log in script question
All, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction in obtaining a solution to the the following; I want to have the log in script map not only their home directory, but also the group folders as well. For instance, I would have a share with valid users=@usergroup and would want the script to map the directory based on this criteria. Would I have to have a log on script for each

malformed password entry
I have a Sparc Ultra-2 running Solaris 2.7 and Samba version 2.0.5 Most of the time everything works fine, Win95 & WinNT users connect to Samba shares and work. Occasionally, users report not being able to view the Samba server in which case I have them map a drive manually or do a "find computer". There are times when this does not work. I take a look at the logs

overriding "summary.default" or "summary.data.frame". How?
I suppose everybody who makes a package for the first time thinks "I can change anything!" and then runs into this same question. Has anybody written out information on how a package can override functions in R base in the R 2.14 (mandatory NAMESPACE era)? Suppose I want to alphabetize variables in a summary.data.frame, or return the standard deviation with the mean in summary output.

Import of data
I need a few pointers for the import of data into Samba. Here is the set up... I will be getting the data from an NT box that is on the same network more or less (they are our PDC and WINS, we are the DNS). I was told that once Redhat and Samba was set up, it was a simple copy and paste. If I have learned anything, nothing in computers is simple. I have about 200 users private folders being

Printing question
Hello all. I have a question about setting up samba to serve windows printing. I have been trying to research this but keep coming up with conflicting howto's. Can someone give me directions to an up-to-date print howto? It would be greatly appreciated as I am stuck on this. rsync over ssh - lockups with pipe()
For a couple of years people have been reporting intermittent problems with rsync over ssh freezing during a large transfer (typically several GB). I have now gotten to the bottom of these problems, and have written a small test program which demonstrates a deadlock in sshd when doing large bi-directional transfers. Luckily the problem is easily solved by modifying sshd to use socketpair() instead

Rsync Throughput issues
I am using Rsync between a Redhat Linux box and an AIX RS600. We have a about 30gb of database we need to sync to a backup server. Sounds good, right? The problem is that Rsync is so slow when we do the initial dump. We have files that are 1 - 5gb. It takes around 14-20 hours to Rsync the file structure, which means our daily backup will miss that days data because we are waiting for the data

PostgreSQL & SELinux problem
Hi. I just installed Centos 4. I''m pretty sure that I chose to have it install postgresql but when the system came up, it wasn''t there. No worries. I installed it from the net with ''yum''. Unfortunately, when I started it up and it tried to init the database, I got a bunch of SELinux errors: Mar 3 13:24:22 dirty kernel: audit(1109874262.006:0): avc:

'Bad Packet Length' error?
After upgrading my client with 2.4p1, I started getting the folowing errors when using slogin to login to a server: 2f 75 73 72 2f 6c 6f 63 Disconnecting: Bad packet length 796226418. Thinking it was the 2.4 upgrade, I uninstalled 2.4 and reinstalled 2.3 client. Problem still exists. I have OpenSSH 2.3 installed as the server. Maybe OT, but need help
All, The powers that be are going to buy a win2k server that will have a Compaq TL891DLX tape library. I have been trying to get one for my samba box as well. My question is can I back up the samba box to the win2k tape library? I know that you would have to mount the tape library on the linux/samba box, could this be done through samba? IF anyone needs more info, please let me know. Thanks for

slow slow slow
I find apps running in wine are unbearably slow. In particular - HTML-Kit by Chami. I really like this editor on NT at work, I want to use it at home on my FreeBSD box. It works in wine, just very very slowly. I do not have a windows partition. I'm running wine by itself. Any suggestions on ways to get speedier results? -- Chip

'path' entry and printing in smb.conf
Hi, Do I actually need a 'path' entry for each printer share defined in my smb.conf? Or is 'path' redundant in this case as the only relevance it has would be for the printing spool directory, which is defined by my /etc/printcap for all my printers anyway?? The man page for smb.conf seems to suggest that I do need a path entry, so should this be the same as the spool directory

Samba 1 vs. 2, locking and Windows Terminal Server Edition
On Samba 1.9.18p10 and previous versions, each of the multiple users on the same Windows Terminal Server Edition machine would get their own smbd process. With Samba 2.0.x (I'm currently testing 2.0.4b), this has changed so that every user on a WTSE machine uses the same smbd process. File ownerships are assigned correctly, but file locking does not work. If one user on a WTSE machine has a

Converting time retrieved from MySQL
I''m having a problem converting a date retrieved from my MySQL database and I''m hoping someone can help. MySQL stores the date/time as this: 2005-03-08 17:00:34.0 and according to my Pickaxe book Ruby stores times as "the number of seconds and microseconds since [...] January 1, 1970". All well and good. Unfortunately, RoR is converting my date to this:

auto increment id
looking at the unit tests of activerecord leads me to think the db is completely responsible for auto-incrementing the id field and rails does no magic here. can someone confirm that this is a true statement? that being the case - what is the preferred way to write database agnostic sql for one''s schema since each of the dbs has slightly different syntax for this functionality... does
