wins.dat contains 127.0.0.1 for local server
I couldn't really find anything about this in the archives, sorry if it's
been beat to death. I've got a Debian Linux box running kernel 2.0.33.
The machine has two ethernet cards and does NAT between a LAN and a cable
modem link. For some reason, it's got 127.0.0.1 listed for its name:

WINS problems
Hello,
Is it possible to add some static entries to the WINS database?
We would like to add a few (logon-)server entries to it, when wins
starts up.
Why?
We have several Samba servers who act as logon server on different
subnets for different domains. Each logon server also acts as a local
WINS server.
It doesn't seem possible, not even with the options 'remote announce' or

[Fwd: Re: Login script problem!!]
Hello,
I had a similar problem with login scripts. I tracked the problem down to
any entries in the login script which change directory. Taking 'cd' out of
the login script solved the problem. Looking at M$ technet confirmed that
this was a problem with Windows. I hope this helps.
Regards,
Dave

Arguments for Samba instead of NT-Server
Hello,
Can anyone give me arguments that could convince someone to choose for
Samba for file and print sharing instead of setting up a NT-server?
Performance ?
Stability ?
Benchmarks ?
Tests that someone has done?
Things like: "It's free" or "You don't need a powerful machine" are
irrelevant to
our administrators.

Browsing / NetBIOS QQ
Hi all:
I'm not sure where to begin.
My setup here is Samba Version 2.2.7a-security-rollup-fix acting as wins
for a bridged OpenVPN network (if you know what that means).
The net consists of 1 subnet (10.0.0.0/24). The OpenVPN Linux box also
runs Samba, ip 10.0.0.110. There are 2 other windows/linux boxes
"behind" the VPN server.
There are "guests" (Road Warriors)

Browsing problem with Samba 2.2.2 PDC
Hi,
We have been using Samba 2.0.7 for a couple of years on Solaris 7. I am
trying to move to a Samba 2.2.2 NT domain, with a Samba PDC offering
WINS. I have downloaded the Solaris 7 package for 2.2.2 and installed
it on a test machine as a domain master for domain "TEST" and "wins
support = yes", but I am stumped almost immediately with a browsing
problem. My new server

LDAP problems: samba searches whole database
Hello
I use samba-3.0.7 & openldap 2.2.13. When I try to join a machine-account
to the domain, I always get the message "the specified user does not exist".
What happens?
when I try to join, it seems like the whole samba database is being searched.

The single WINS problem: question
hello
I've been reading the thread
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=113286376900001&r=1&w=2) and I have
the same limitation with WINS in a PDC/BDC.
That's why I have the following (experimental) setup:
PDC ==> wins support = yes, passdb backend: master ldap
BDC ==> wins support = yes, passdb backend: slave ldap
I configured some of my XP clients to use both WINS servers

BUG IN SWAT !!
Hello,
I think (in fact I'm quite sure) I have found the following bug in Swat.
In my configuration I use the global option "invalid users=@class".
When I set this option using SWAT, all works fine after "commit
changes".
Users who belong to the "class" group cannot access the server.
But when I erase this value using SWAT and do "commit changes",

Samba-LDAP HOWTO
Hello,
Concerning the upcoming 2.2.3 release of Samba with LDAP support.
Question 1:
Is it possible that you define multiple ldap servers in the option "ldap
server ="?
In the event that one LDAP server is down, the next LDAP server defined can
take over.
If not, no authentication is possible if the LDAP server is not available?

Case sensitive password Win95 client
Hello,
I need an answer to the following problem:
I have a Samba server with domain logons enabled and with
encrypt passwords=no. So I don't use the smbpasswd file, only
the Unix password files.
When I try to logon with a Win95 client (client for Microsoft Networks,
logging on to a domain), people with mixed-case passwords cannot logon
to the Samba logon server. Those with a password in

Important Questions, Advice Needed!!!

Mixed Case passwords and Samba: HELP

Some weeks ago I reported my troubles with mixed-case passwords.
I thought that using the option "password level" would solve my

Unfortunately I have ran into difficulties.

number, one
minor letter and one capital letter.
I have set "password level = 6" (since there can be a maximum of 6

I have discovered what seems to me an unlogic issue in Samba.
I have a Samba logon server with login scripts based on machine names
