\\host\root
this is a slight variant of what's in the FAQ
(http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/FAQ/#25) because i don't
understand why the answer provided there seems to miss the
entire point.
why does the "root" share exist at all?
it certainly isn't part of my smb.conf !
Am i missing the obvious?
what other hidden shares are there?
(didn't find anything in the doc about this

data loss with ssh -n
Hi,
Using OpenSSH 2.9p2 (2.5.2 was also bad), I've noticed data loss on
Linux when:
1) ssh -n flag is used, and
2) ssh jobs are run from cron (effectively causing the same as above).
What is done, is a command basically like:
ssh [-n] -c blowfish -p 722 -i rsakey -l pwget passwdserver passwd > passwd.tmp 2> /tmp/log
ie, retrieve dynamically created passwd-file from passwdserver

Problems with security = domain/server and samba 2.0.6
Every 12. day or so domain members changes passwords in the NT domain, and
after a while (5 minutes normally) the NT PDC starts to sync against the
BDCs in the domain. Before this syncing is done the authentication of new
connections usually fails. We have a pretty large NT domain with 40.000+
users and the syncing process can take up to one hour, causing samba
authentication to fail during this

Samba 2.0.7pre3 snapshot released.
Hi all,
I just released Samba 2.0.7pre3, available from :
ftp://samba.org/pub/samba/alpha/samba-2.0.7pre3.tar.gz
This is the third snapshot of the code that should become
the official Samba 2.0.7 and is feature complete (ie. I'm
only going to accept bug fixes, not more features).
This is *not* production code, but should work well as a
file and print server, and contains fixes for

UNIX -> WinNT Username/Password Synchronization Revisited!
Hello all!
Brief Scenario:
We use a home grown "Accounts Registration Server" (ARS) to create, track,
modify and delete required accounts (via a secure TCP connection) on
various host computers (currently only OpenVMS and Digital UNIX servers).
We currently use a DUNIX box as the primary student POP3 mailserver (which
also runs SAMBA). Account registrations (approx 30,000) are

Samba 2.0.7 released
The Samba Team is pleased to announce Samba 2.0.7.
This is the latest stable release of Samba. This is the

for all current bug-fixes. This version has been tested
against Windows 2000 and has no *known* issues with that
release of Windows.
It may be fetched via ftp from :
