Working Passwd Chat for Unix Password Sync on Redhat 6.1
I have been trying to get the password sync working for Redhat 6.1 (samba 2.05a
rpm). I got
the PDC working this morning, so I'm happy. The FAQ section on the samba site
was very
helpful. The password sync was the only sticking point.
The default passwd chat script didn't work well
passwd chat = *New*UNIX*password* %n\n *ReType*new*UNIX*password* %n\n *passw

starting smb services at bootup on x86 RH6.1
I am running RH6.1 on an x86 with 2.0.6 installed with an RPM. I am
confused as to getting smb to start at bootup. It works fine if I start it
manually (/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start). I swear, the 5.2 installation had
smb start at bootup, but I can't find the difference between the two. Is
the answer
1 - edit the /etc/inetd.conf file (swat needed a line uncommented)
2 - edit the

Netscape Profiles
There was a posting on Netscape Profiles mapped to network drives that I was
hoping someone could help me with. Other than setting the key for password
encryption, I've never messed with the NT registry keys.
I see this folder:
\Registry\Machine\SOFTWARE\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Users =
But making this part, I could use some help:

o''reilly''s arrogance
although basically hopeful of the company''s ''rough cuts'' venture, i am
insulted by the fact that o''reilly''s safari service offers important material
to its regular subscribers only if they pay extra for it. o''reilly''s material
on ajax is a good example: all of the introductory coverage is available only

login fails when username has apostrophe
Hi
I've added the apostrophe character to auth_username_chars however
authentication still fails. I'm using LDAP with the following details:
dovecot version 1.1.7
openldap client library 2.4.11
With auth_verbose = yes and auth_debug = yes set I see the following in
the logs. Note the initial escaped apostrophe and the subsequent escaped
escape in the filter!

Domain logons working
I finally got the Domain logons working. I've even got a logon script
happening. It's a pretty simple one:
net use n: \\server\share (I've tried to start out slow)
I have a x86 RH61 with 2.06.
I'm working up towards roaming profiles. I have a few questions?
Before I added the "logon drive = M:", it kept putting the home directory in Z:
Does adding the [homes]

Hello all,
I'm having trouble installing the package 'gregmisc'. I've run the
command:
> R CMD INSTALL -l /usr/lib/R/library /tmp/gregmisc_0.9.0.tar.gz
And I can see it shows up on the list of available packeage when I issue
> library()
But when I do
>library(gregmisc)
I get:

[OT] O''Reilly Cookbooks
Hi,
Has anyone gotten the "roughcuts" of the Ruby and Rails cookbooks? If you have the Pragmattic Rails Cookbook is the O''Reilly worth it? Also can you download PDF''s of their "roughcuts". The website is kind of vague, it just mentions online access (whatever that means).
Thanks in advance.

WINS not caching second Samba Server
Background:
I have 2 SMB Servers; one is configured to be the Preferred Master
(fserver), the other (upstairs) is configured to just share some files.
I want it to connect and update the WINS configuration on the Preferred
Master. Configuration files for both servers are attached.
Also worth mentioning that both the 'fserver' and 'upstairs' reside on
the same network.

Ruby at O''Reilly Rough Cuts
Not sure if this is old news or not, but it would appear that both the
Ruby Cookbook and a Rails book are now available for purchase at
O''Reilly Rough Cuts (something akin to PragProg''s beta book program):
http://rubyurl.com/nHz
http://my.safaribooksonline.com/?mode=roughcuts&srchtext=ROUGHCUTS
I haven''t tried them yet, but it definitely seems worth checking out.

RJS Templates for Rails
I''m happy to announce the availability of RJS Templates for Rails
published by O''Reilly.
The book covers all aspects and features of RJS that are included in
Rails 1.1. It also walks through a few examples, debugging with
FireBug, and finishes off with some reference material.
The book is 56 pages and is available in PDF format. I''m really happy
with how the book has

Cannot access Windows 10 printer - but can access all other parts of teh server (disks, folders etc)
Hi,
I am very new to mailing lists so please excuse any mistakes I make
regarding ettiquete etc.
On a home network (Windows/Apple/Lunux) everybody has co-operated
happily. I recently swapped my Linux system from Mint (Mate) to Debian
(KDE) Buster.
I can no longer access the Windows machine's printer form Debian.
I have tried many things and done a great deal of googling but cannot
seem to

DNAT Question
Hi list,
I have a shorewall installed on 2 interfaces which also has multiple
static public IP. Let''s say I have 1.2.3.4 and 1.2.3.5. I have assigned
nat with:
1.2.3.4 eth0 11.22.33.4 no no
But then I have a situation where I need 11.22.33.44 to connect to a
host in the net zone and appears also to be 1.2.3.5 not only 1.2.3.4.
How to do it? TIA

Rails on FreeBSD or OSX
Hello everyone-
I was just reading the article on Rails at O''Reilly and one of those
little light bulbs over my head went off - what a GREAT tool.
I tried to install both Ruby on my Mac PowerBook without much luck and
then tried to install Ruby and Rails on a FreeBSD server I have. I am
running into some odd errors - so, my question is - can you point me to
some tech resources

Simple example for High performance computing with R?
Dear list,
I want to run two independent calculation (A, B) and then combined
their results to do a plot in R. Before I just run calculation A
first, then calculation B. It will take some times. I just have one
server with multiple core. I noticed that there are some nice package
in R for parallel calculation, such as parallel, multicore and snow.
Also there is a book, O?Reilly ? ?Parallel R,

extended error
Hi all,
This is happening on a Samba 3.0.1 PDC-controlled domain, so I'm not
sure if the issue is Samba-related. If not, perhaps somebody can point
me in the right direction.
One of my users has a printer connected to his Win2k PC (name
UPSTAIRS-SMALL). Printing to it from another (WinXP) workstation fails
miserably. I tried to go back to first principles and go Start->Run

NT Domain and Samba as a PDC
Hi all,
I'm currently battling with my Corp. IS group over NT domain administration.
I admin a mostly Unix environment with a lot of WinXX clients. The
authentication server is owned by "Corporate" (you know, that nameless,
faceless entity that always makes do stupid things because
"That's the policy" :) and I have no control over it.
What I'd like to do is
