WINS serving
Hi all, I use Samba (nmbd) for WINS serving round here. Any one know how to set up two WINS servers (on different machines for resilience) using Samba? Also, whislt I'm on the subject. Suppose I have a machine with multiple (physical) interfaces, each with a unique IP address. When it ('s nmbd) registers with teh WINS server does it register all its addresses? Moreover, when the

Time Synchronisation
Hi. I'm running on a Windows 98 client and an RS6000 with Samba 2.0.7 (latest). I've used "net time \\ibrissde /SET /YES" to sync the times between the two systems ... but if I save a file onto the RS6000 through Samba on a mapped drive the file in UNIX is 1 hour old. I haven't been able to find any help on this so I'm assuming it's a bug !? This was also true

It's just stopped working! (1.9.18p8, IRIX 5.3)
Hi all, I'm extremely puzzled by the behaviour of one of my Samba servers. It's been working fine for yonks, and this morning (abuout 11:32) it just stopped. (mostly) Connecting to shares still works. Navigating the tree till works. Changing (DOS) attributes still works. But actually opening files and reading the contents doesn't work. The client just times out (Win 3.11, and

passwd change program runs as user, not root!
Hi all, I've been working (hard) on password sync (with NIS) here and it's now ready to roll. However, there's a problem. If I use '% smbpasswd -r nnpdc' from the UNIX command line, then the password change program runs as root and the NIS gets updated. If I use 'c:\> net password \\nnpdc' (from an Win98 box) then the password change program runs as the user

create_canon_ace_lists: unable to map SID
Hi all, I'm trying to get a Samba server (which is a member of a Samba controlled domain) to store WinXP Pro user's profiles. The XP user is authenticating against a 2003 Active Directory server, which then tells it to store it's profile on my Samba server. The 'profiles' share exists and is writeable and under some circumstances we can get profiles to be stored there,

Is it possible to store XP Profiles on Samba 3.0.2 ?
Hi all, Can you use Samba to store an XP Pro profile? I'm running Samba 3.0.2a (compiled from source) on Solaris 9. Compiled it against OpenLDAP 2.1.30 and MIT Kerberos 1.3.3 (both compiled from source from fresh downloads today). Am now trying to get Windows XP Pro to store profiles on to this box. The smbd and nmbd seem to run fine. Every time XP Pro goes to create a user's

Default changed (printcap) in 1.9.18p8
Hi all, Am I the only person to have fallen over the following 'gotcha' ? Upgraded to 1.9.18p8 from 19.9.17p5 on Friday. Came in this morning to discover all Printing had died. Eventually tracked this down to the 'printcap name' setting in Samba jad changed. It default was '/etc/printcap' (it must have been as printing was fine up 17p5 and all previous versions).

default for 'writeable ='
Hi all, 'Using Samba' (and it's companion 'Pocket Reference') both say that the default for the 'writable' option in smb.conf is 'YES'. But, http://ie.samba.org/samba/docs/man/smb.conf.5.html says the default is 'no'. Which is right? Mac Assistant Systems Adminstrator @nibsc.ac.uk

Printing woes (Driver uploading, and .tdb annoyances)
Hi all, I'm running 3.0.6 on IRIX 6.5 (compiled from sources) Runs fine for almost all purposes. But I thought I'd have a look at the extra Samba-3 printing facilites today, and they've thrown up some real issues. 1st point. I still haven't managed to get to the bottom of this one, but I can't always add a printer drive to a Samba-served printer. I've been

XP + SP2 + DFS + netbios alias = not working
Hi all, I'm using Samba 3.0.6 (on IRIX 6.5). This is just a 'let you know what I've discovered' message really. I've just installed upgrade a laptop here to SP2 of Windows XP. It then started failing to make network connections. After much fiddling about, I tracked it down to DFS shares. This PC can now connect to the DFS root OKay, but doesn't recognise the entries

USE_WAITPID in IRIX (SGI5). Does it work?
Hi all, I'm running Samba 1.9.18p8 on an SG Challenge (L) with IRIX 5.3 Every so often (maybe once a month (ish)) samba goes mad, and we get loads and loads of 'smbd' processes created which fill up the process table, causing many 'fork() failed: too many processes' errors. Eventually, with a slice of luck we can get to execute a 'kill' command on them and the

Win95 and mixed case passwords (1.9.18p8)
Hi there, I've just tripped over a problem I thought only existed in WfWg3.11. On Win95 clients connecting to a 1.9.18p8 Samba server (IRIX 5.3) the first logon dialog box seems to have a problem with mixed-case passwords. If I have a lower case password, then I can just enter it in the Win95 'Microsoft Network' logon dialog at startup, and all the shares are reconnected. If I

query_name_response: Multiple responses received
Hi all, I've just noticed I'm getting a load of these query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet 193.62.43.24 for name INFORMATICS<1d>. This response was from IP 193.62.43.39 In the log.nmb on one of my (several) Samba servers. I've not had a chance yet to check if it's happening on all of them. Most pertiant question for me is why is it

Doco conflict (smb.conf(5) vs. HOWTO-Collection)
Hi all, There seems to be a conflict in the online documentation as to the 'security =' level and the 'add user script'. http://ie.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#AEN1146 says that you have to have 'security = user' in order to have Samba behave as a PDC. Further on :- http://ie.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#AEN1231 it says

unix password sync doesn't update smbpasswd file!
Hi all, I'm using 2.2.3 on FreeBSD 4.5 RELEASE and trying to get 'smbpasswd' to change the encrypted password and the UNIX password (/etc/passwd). I'm getting strange behaviour. Having worked through debugging my 'chat script', I now have the following situation:- When unix password sync = yes smbpasswd works, but only the UNIX password is changed When unix password

Interminttant trouble with DFS shares on XP clients and 2.2.8a
Hi all, Having just upgraded our IRIX 6.5 servers from 2.2.5 to 2.2.8a, we're now having trouble with the DFS shares that it serves to our site. Browsing (from 'Start|Run' \\servername) shows the folders we've set up. Double clicking on these allows us to go into them and see the DFS pointers. Double clicking on these produces:- \\net\user\homes refers to a location that is
