mounting NFS or SMBFS ?
Hi, I've users connecting to a samba server via WinNTWS 4.0 (home directories are /home/%u) While workstations have both Windows and Linux installed, I want to allow users to connect to their /home directory when logging into Linux. Do you think it's better to automount the folders using an NFS mount or to use an SMBFS mount ? What are advantages and drawbacks of each methods ?

smbfs and cifs
I periodically see smbfs questions get asked on this list, and they usually get one of two responses: 1. smbfs is a kernel module; this list is not the appropriate place to be asking smbfs questions. 2. You should be using cifs instead. (Please let me know if either if these is incorrect.) I was surprised to see, however, that the smbmount / mount.smbfs manpage makes no mention of cifs as being

[Fwd: [Fwd: The results of iozone stress on NFS/ZFS and SF X4500 shows the very bad performance in read but good in write]]
Dear ALL, IHAC who would like to use Sun Fire X4500 to be the NFS server for the backend services, and would like to see the potential performance gain comparing to their existing systems. However the outputs of the I/O stress test with iozone show the mixed results as follows: * The read performance sharply degrades (almost down to 1/20, i.e from 2,000,000 down to 100,000) when the

CentOS mount doesn't support smbfs type ?
Hi, I'm trying to mount a Windows folder from a Linux box with the command: # mount -t smbfs (...) but I get the error: "mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'". Does this mean that CentOS mount doesn't support smbfs type ? If so, how can I enable it ? I'm using 5.1 Any help would be appreciated. Warm Regards, M?rio Gamito

problem with mount -t smbfs
This was working a couple of weeks ago, but it's broken now. When I issue a command like 'mount -t smbfs //server/share /mount/point' I get an error that says " mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //mrbig/grego$, or too many mounted file systems " However, when I issue the command 'smbmount //server/share /mount/point/ it works just fine.

smbfs problems in 2.0.6
I continue to have the same problems in Samba 2.0.6 with smbfs that I was seeing in 2.0.5: (1) After a mount (mount -t smbfs etc.), the volume is often not yet fully mounted. For instance, if I write a Perl script like: system('mount -t smbfs -o password=pwd //MACHINE/SHARE /mnt/machine_share'); system('find /mnt/machine_share > find.out'); the 'find' may not find

Q. Minimal smbfs installation
Hi I am trying to create a boot diskette(s) that is able to mount a remote drive (on an NT server) using smbfs. I have tried doing this, but I can't fit smbd, nmbd, smbmount and smbumount all onto my root disk. What is the minimum set of files required for smbfs to work? What docs should I read to help me? I am running RedHat 6.2 (with a custom kernel v 2.2.14, ntfs and network card

smbfs win2k 2.2.3a error
Fellow SAMBA lovers: I've been using 'mount -t smbfs blah blah' for over a year to do backup/restore. I recently upgraded SAMBA from 2.2.2 to 2.2.3a and the NT Server I was attaching to from v4 to Win2k. Now 'mount -t smbfs' returns an error. However, smbmount with the same parameters works, so I just changed the scripts to use smbmount. I suspect it's the Windoze server

smbfs Unicode patch for 2.4.x kernel
Hi, I'm looking for a patch to the redhat 2.4 kernel to add Unicode support to smbfs. My particular version is 2.4.26. I searched the list archives and found someone named Urban Widmark claimed to have a patch for 2.4.18, but his URL is outdated. If anyone has this patch, please let me know -- this would help me greatly. Thanks! - Julian

samba 3.3 - poor performance (compared to NFS)
I have a system that I'm vetting as a NAS server. It has a 2.0TB XFS filesystem mounted on /storage and I'm doing benchmarks using nfs3, nfs4, and samba. I'm testing via iozone by mounting the filesystem from my "nas client" box and then running iozone on the mounted filesystem. NFS seems pretty fast - ie, several orders of magnitude faster than samba, and I'm
