AW: RH 6.1 samba 2.0.7pre3 BUG!
samba does the SMB(!) authentication against machine "a" but you MUST have equal users on ALL machines. How else should samba create files on the unix file system if there is no UNIX user to deal with? It is not a problem of samba, it's a "problem" of unix. The only trick to do this would be to create a dummy unix user and do a "force user" to this dummy on every

Samba Server and 3 W98 workgroups

And my problem is: I want to avoid same users to access the workgroup Net0 (Data and Applications), and others users to the Net1. The Net2 is public for all users. It's possible to do it with a Linux Samba Server? How can I do it? Tia, Sociedade Torreense de Inform?tica, Lda. Av.

Browsing from NT 4.0
Hi James, One of the things that NT does different from WIN9x is that it attempts to 'browse' using a null session. This typically means that SAMBA is going to try to make the attachement for the 'null' username as SAMBA's guest account (by default 'nobody'). On a lot of HP systems the 'nobody' /etc/passwd entry is set as uid -2 and gid -2. These uid/gid

Problem: Samba 2.0.7pre4 --with-utmp on OSF1
I tried configuring Samba 2.0.7pre4 on a OSF1 machine (actually a DEC Alpha running Digital Unix 4.0d) with --with-utmp. starting smb services at bootup on x86 RH6.1
I am running RH6.1 on an x86 with 2.0.6 installed with an RPM. I am confused as to getting smb to start at bootup. It works fine if I start it manually (/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start). I swear, the 5.2 installation had smb start at bootup, but I can't find the difference between the two. Is the answer 1 - edit the /etc/inetd.conf file (swat needed a line uncommented) 2 - edit the

Samba, 20.000 users and concurrent logons: part 2
Hello, I wanted to let you know that I'm able to succesfully work with 20000 users and several concurrent logon sessions. Instead of using /etc/smbpasswd or /etc/passwd, I chose to use /var/db/password.db. I created this file using the makefile which is located in the /var/db directory. I suppose this is an indexed version of /etc/passwd and works a lot faster than the regular flat file. Also
