Am I trying the wrong things?
I'm having some small trouble getting my local lan running the way I want. I have two samba servers, Windows 95, 98, and NT Workstation systems on it (which are also doing some peer-to-peer sharing). It's all one IP net; there's an ethernet switch in the middle, and a couple of peripheral hubs each connected to that switch. Note that I do NOT have an NT Server system; I'm not

strange problem
Hello. I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. I have 95,98 and NT machines and a Linux box with samba 2.2.5 (or what ever is shipped with redhat) that shares a printer to the windows machines. The problem is now: -the NT machines finds the printer! -the 98 machine finds something, but rejects all passwords (it runs encryot. passwd) -the 95 does not find anything at all. (runs encrypt

bug: inconsistent handling of workgroups > 15 chars leads to failed master browser elections
hi, when i give samba a workgroup name with more than 15 characters [the limit for netbios names], nmbd is unable to participate in browse master elections. it appears that parts of internal samba code honor 16 characters and parts only honor 15. details: i used a workgroup name of nodomain.nowhere, 16 characters, on samba 2.2.1a. the samba box was the only member of this workgroup on the

Samba 3.6.1 losing browser elections to WinXP
Hello Samba; I am aware this was a problem years ago... This week I turned up a brand new server to replace an embarrassingly old one. The problem has re-occurred. I expected this to be a problem long ago fixed. I have made the following registry edit to the offending XP machine and restarted Samba. I hope it sticks. I have two questions: 1) Have I missed something in the configuration?

Import USER and PASSWORD Samba3+OpenLadp TO Samba4
I am using AD DC. I already have a domain Samba3 + Openladp, I'm creating this new domain Samba4, but I want to import all users who have already registered in my base Openldap. If it was the same demesne I would use the migration tool, but it's a different domain. -- View this message in context:

How to get relevant dimnames from apply() ?
Hello, in order to vectorize task (of plotting barplots), I use, as probably all R-folks, function apply() instead of for() loop. <R> testarr<-matrix(1:30, nrow=5) rownames(testarr)<-letters[1:5] colnames(testarr)<-LETTERS[1:6] apply(testarr,1,function(x) {x11(); barplot(x)}) #the funcion used is actually more compex, but it doesn't matter </R> Now, how I can propagate

Inaccurate complex arithmetic of R (Matlab is accurate)
Dear All, Hans Borchers and I have been trying to compute "exact" derivatives in R using the idea of complex-step derivatives that Hans has proposed. This is a really, really cool idea. It gives "exact" derivatives with only a minimal effort (same as that involved in computing first-order forward-difference derivative). Unfortunately, we cannot implement this in R as the

chan_zap "Cannot handle frames in 2 format"
I have discovered something quirky in our Asterisk. If I call in to a Zap channel (from an outside POTS line), then transfer the call around several times, I get the above error, after which it will hangup. I believe Asterisk may issue a SIP CANCEL to the extension it was starting to dial. Now when I say 'transferred around several times,' our routing is pretty compex and uses the

determining domain master and forcing elections?
Every now and then one of my lusers sets up a machine which attempts to be a local master and/or a domain master for our workgroup. This sucks since we want our samba machine to *always* be the WINS master server. (we have os level set to 255 for this machine) but appearantly it still loses elections that come up from time to time. The only way I know when this happens is when people come to me

When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when: * There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down. * A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election. Any other times when an election is held? What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two

analyzing results from Tuesday's US elections
Hello: What can you tell me about plans to analyze data from this year's general election, especially to detect possible fraud? I might be able to help with such an effort. I have NOT done much with election data, but I have developed tools for data analysis, including web scraping, and included them in R packages available on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN)

ARGH!! why does my samba server lose domain master elections??
Subject pretty much says it all. (And *please* don't point me BROWSING.txt since I've been there done that and it still doesn't work) First let me vent... What a shit microsoft is for doing the following... creating a browsing protocol where the WINS server is dynamically elected from a possibly infinite set of machines; yet you need to hard code a static address in the

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody. I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since I couldn't find anything, here I am. I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux. A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server, to manage the list of connected computers. However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

US 2004 Elections map
even for people who didn't like the outcome of the US elections this year, it must have been a joy to see all the nice (and not so nice) graphs that were shown. As an exercise, I recreated the map shown on the NY-Times website [ http://www.nytimes.com/packages/khtml/2004/11/03/politics/ 20041103_px_ELECT_GRAPHIC.html ] If you're interested,

causing LMB elections
I've been running samba servers with 200+ W98 machines for some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine. I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish itself as
