Red crosses on Mapped drives
I am getting red crosses on the mapped drives of some win2k pro machines connecting to a samba pdc. I don't have them logging into the domain and the drives are disconnecting (it happens on win2k server too). There is a parameter for win2k server to autodisconnect the drive after 15 minutes which can be changed with: net config server /autodisconnect:TIME and there is a registry key in

Win2k disconnects mapped samba shares
Hello, I stepped through the archives of this list, but could not find a thread dealing with exactly this problem we are experiencing here. Server HP-UX 10.20 Samba 2.0.6 security = domain deadtime = 500 ... that should be enough The win2k clients map a drive and everything is working fine. after a period of inactivity (about half an hour) win2k somehow disconnects the mapped drive and marks

share persistence problem
After awhile, my connections from my PC to my samba server end up with a red "X" in them (share disappeared) if I leave my explorer window open. If I click on these, they "wake up" and continue to function (and the red X's go away). If I close my explorer window (while the red X's are there) and reopen it , they are gone. An attempt to reestablish these

The case of the disconnecting network shares
Hi Jeremy, No, I don't mean "deadtime". I mean auto disconnect. Specifically, the command "net config server /autodisconnect:-1" was run on each client machine. If deadtime is a server configuration item perhaps you could point me in the direction of some documentation where that is covered. The documentation for smb.conf is, to put it very mildly, incomplete.

Disconnected network drive
I have a couple of Linux directories that are being exported via Samba running under SuSE 10.0. On the Windows side, each of them is assigned a (mapped) drive letter. In the "My Computer" list they initially show up as "Disconnected Network Drive". If I attempt to access a file within one of them, the access fails with an indication that the drive does not exist. Windows XP Home Edition
I am using Samba 2.2.3a-12.3 on a Debian server. All the clients but one are XP home edition. I have a share on the server which all workstations are able to see, view, write, edit, etc. After 15 minutes of inactivity the share obtains a red X over the share icon. I am able to reactivate the share by clicking on the red x with no problems. I understand that Microsoft, in their wisdom, has a

Samba performance
I am involved in the support of a digital audio editing and production system involving Windows 2k clients storing the audio assets on an AIX backend. The problem we have been experiencing is that we open audio files in the editor we are getting a minimum of 2 sec delay between pressing play and the start of the audio playback. Initial tests show that this delay can be up to 6 seconds and that

managing users from smbpasswd rather than /etc/passwd
I have samba installed on a web server (behind a firewall). It's working fine with all the WINS networking here (eg, password authentication from the NT servers, etc). I (we) want this web server - a linux redhat 5.x box currently running samba-1.9.18p8 - to have as few actual unix login accounts as possible. What I want/need to do is to allow LOTS of people in the faculty here

reconnect ssh connection?
has someone come up with a trick to let disconnected ssh connections be recovered without terminating and having to restart rsync (perhaps by wrapping ssh or something)? i have a very large (but pretty stable/unchanging) tree of files that i need to sync daily, at night, between two geographically different servers. i'm using rsync -avz --force -e ssh SOURCE DEST. the connection is

Filtering which identities are forwarded by ssh-agent to a given host
Howdy, I'm looking for a way to restrict which ssh keys are forwarded to a given remote host because we have several ssh domains. That is, I have two keys which I use throughout the day: .ssh/network-a-2014-10-12 .ssh/network-b-2014-11-22 I need to forward my network A key to the ssh gateway host for Network A to allow me to log into hosts on the other side of the gateway but I

directories that change into symlinks
our daily backup is done using the rdiff-backup tool, which in turn utilizes rsync/librsync to do the actual mirroring work. a few days ago we did a refactoring and renamed a bunch of directories. for backward compatibility we maintain the old names by symlinking it to the new names. so, for example, oldname1/ now becomes newname1/, and oldname1 is now a symlink to newname1/. we found that

astcc with multiple access
I'm looking at astcc and it seems that setting up a script that will allow multiple people to access a calling card simultaneously would be fairly difficult. Before I endevour to develop this, has anyone already done it/looked at this/can point me in the right direction? Thanks. -- Mike Nugent <asterisk@illuminatus.org>

portmap vulnerability?
Are there any known vulnerabilities in portmap (redhat''s portmap-4.0-7b)? I''ve been receiving a lot of attempts to access the portmap port on some linuxppc machines I administer by various machines which clearly have no business with mine, and I wonder if this is an attempt to break in to my machines. I''ve searched some archives, but I haven''t yet found any

Broken pipe on ls after doing mount -t smbfs
I have a problem with smbmount. I have a linux server running E-Smith (or Mitel SME server as it is now) which is basically a cut down version of RedHat 7.0 (running Kernel 2.2.19-7.0.8smp). Samba version is 2.0.10. We are connecting to an NT server (service pack 3 - I must upgrade that sometime soon). We have quite a good tapedrive and backup software (3rd party) on the E-Smith server, whereas
