netbios lookup
Hello all,
My network is configured like this:
- a local network, with Windows Domain
- a DMZ network for our servers
We communicate between both by proxyarp.
Because we need to share folders with our servers in DMZ, these servers
are using samba. We have any problems to shared folders with them; ie
calling them by their IP address, EXCEPT that netbios name of our
servers in DMZ aren''t

I have one subnet (192.168.2/24), with several Fedora 11 machines and

stale name lookup result
I am running a Samba 3.0.10 server on freeBSD and 3.0.10-Debian client. I
just had a perplexing problem.
The client is a laptop and moves about different samba networks. My home
computer's name (Unix hostname and samba name) is 'ocean'. When I'm at
home I run smbmount //ocean/mydir /mnt/samba/ocean/mydir -o <options>
Normally this is fine. I've been running the

Netbios over VPN
I am attempting to utilize BackupPC on a Fedora 14 server to backup a remote client.
As I understand, it's primary mechanism for finding clients is performing a nmblookup <clientname>
This works fine for computers connected to the local network.
My issue is extending ?Samba's? search to encompass our other network - the point-to-point VPNs
Using OpenVPN, we have a number of road

IP-to-Username lookups
Hi,
I'm trying to figure out how to find users by IP. I'm parsing a
firewall log and would like to map internal IPs to users.
I noticed "nmblookup -A <ip>" returns interesting results:
COMPUTER <00> - M <ACTIVE>
DOMAIN <00> - <GROUP> M <ACTIVE>
COMPUTER <03> - M <ACTIVE>

smbstatus, SWAT, etc. not displaying NetBIOS name for XP SP2 machines
I'm trying to see what computer is accessing certain files through
samba, and the SWAT status page is a useful tool for that. Problem is
that for some computers, only the IP address shows, not the NetBIOS
name. This is only a problem with certain computers. Since we're using
DHCP on many computers I don't always know off the top of my head what
computer has any given IP

Impossible to obtain the NETBIOS name of a Win95 box using samba 2.0.5..0
Dear all,
I loose hope to be able to obtain the NETBIOS name of
a Win95 box using the following command :
nmblookup -A ipaddress
Some of my user are using laptops and are connecting
the network by a remote lan access.
The IP address is attributed by the RLA supplier.
I included in the login process (telnet) of our
Administrative AIX server a NETBIOS name check of the

Pinging a netbios name
Does know anybody a small, little, beatiful (and cheap) software
replacement of PING utility for pingins machines with netbios name and with
ip number and without DNS entry?
Smbclient and nmblookup work fine, but I thinking in a utilitity like PING
of windows95. This ping is capable to work in WINS (NETBIOS) and ip and
name translation.
The ping of linux dont work in this way. Samba work fine.

IP to NetBIOS resolution
Hello,
Is there *any* way to reliablily determine the NetBIOS name of a computer
when you only know their IP address? I know it is very easy to find the IP
address from the NetBIOS name, but I can't seem to find any way of getting a
NetBIOS name from an IP..

how can i find out a netbios name from an IP address.
i install quite a few (debian linux) internet gateway boxes with samba
installed so that the client can get their /var/www directory in network
neighbourhood.
in order to diagnose network faults (i.e "WTF can't the stupid doze boxes
see/login to/etc the samba share?"), i often need to find out the netbios
name of a machine. for some reason this seems to an extraordinarily

Looking up NetBIOS names
Is it possible to ask a machine for its NetBIOS name if it's running either
Windows or Samba?
I tried a few various nmblookup and smbclient command lines to no avail. I
would like to be able to query a machine (by IP) and have it respond with
its nb name.
I've noted that if I perform an smbclient -L -I on a machine, it will not
list its shares unless I get the NetBIOS name correct...
