99.9% uptime
Sorry, forgot to change the subject on my first posting.
I was reading a comment this morning about something Microsoft had published
to the effect that there were vendors guaranteeing 99.9% uptime for NT. The
guy who wrote the reply did the math for what that means, and the results
are very interesting.
Quote below:
OK, now what does a 99.9% uptime guarantee mean? Well, it means that

smbfs mounted files created owned by root?
Hi all. We have been denying NFS access to our Linux et al users since
they can of course set their uid to whatever they want. So we tell them
to use smbfs. But when I just tried experimenting by mounting my own
network share on my Linux box via smbfs, and created a few files, I loo
on the serevr and the files are all owned by root?! This has got to be a
configuration issue right?

Samba High Availability
We're using Samba, and it's working very well, however I'm interested in
finding out what approaches would work for having some sort of
redundancies in place in case the main server crashes. Is there anything
in place for Samba in order to have some sort of backup in place in case
the main server crashes.
The reason is that the server is critical to the company's business, and

Rapid transfers cause kernel panic
Our site has been experiencing problems with Samba causing kernel panics
under heavy use. We are running Mandrake 7.0 and Samba 2.0.6. We are no
longer using the distro included with Mandrake - we actually downloaded
the 2.0.6 release and recompiled. Downloading from Samba shares causes no
problems - and downloads are frequent and heavy - but uploading similar
amounts of data leaves a catatonic

Speex AEC for Coldfire
Hi Guys,
I'm attempting to use the libspeexdsp component with a Coldfire M5329. I've downloaded the speex-1.2beta3 and configured using the following:
./configure --host=m68k-uclinux --prefix=/home/uclinux/uClinux-dist --enable-fixed-point LDFLAGS='-Wl,-elf2flt'
The library builds fine (or appears to) an is placed in the subdir 'lib' of the prefix shown above; my routine

Re:Importing SPSS Data Entry data files
On 16 Apr, Unung Istopo Hartanto asked about using R library 'foreign' to import SPSS Data Entry data files. SPSS Data Entry is an application that allows for the creation of formatted data entry forms (as does EpiInfo, Epidata and CSPro (all free downloads)). As such it creates the usual SPSS data files, but adds forms information, which the 'foreign' package does not know how

the matrix of rows with specific row sums
I am just starting with R and have the following problem: given a matrix
of ones and zeroes, say
mdim=4
m<-matrix(round(runif(mdim^mdim)),mdim,mdim)
how to construct the matrix of those rows of m, whose elements sum to 2.
Contrary to the random matrix above, the actual matrix always has at
least one such row.

Oplocks with concurrent access from same client
I am observing the following behaviour with samba-2.2.12 (Yes, I know,
it's old) and MS-Access XP on a Win2K box:
The client opens a .mdb file and gets a level2 oplock.
Then it opens the .mdb file again and loses the oplock (at least I
assume it does: The server sends an SMBlockingX request to the client
and waits for another SMBlockingX request from the client before sending

How to best divide table by table
Hi all,
how can I divide two tables of the same dimension so that all names are
preserved, ie do not become NA? I have "tab1" and "tab2", each having
names in the first column. I want "tab3" with the same names and values
"tab1/tab2".
Thanks,

I have tried in v. 2.3.0 and 2.3.1
The sav-file loads without problems in spss v14 I have tried saving in
older spss v7 but are getting the same result.
The read.spss() has other

Ogg Vorbis on DSP platform?
Hello,
I'd like to develop a codec for the Ogg Vorbis algorithm on a DSP
(controller?) hardware platform.
We've got 2 (3) main applications:
1) the codec should be used for 2 channel simultaneous message
recording/playback on flash EPROM.
2) the codec should be used for streaming audio over IP or Ethernet/intranet
networks.
3) for large system, the PC should serve as a storing device

I didn't get bridgeing to work with Linux kernel 2.6.10 (coldfire 5485)

with "brctl", everything seems to be ok, but i if i try to ping through
my bridge, i see ARP-Request arriving on the other side, but the
ARP-Responses do not go back through the bridge.
