Issue with running tftpd-hpa in inetd mode?
> Correct. Like most UDP-based inetd services, tftpd is intended to be run in 'wait' mode. When the first request arrives, inetd starts the service but does not read the incoming packet (it can't, because it has no way to pass it along to the server). After that, inetd ignores that socket until the server exits. This isn't critical for tftp, but it does help to keep down the

Feature/bug starting from xinetd
Hi, I hate to have my first post be a bug, but this drove me crazy for a while. I compiled the latest version from source and followed the instalation instructions. I then copied the xinetd.d entries from the Wiki and proceded to test. No matter what I did I could not log on. I found that while I was editing /usr/local/etc/dovecot.conf, nothing was hapening. I then started it manualy and found

Issue with running tftpd-hpa in inetd mode?
Hopefully I'm not out to lunch here. I ported tftp-hpa to our proprietary OS, VOS (at stratus.com). We've always runs the old legacy tftpd from inetd, so I wanted to continue doing so with tftp-hpa. It seems to work okay, but I noticed that the code in tftpd.c has a 'while (1)' loop that has this at the end: /* * Now that we have read the request packet from

xinetd v. tcp-wrappers
I am interested in opinions regarding the use of xinetd versus the use of tcp wrappers. The two programs have similar functionality, but I find xinetd suits my needs better. The biggest problem is the age of xinetd, and AFAIK it is no longer being kept up. Are there any known security issues with xinetd? Another issue is that xinetd makes use of a non-standard inetd.conf layout, but

[Fwd: Xinetd 2.3.10 Memory Leaks]
I just submitted a PR for this (haven't even gotten the confirmation email), but since not everyone tracks the GNATS CVS distribution, I figured that I'd send it here as well. -----Forwarded Message----- > From: Steve Grubb <linux_4ever@yahoo.com> > To: bugtraq@securityfocus.com > Subject: Xinetd 2.3.10 Memory Leaks > Date: 18 Apr 2003 16:18:36 +0000 > > >

Swat inactive, xinetd issue?
Since I've upgraded to Redhat 7.2 I cannot get swat to work, I am using the 2.4.7-10 kernal with samba 2.2.7 installed. I have checked all the applicable files, edited them accordingly as per Gary Fournerat's excellent How-to. No joy. I am pretty certain this is an xinetd issue. I never had this difficulty with inetd. I know that SAMBA is running as I can see the server from this

inetd/xinetd/tcpserver support
I was just thinking how they could be easily supported. This would work, right? : imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login imaps stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap-login --ssl imap-login would try to connect to master process using some named socket. If it couldn't, it would create the master process itself. Master

missing /etc/inetd.conf file in RH9
I have a RedHat 9.0 machine and just updated to samba-3.0.5pre1. I had been running Samba to network two Windoze computers and using a network printer. Two weeks ago my house was apparently hit by lightning which created havoc with my computer/server. I got it going again but have noticed several lingering problems. For one thing, I can't print from it. I was going to check things

Controlling Samba with xinetd
Hi all Just a query from a fellow tech who's playing with Samba. He just asked me the following question, it's something I've never really thought of, but on the face of it could be worth further investigation. Any thoughts?? TIA <snip> Was doing some research last night on high availablilty - led me to a thought which I have seen around before but decided it was not

In other words I don't see /var/log/nrpe.log or whatever. :) And when I tail -f /var/log/secure or /var/log/messages I don't see any entries turning up in them when I hit the client with check_nrpe. I was checking the logs on the client

VMWare Server doesn't like new CentOS installation?
I just got a nice, shiny new machine at work, a Core 2 Duo, on which I just finished installing CentOS 5.2 with a fair number of packages, SeaMonkey 1.1.10, Adobe Reader 8.0, Adobe Flash 9.0, mplayer, mplayerplug-in (both from rpmforge), and I think that was it. Then I went and got the latest VMWare Server, 1.0.7, from VMWare, pulled down their rpm, installed it, and ran vmware-config.pl, which

1.0.rc10 in inetd mode
Hey.. I'm finding that I can force dovecot (setup in inetd mode) into a wedged state by spamming it with carrage returns. As I've not had enough time to familiarize myself with the code.. I thought I'd ping the list before 1.0 is christened. -Phil.
