setting passwords from Windows
I'd like to change Samba passwords from win95 and NT4 clients. I use security=user. I don't give shell access to every user, so they can't use smbpasswd. I've tested from a win95 client with the precompiled samba-2.0.4b.i386.rpm: net pass \\greg greg test1 test2 I'd used smbpasswd to change greg's password to test1 on host greg prior to this. Here's the smbpasswd

Unix password sync: Any hints?
Hi! I know this is about the most asked question on these lists. I've been searching the archives looking for an answer, but all I can find is the same question over and over... I'm trying to get the Unix Password Sync option to work on my server. I'm running RH 6.0, with MD5 and shadowed passwords enabled, and Samba 2.0.5a (the RPM version). When I try to change passwords using

Using //server/share%username ?
I'm trying to get win9x clients to connect to a Samba 2.0.4b server on FreeBSD 3.2-STABLE. Some of these machines have Windows logins different from the Unix user on the server, and the smb.conf manpage suggests that the "share%username" hack should be used in this case. This seems to work fine on my old 1.9.18p8 server, but not on any of the newer ones. With debug level 5 I see

Item Subject: cc:Mail Text Hi Mike, I got almost the same problem as you when I was using 2.04b on HP-UX 10.20 machine. I can not map to \\servername\sharename to my hpux machine from Win95 successfully when the sharename is different from the client login name. But it's successful on my WinNT. I can not resolve this problem but have a

Weird password problems
Hello, all.. I'm running into some weird password problems with Samba 2.0.5a. Here's what I'm *trying* to do. I have several Linux & Sun boxes that I'd like to share their resources with various DOS/Win9x PCs. I don't want to have to maintain password files on each of the these. Currently, the Unix passwords are shared via NIS, with a SunOS box as the master. What I

malformed password entry
I have a Sparc Ultra-2 running Solaris 2.7 and Samba version 2.0.5 Most of the time everything works fine, Win95 & WinNT users connect to Samba shares and work. Occasionally, users report not being able to view the Samba server in which case I have them map a drive manually or do a "find computer". There are times when this does not work. I take a look at the logs

2 small authentication problems
Hello, I've had those annoyances with the new beta: - in source/passdb/smbpass.c, you have : /* Get smb uid. */ p++; /* Go past ':' */ if (!isdigit(*p)) { DEBUG(0, ("getsmbfilepwent: malformed password entry (uid not number)\n")); continue; } I got stuck there by this entry : nobody:-2:XXX... The '-' made the test fail. I

Encarta install from Samba server barfs
Greetings: I tried to install M$ Encarta over my internal network onto my kids' Windoze 2K machine tonight; the Encarta install stuff is in a vfat partition on the Samba server. The install started, then quit about 14% of the way through - the connection to the Samba server apparently was lost - the installer began complaining about being unable to find the CD-ROM, and I was unable to browse

smbpasswd not attempting to use LDAP
I've only got LDAP configured as a passdb type in my smb.conf, but samba appears to be completely ignoring that and creating an /etc/samba/smbpass file (full output of that at the bottom) my smb.conf has: ldap admin dn = "cn=Admin,dc=byramhealthcare,dc=com" ldap ssl = off passdb backend ldapsam:ldap://ldapmaster.byramhealthcare.com ldap delete dn = no ldap user suffix =

Many thanks for any suggestion in advance: I am using a SPARC ULTRA 60 / running SuSE sparc linux 7.3 as server for our M$-Network. I have read of the problem on a number of posts/newsgroups/webpages - but there a very little solutions - or causes - none of the solutions have worked for me! Basically my samba is happily running and I can connect to it fine from 9x clients and from 2k client as a workgroup. However..... If I try to

Loooooong logon-times using samba 3.5.6 and Windows 7
Dear samba-users We are experiencing some rather long logon times using SAMBA 3.5.6 on Debian Squeeze + Windows 7 and while trying to find out why we raised the loglevel to 5 resulting in a rather large logfile. But this did give us a hint as to why we experience so long logon times. It seems that samba is going through the whole user-database with all usernames and machine-accounts. Eventually

User migration issues
I've been looking throught the archives for a set of things to be done to migrate a install with samba 3.2.5 (lenny) to another server (wheezy) I can cope with the name change, that's no problem, but I'd like to avoid having to recreate the users on the new server, so far I tried this, without much success - scp the smb.conf to the new server - make hot backups cd /var/lib/samba
