NT Domain and Samba as a PDC
Hi all, I'm currently battling with my Corp. IS group over NT domain administration. I admin a mostly Unix environment with a lot of WinXX clients. The authentication server is owned by "Corporate" (you know, that nameless, faceless entity that always makes do stupid things because "That's the policy" :) and I have no control over it. What I'd like to do is

Samba across subnets?
Hi all, I've recently set up a samba server, but just discovered that people on the "other" side can't reach it. The system shows up in Network Neighborhood, but you can't double click on it. It returns a message saying that the server is either inaccessible, or that I misspelled the name (How I did that with just one mouse click is beyond me ;) I had 'allow

AW: Samba across subnets?
If you don't want to type the ip adress of your samba server every time you connect, add a entry to your local hosts file and lmhosts file. You will find this files (and sample files with extension ".sam") in the windows main directory of Win95 and under "system32/drivers/etc" on WinNT 4.0. Where are the older versions?
Hi, Anyone know where I can get a .tar.gz of 2.0.2? I'd like this version, since the PDC code is reportedly more stable than 2.0.3. Or has this been fixed in 2.0.3? smbtar question?
Hi all, I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar? I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around

Changing Unix Login Passwords via samba according to the Passwords on the joined NT Domain?
Hi everyone, we are working in an big NT environment and now have a new Unix-area. What i want to do, is to change the unix login passwords according to changes in the NT system. The aim is, to simplify the password system, so that the users only have ONE password for everyting. Independend where they change it or on what system they are working on. I have successfully connected the samba

Samba servers disappeared?!
Hi all, I've been running a Samba server here for over 6 months now will great success. This past weekend I moved the Samba server to a new subnet, and now I can't see any of the various aliases from Samba server. I was previously able to see the aliases in NN across my 2 different subnets by using the 'wins server = ' parameter. The wins server I was registering with is on yet

nis homedir troubles
Sorry if this is an old problem. I have just installed 1.9.18p10 - the latest version. I noticed the nis homedir option in the config file, but have not had much luck in implementing it. I had hoped it would mean my [homes] shares would map to the correct server - the one which physically carries a users home directory - regardless of the machine to which the connection attempt was made. My

Network Neighborhood comment fields and Samba
Hi all, I'm using Samba 1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.5.1. Within my smb.conf file I am using the 'netbios aliases' option to make my server appear as 4 different servers with an smb.conf.%L to load the specifics of each: netbios aliases = hardware software diagnostics homedirs include = /usr/local/samba/var/smb.conf.%L The problem I'm encountering is that the only comment I see

No INSTALL file?
Hi all, Is there no INSTALL file that ships with samba? I thought there was one there at one time. Is the install procedure as simple as: ./configure [possible various options] make make install Or is there more to it than that? Restoring from an smbclient/gtar archive?
Hi all, I recently used smbtar (Samba Version 2.0.4) to create a tar file "backup" of an NT filesystem. However, when using GNU tar to extract the tar file, I get a little ways into the 'tar xvpf ../file.tar' command and get a whole bunch of errors: tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on ../file.tar: Invalid argument tar: Read error on

Problems authentication with NT PDCs in security = server (was security = user)
The interesting part is that PAM nor the SMB auth plugin for Apache requires you to be a member of the domain. However, the caveat with pam_smb_auth is that you have to have a unix account for every windows user you want to authenticate. I guess the behavior I'm trying to achieve is the one achieved with the Apache plugin: 1) Doesn't require you to be a member of the domain 2)

Problems authentication with NT PDCs in security = se rver (was sercurity = user)
James: I use Winnind to authenticate users from the Windows PDC - I have no UNIX users. Have you looked at this? I've got an informal HOWTO if you'd like it. Thanks, Kevin L. Problems authentication with NT PDCs in security = se rver (was security = user)
James: (Again someone correct me if I'm wrong) PAM allows local access to the Samba machine as well as authenticating Samba users. Winbind *only* allows for Samba access. This is why I chose *not* to use PAM in my setup. I don't want normal users to have local logon access to *MY* servers. <evil grin> With Winbind, you don't need PAM at all. If you're planning on

Nis homedirs
Greetings, I'm using 2.0.0-alpha13 on Solaris (compiling with gcc 2.8.1 on Solaris 2.5, running on 2.5, 2.5.1, and 2.6). I see this in the smb.conf.5 man page: nis homedir (G) Get the home share server from a NIS (or YP) map. For unix systems that use an automounter, the user's home directory will often be mounted on a workstation on demand from a remote

"NT-PDC" and "Some Linux-Clients using NIS"...
Hi everybody! I'm planning on realising the following situation: We have a NT-PDC and some Windows-Clients. As Linux becomes more popular and more important in our net, we'd like to use the PDC's user-database for "logon-authentications" on the linux-computers too. Planned are some linux workstations and at least one server. My idea so far is to have the linux clients

LDAP docs?
Hi all, Can someone please point me to where I would find info on the experimental LDAP support for Samba? I've looked through everything I could find on the web and in the 2 more recent books, but could only find passing mention that it's being worked on. Is it still so experimental that no one's documented anything about it yet? Thanks, -- Seeya, Paul ---- Doing

Dual Authentication methods?
Hi all, I have an interesting situation where I have 2 groups of users, a Unix group, and a Windows group. I want to be able to allow them all access to the same resources, but not comlicate my life too much more than it already is :) Here's the situation. I have a Samba server currently running in order to allow the Unix folks access to their home directories from their PCs. This group
