smbtar question?
Hi all,
I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network
Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest
way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then
use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use
gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar?
I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around

Where are the older versions?
Hi,
Anyone know where I can get a .tar.gz of 2.0.2? I'd like this version,
since the PDC code is reportedly more stable than 2.0.3. Or has this
been fixed in 2.0.3?
Thanks,

Samba across subnets?
Hi all,
I've recently set up a samba server, but just discovered that people
on the "other" side can't reach it. The system shows up in Network
Neighborhood, but you can't double click on it. It returns a message saying
that the server is either inaccessible, or that I misspelled the name
(How I did that with just one mouse click is beyond me ;)
I had 'allow

Samba servers disappeared?!
Hi all,
I've been running a Samba server here for over 6 months now will great success.
This past weekend I moved the Samba server to a new subnet, and now I can't
see any of the various aliases from Samba server.
I was previously able to see the aliases in NN across my 2 different subnets
by using the 'wins server = ' parameter. The wins server I was registering
with is on yet

AW: Samba across subnets?
If you don't want to type the ip adress of your samba server every time you
connect, add a entry to your local hosts file and lmhosts file.
You will find this files (and sample files with extension ".sam") in the
windows main directory of Win95 and under "system32/drivers/etc" on WinNT
4.0.

Network Neighborhood comment fields and Samba
Hi all,
I'm using Samba 1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.5.1. Within my smb.conf file
I am using the 'netbios aliases' option to make my server appear as 4
different servers with an smb.conf.%L to load the specifics of each:
netbios aliases = hardware software diagnostics homedirs
include = /usr/local/samba/var/smb.conf.%L
The problem I'm encountering is that the only comment I see

NT Domain and Samba as a PDC
Hi all,
I'm currently battling with my Corp. IS group over NT domain administration.
I admin a mostly Unix environment with a lot of WinXX clients. The
authentication server is owned by "Corporate" (you know, that nameless,
faceless entity that always makes do stupid things because
"That's the policy" :) and I have no control over it.
What I'd like to do is

No INSTALL file?
Hi all,
Is there no INSTALL file that ships with samba? I thought there was one there
at one time.
Is the install procedure as simple as:
./configure [possible various options]
make
make install
Or is there more to it than that?
Thanks,

problems with w2k and samba PDC
I simply cannot join my domain controlled by a samba PDC (vers. 2.0 or the
newest version 2.0.7) with w2k professional. If I try to join the domain a
messagebox appears and claims that the particular domain doesn't exist
(allthough I know it does!).
If one examines the logfiles, it seems as if they don't understand
themselves at all.

Drive namings...
Just wondering if there is a way to get drive namings to change according
to who's logged into the network.
ie.
'bob' logs into windows networking and gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
Now if 'sue' logs into windows networking on the same pc she gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
But E: contains sue's stuff. So is there a way into making 'sue'

Corrupted Excel files, oplock_break(905) errors
Hi there everyone!
I'm using Samba 2.0.5a-19990721 on a RedHat 6.0 machine with Linux kernel
2.2.12. My system generally works fine, however recently I've had some
complaints about some files being corrupted. The latest and best-handled
to enable a debugging happened at around the same time. Both clients were
using Windows95 OSR2 machines with Excel 97 SP-2. Two users reported the

Independend where they change it or on what system they are working on.

Restoring from an smbclient/gtar archive?
Hi all,
I recently used smbtar (Samba Version 2.0.4) to create a tar file "backup"
of an NT filesystem. However, when using GNU tar to extract the tar file,
I get a little ways into the 'tar xvpf ../file.tar' command and get a whole
bunch of errors:

No luck with "UNIX password sync"
I was very excited when I ran across the "UNIX password sync" directive
in the smb.conf!!! THAT would be convenient and really add to the making
the server seamless!! Unfortunately I haven't been able to get the unix
and smbpasswords to sync from changing within win95. The posts I've seen
in the mailing list concerning sync have so far gone unanswered :-(

samba and net start
Hi,
I was wondering if samba provides a means to start a programme on an NT
server, specifically a service? This is equivalent to the 'net start'
command, but I wish to start a service from my Linux server.
Thanks

Want to contribute to SAMBA Doc : NT,PDC, Problems, etc...
Hi all,
Like certainly many members of those lists (SAMBA's list), I would like to
contribute to SAMBA project. The main reason is because when you write
something you must absolutely be familiar with the subject. It will give me
oportunity to be (more) familiar with some kinds of SAMBA Spec.
Since I read samba mailling list, many questions are post about SAMBA PDC,
BDC, etc, interaction
