on lexical scoping....
The following *might* be of use to you. If you can predict what the various
function invocations will do, I think you have a reasonable grasp of how
lexical scoping works in R (contrary or supplementary opinions welcome).
It is the sort of thing you will find in the references also. If this is
all obvious, sorry for wasting your time.

How to backup from Win to Linux using smb
> I have big problem: I need to automaticaly copy files from Win'pc to Linux

I submitted this one to the mailing list awhile back, but I've made some
improvements, so here it is again.
We have cron run a script every night that backs up all the systems (Win and
Unix) to a single tape. Naturally, the tape capacity needs to be large enough
for all the systems involved.

on lexical scoping....
obviously, everyone has different opinions on what's useful but I always
found this document quite
helpful. I think, in the past, someone said that there are some incorrect
statements in but I'm not sure
what they are.

on lexical scoping....
It seems mostly correct. Here are a few quibbles:
- I don't think "owner" is a good description of the parent environment.
Usually when I use owner in computing, there's an implication that the
owner controls what it owns, is responsible for allocating and
destroying it, etc. Parent environments are targets of a pointer from
other environments that list them as their

Mixing SCSI devices on a single i/f
I have an external HP SureStore DLT VS80 with a SCSI LVD 68 pin
interface and an external HP SureStore DAT24 with a SCSI Centronics
50 pin Narrow SE interface. The cable for the DAT has a Centronics
connector at one end and a 68 Pin Wide to Narrow terminated
connector at the other. The cable for the DLT has a LVD/SE 68 pin
connector at both ends. I have terminator blocks for both devices.

Can't backup Samba share using NT Server across the network
We have a small site with about 100 clients running of a linux box and
samba (which, benchmarks notwithstanding , seems faster than when it
used to run NT) .
We have been backing part of its disk space up using a NT server. We
moved from 2.03 to 2.04b and the backups started failing. The error in
the error log is as follows

Tape backup question.
Hello,
I want to backup my PE2800 on tape but I'm not sure how to do this.
My PE2800 has a RAID5 setup with 2 72GB SCSI disks and a Seagate DAT-2 72GB
internal tape-streamer and I'm running Centos 4.3 with the latest yum
updates.
I'm not sure if this tape-streamer is recognised by the OS properly because
it doesn't show up along with my DVD/floppy
I also recieved with the

Réf. : Backing up both AIX and NT using Samba
Hi Joe,
What you can do is to tell the tape drive to not rewind after the first
backup. You have to select the dedicated device for that.
If my memory serves me, the device which does not rewind at backup end is
/dev/rmt{x}.4 or something like that.
So, the batch could be like this:
tar cvf /dev/rmt{x}.4 myfiles_from_AIX
smbclient ... -Tcga /dev/rmt{x} #after the NT backup,

howto mount a scsi tape drive?
Hi,
after installing centos 4.2 I've noticed that my internal Seagate scsi DAT
72GB tape drive hasn't been recognised in /media or doesn't show up in gnome
when putting in a tape.
Do I need to edit fstab first or load additional modules in the kernel
during startup?
regards, Geert

Backing up both AIX and NT using Samba
Hi Everyone,
My name is Joe and I need some help from the Samba community. I have a need
to be able to backup both Windows NT and AIX files using one IBM 3590 tape
drive attached to a 7017-s80 running AIX 4.3.3.
The files that I need to back up on the NT side are on a box that
cannot be NFS mounted. It is essentially a "dumb box" with minimal
configuration abilities.
I am able to back

synchronizing Samba & Unix passwords
The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to comp.protocols.smb as well.
Okay. Maybe someone knows the answer to a question I have about
password synchronization. The smb.conf man page says that the "passd
chat" string controls the chat between smbd and the local password
changing program. The man page goes on to say that the string can

SV: using samba to backup NT to unix tape drive ?
Hi!
My suggestion: Use Amanda (www.amanda.org, cd /usr/ports/misc/amanda24 && make install with FreeBSD).
It has support for smbtar. Haven't tried it myself, but I hear it's working fine. (I think I have seen a patch for gnu tar, that fixes the path length limit. I'm sure, though...)

Fw: Error attaching tape drive device to KVM guest
A quick follow-up in case anyone else is trying to use IBM tape device
within a KVM guest. I didn't get SCSI passthrough below working, but
there were two alternatives recommended to me:
(1) Use PCI passthrough to give the KVM guest dedicated access to the
Fibre Channel HBA PCI card. PCI passthrough seems to be more solid.
(2) Use ISCSI to share the tape devices and tape changer

persistent generic device for tape changer
I've taken you as far as I can go. ?Now you will have to experiment a
bit for your use case. ?I should point out that at least in my system,
the link with the serial number in it shows up even with the line
commented in the rules file.
As always, YMMV.

persistent generic device for tape changer
Hello Ron,
sounds good. I have 2 tape changer. I persume, udev creates the same
link for both.
Can I modify
SYMLINK+="changer-$env{ID_SERIAL}"
The serial should be unique.

backup and restore of ZFS root disk using DVD driveand DAT tape drive
Dear all,
given a DVD drive and DAT Tape Drive, and using Solaris 10 U7 (5/09),
how can we plan for a total backup of ZFS root disk and procedure to
recover that?
Previously using UFS, we just need to use boot from Solaris OS DVD
media, also using ufsdump, ufsrestore and installboot.
Anybody can point me on how to achieve the same thing when the whole
system disk are busted?

Error attaching tape drive device to KVM guest

i'm trying to configure a host SCSI device (tape drive) so that it is
available in a KVM guest VM, but am receiving an error when attempting to
attach the device. My guest xml has the following scsi controller
