Safe Win9x?
I want to install a linux samba server to serve 30 win9x machines. I
want to prevent users from writing on the local drives, they should
have write access only to their home dirs on the samba box. These
users have a nasty habit of deleting crucial system files.
Is it at all possible with win9x and samba? Of course NT workstations
could resolve the problem, but that's not an option with these

Problems adding a printer share
I have added an HP Deskjet 600 to my debian etch system, using CUPS. It is
working fine.
I would like to set it up so that I can occassionally print to it from a
Windows 9x machine. This is where I seem to be having trouble.
I consulted the HOW-TO docs on the samba site, but they are quite detailed
and confusing (for me).
I don't want to do anything that will cause the printer to work

NAT proxy concepts

I have been taking a close look at some networking

are imposed by NAT. In particular the constraints impose by

integration samba and OS/2
Hi all,
for some reasons we use a lot of OS/2 clients and cannot change this
situation in the next time, but we want to use an "up-to-date-file-server"
with samba.
My questions:
1) Do we need some special configurations if we want to use a Lan-server
domain controller for password authentication ("security = server", "password

Mapping of Network Drive through win9x dail-up networking
Hi Thomas,
Really Thanks for your advice. I have tried your suggestions but problems still
remain. My findings is that some Windows, regardless of version, can map to
Samba through dial-up networking but some just cannot. I try to find the
difference between these Windows but failed.

Neil

I agree that tools should now start writing media types without the x- .
Parsers should be able to handle both versions.

Open3 progress
Hi all,
I''ve got an initial version of Open3.popen3 checked into CVS, along with a
test suite, a sample program and some of the usual files (README, etc).
This is just Park''s win32_popen package stripped down and modified to match
the Open3 API.
So far, so good. For the first release, I''ve decided that we should strip
it down to popen3 only. We can always add

PDC Newbie suggestion Request
For over a year now we have used SAMBA to give Win9x access to our RH Linux
7.x fileserver. Our office is small and we like to keep things simple so we
went with plain authentication.
If we login we can get on to the fileserver, access shares and our 'home'
accounts that we created. If we type the wrong password we are no
authenticated but we can still surf the web and browse the
