Urgent problem with Samba and Windows NT4...
Hello!
I tried to get some help from the IRC before, but the problem seems to be too
complicated to discuss it there.
PLEASE, be so kind and help me solving this problem, I stuck and I must get
this working as quick as possible.
Here an overview and some details:
In one well protected LAN (so I have no need to encrypt passwords at all,
which simplifies user management on servers in turn because

another nt4 and samba question
Hi, I'm going to scream.
I have a "dell-installed" red hat 7.2 build and I have been attempting to
get it to join my NT4.0 domain with samba... after getting past the old
version of samba that shipped with it and updating to the latest samba
from the samba web site, i still can't join my domain....
Here's the kicker: I CAN JOIN a test domain I set up a few weeks ago,

smbmount codepage/iocharset settings vs NT4
Hi,
I'm in the process of setting up a backup server for a somewhat
antiquated NT4 server. Backup server is CentOS-4 (~ RHEL-4),
kernel-2.6.9-11.EL, samba-client-3.0.10-1.4E, rsync-2.6.3-1,
LANG=en_US.UTF-8. NT4 shares are mounted on the server and rsynced to
local disk.
This setup is working pretty well, however on the NT box there are some
files with names containing odd characters like

NT4 RPC error browsing [homes]
I brought this up some time ago at comp.protcols.smb, which showed
that others have run into the same problem, but so far I haven't found
a solution anywhere. The problem is that since Y2K, I haven't been
able to browse the auto homes share [homes] with Win NT4 (details
below).
Does anybody have any idea what the cause of this problem is, and
better yet, how to fix it?
Thanks,

Broken pipe error when attaching samba 2.2.8a to NT4 pdc
Morning folks,
Need some Help. I have a Solaris 2.5.1 system that runs Samba as simple
shares but I want to attach it to an NT4 domain and use Winbind for NT
authentication. But I get a broken pipe error when I run " smbpasswd -j
thinktank -r testerpdc -U tester -D4". With the debug level set to 4
everything looks good until it connects to the pdc on port 445 then i get

Connect to W2K share from Linux
Having trouble connecting to a share on a windows machine from a linux
machine.
I have been using samba for years to map from linux to windows, but no luck
the other way around.
I've read lots of how-to's but none of them work and don't even mention the
problem I'm having. I always get access denied errors. Tried the samba
troubleshooting guide which does talk about access errors,

Indexing of mails to speed up the IMAP SEARCH command
Hi all,
I use a local dovecot server which is synchronized with my two imap
accounts using OfflineIMAP. This works very nice and is highly usable.
But one thing I'd like to improve is the slow IMAP search. When I
search for a string in the subjects of all messages in a mailbox using
some mail client, dovecot seems to grep all the messages in there.
Is there a way to let dovecot index more

changing smbpasswd from NT4 client (its not happening)
I have been told that Samba automatically updates smbpasswd file when a corresponding
client changes their password on NT, and that this works, even though there is no
domain or PDC.
my problem is that this is not happening for me. Nothing seems to happen on Samba when
NT password is changed.
I have Samba 2.0.6 running on Solaris 7 serving files and printers to NT4 clients in a peer to peer

upper and lower case filenames
Hello,
i have a great problem with copying files via smbmount and smbclient.
In my source-directory on computer1 i have the files
sei001 with size 100 bytes
and
SEI001 with size 200 bytes.
After copy these files to computer2 in the destination directory there only
SEI001 with the size of 100 bytes has arrived.
Samba does the following:
It copies the file SEI001 to the destination and then

Bug report: smbmount 2.0.6 and NT pagefile.sys bug
Hi,
I have just installed Samba 2.0.6 and noticed that the "pagefile.sys"
smbmount bug still exists:
When unsing smbmount to mount an NT4 volume, and doing an "ls" on the
mounted directory, I get:

Automatically setting up printer drivers in NT4
Is it possible to get samba(2.0.6 running on Solaris 7) to automatically
install printer drivers for NT clients?
Most of the documentation I've read only mentions windows 9x, but the O'Reillys
book makes it sound like it
might also be possible for NT. I have tried following the procedure in the
book, but it only seems to partially
set up the printer, allowing me to view spooling

Can't get 3.0.23d from SuSE RPM to be a member in an NT4 domain
Been working with Samba back to 1.9 or so, but this is the first time
I've tried to set it up as a domain member server.
I followed (I think) the instructions on how to do this in TOSHARG
(which are about as disjointed as the book, which I took back), but I
continue to be unable to get the box, running winbind, to reliably
authenticate users off the PDC, which is running NT4 (and I'm not

smbfs failure mounting DAVE Macintosh share
Hi,
I tried to make my Linux box smbmount a remote share originating from a
Macintosh running the commercial package DAVE 2.5. The Linux box is a RedHat 6.0
with a 2.2.14 kernel (with smbfs inserted as a module) and samba-2.0.3; the iMac
ran MacOS9.
The directory to be shared, \\akemi\archivio, contained two files, aaa and bbb.
Here's what happened:

Samba, quotas and disk capacity?
Hi Bernd,
There have been a lot of improvements in Samba since 2.0.5; I know
that the 2.0.7 version is supposed to support unix HFS and VxFS quotas.
Also the "with-quotas" option must be turned on at compile time, so perhaps
your 2.0.5 version was not compiled "with-quotas"...
I tested quotas and the HP 2.0.7 version here and it works the way that Dirk
mentions,

2.0.5 smbmount chokes on chars needing shell-escape
Apologies if this has already been asked, but I couldn't find reference to it
anywhere.
Various windows versions allow characters in share names like " " and ")"
(space, close paren) that need to be escaped when passed to the shell.
However, it seems like the 2.0.5 smbmount calls smbmnt via the shell, and so
if you try to do something like:

3.6.0: smbclient can't access a NT4 share
Hi,
I upgraded to 3.6.0, but since that time, I can't connect to a share on a NT4
Wks host any more:
# /usr/bin/smbclient //molek-04/lightcycler -U administrator
protocol negotiation failed: NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT
I thought it could be something with 'client ntlmv2 auth", what is 'yes' since
that version. But even if I switch it to 'no' it's the same.
