. Respectfully. --------------------------------------- Tony Ricker

Slow Copy WinXX - Linux/Samba :-(
I never thought it would happen to me, but it did... I have read threads about slow copies from WinXX to Linux/Samba on the list in the past, but I don't recall a concise answer regarding what the cause was. THE PROBLEM: Trying to copy an 8 meg file from Win95 to my Linux/Samba box (named "Nemesis" - for good reason), the transfer speed slows to a crawl. The Win95 copy dialog box

(no subject)
Would you please tell me where to get help. I'm not the ordinary person who will ask for it and bother you just because it isn't convenient to learn from your docs. I CANNOT use Samba because it fails to let me into my Linux server which is running it from my Windows98 network neighborhood icon. It keeps requiring a password. I keep doing what all the docs say to change the password.

Persistent locked files & Win95
I often find with Samba v2.0.3 that files accessed via Win95 (OSR2) stay locked forever after exiting the application that used them. I've got an application called Visual SlickEdit (VSE), which is installed on a shared drive. The drive is an exported Samba share from my RedHat v5.2 (kernel v2.2.5) server. Both the Win32 and OS/2 versions of VSE are installed beneath the same subdirectory

User list problem on Win9x.
I'm a bit confused about user enumeration on Win9x boxes. I've got a couple of machines running SaMBa. One (M2Dual) is running 2.0.7 with security = domain and domain server = M2Hub. The other (M2Hub) is running 2.2.3a with security = user. I also have three Win9x machines. All have user level security turned on. Roving profiles work on all machines and all users. Logon scripts run

R-beta: windows and dynload.
I get an error: Error in dyn.load(file) : unable to load shared library "D:\R_CODA\RW0613\library\eda\libs\eda.dll" with almost all the packages. I tried to use "require" and tried also to copy the dll's to the bin directory and nothing helped. Any ideas ?
