Samba and NIS+ (lengthy desperate plea)
Hi everyone,
Let me briefly describe my setup. I work at a small university and we are
setting up 3 labs. 2 are filled with Ultra Sparc 5's, and the 3rd will be
filled with PCs running NT4 workstation. We have an Enterprise Server
3500 running NIS+ to authenticate the Unix labs (or rather we will, once
I get it working), and I'd like to set up Samba to authenticate the NT
labs using

Linux/NIS+
Hello,
I'm having a problem configuring samba (2.0.5a) on a Linux
system using NIS+ as the password system. Samba complains that
it cannot find the smbpasswd file, which is not surprising as
I'm not using one. I tried 'smb password file = passwd.org_dir'
that sort of worked, except that it creates a directory called
passwd.org_dir from whatever directory I ran the smbd from.

NIS+ support
A small contribution :)
I downloaded and installed 2.0.4b and compiled with NIS+ support since the
fixed configuration for it was one of the new features. All worked fine,
except that I found I couldn't change passwords. It turned out to be not
a configuration error, but that some of the NIS+ routines hadn't been
implemented yet. So I did that :)
So far my mods seem to be working, but I

passwords and NIS+
Hello,
I'm new to samba. Trying to get it running on Solaris on Intel
using NIS+. I configured it with the --with-nisplus --with-nisplus-home
and --with-automount. I don't seem to be able to get authentication
to work.
I've created the smbpasswd file from my nis+ tables, set the perms
per the docs (encryption.txt to name one) and when I try to run
smbpasswd to set a password for

groups seems broken in samba-3.0.24-7.fc5
I've recently rebuilt a samba server and noticed this problem keeps coming
up with groups. If I use a user in smb.conf
valid users = me
It works and I'm able to access the shared drive. There are no messages in
the log file.
However if I use group
valid users = @admin
I can't access the drive and I get a lot of errors in my messages file. Here is
some of the errors.

Samba 3.0.23c panic
Hi,
I've just updated (using yum under fedora 5) to the latest version of
samba and am now encountering a major problem with samba. Whenever I
attempt to access shares (don't have printers or other such non disk
shares) the access fails (after prompting for password, and performing
some level of authentication, it notes if no password is entered that
Anonymous login successful).

samba breaks during user authentication after it was updated
Hello,
I am running samba on a machine running fedora 5. I did not know the system
was configured to automatically update the system via cron, and when it put
the new samba on last night, seems to have broken things. It is coredumping
now whenever a user tries to authenticate.
Our system is set up with user level security which i manage via smbpasswd
so there are no windows domains involved. The

Valid Users setting causing crash
Hey list,
Having a strange issue on a new File server. This system is running the
64-bit version of Fedora 5 running kernel 2.6.20-1.2300.fc5 and version
3.0.24-1.fc5 of Samba.
This system is functioning as a backup to a primary system that is
configured the same way. Same OS, hardware, etc. After moving data over
and setting up the users and groups, I moved over the smb.conf file as
well. In

with my samba migration by googleing and reading mailing list archives
and reading documentation etc.

Subject: Samba 3.0.23c + Win2K AD, can't mount shares (PANIC: internal error)
Hi,
I've got a big problem since my new samba servers are in 3.0.23c
version, no problems before.

Directory domain (4 replicated DC, 1 domain, no forest).
My problem:
Anytime I try to connect a share through any kind of client (MacOS
cifs client, smbclient, windows win2K pro, ...) the client can't

Samba 3.0.23c-1.fc5 problem - groups
Hi there,
I use FC5.
I discovered, for an exemple, if you have a user group with 3 members (Alan,
Baker, Clive), before 3.0.23c this line at smb.conf worked fine:
valid users = @user
But with 3.0.23c update it doesn't work anymore.
You have to replace the line like this:
valid users = Alan, Baker, Clive
I mean, replace the "@groupname" with the complete userlist of the

OPENssh (2.9p2) and keylogin in NIS+ on Solaris 7 with PAM
Hi,
I'm trying to make sshd perform a keylogin on a Solaris 7 NIS+ client
with PAM.
ssh connects and works fine but keyserv reports that it `can't encrypt
the session key'. So I think the keylogin failed or did not happen when
the user started an ssh session.
The following message is logged in syslog.

3.7.1p2: HP-UX 11.00 & NIS+ problems
Hi all,
When we installed OpenSSH 3.7.1p2, we could no longer ssh into the root
account. The following message would appear in the syslog.log:
Oct 8 19:20:38 myhost sshd[22179]: User root not allowed because account is
locked
We use NIS+ under HP-UX 11.00. We have very recently changed the root
password. To change the root password under NIS+ we do the following:

Samba, encrypted passwds and nis (not nis+)
I've been scouring the web and have picked up bits and pieces, but nothing
concrete on this issue.
I currently have a samba server that is set up to use NIS from another
server. What I'd like to do is either a) convert the ypcat password list
into a smbpasswd file or b) just use smbpasswd to create entries for a few
users. In other words, I want the smbpasswd file to provide passwords
