Samab and init.d
Is it better to start Samba using in initd, or to use the script, much like
the one provided by SuSE. ?? so far I have used the script, but I don't
like the fact of having to start samba manually. I would much prefer to
see it run as a service. just to confirm all it really involves is starting

Samba PDC: 98 client unable to locate user list.
I just set up my samba box as a pdc on small (4) network that I have at
home. whenever I specify user shares
on my 98 client it is unable to get the user list from the Samba. I am
able to log on without problem as multiple
users. I also notice that when I logon on my 98 client it copies config
files every time I logon. I imagine that I
may not have the necessary shares setup. I am running

Samba2.0.6 tgz compile questions.
After fighting with trying to rebuiled my src.rpm file. I decided to use a
plain old
fashion compile from the tar files. which worked ok, no settings changed.
at about 11pm last night I finished and noticed a few things that made me a
bit
uneasy.
1) all the Samba bin files were installed in /usr/local/samba/..
2) no smb.conf file was created.
I used ./configure, make , make install when I

Samba and /etc/shadow.
Dear mailing-list!
I have Samba 2.0.6 on a Redhat 6.1 linux box.
How can I make samba use the /etc/shadow file
for authenticating users?
Reading the archives I assumed there should be
a compile-time option I should set, but I found
no such option.

URGENT: REDHAT 6.1 STORES SAMBA PRIVATE FILES IN /etc
dear redhat,
i examined a friend's system today, to help him configure it. assuming
that he just "installed" from scratch the samba package, it appears that
you have provided a default smb.conf file for redhat 6.1 that puts samba
private configuration files in /etc. the suggested options, for example
show "smbpasswd file = /etc/smbpasswd".
this is REALLY bad.

Authenticating PPTP users against Samba/LDAP
Hi,
I have a few remote user who use a PPTP based VPN. The server is running
PoPToP (http://www.poptop.org/), and a pppd patched to support MPPE/MPPC
for (some) added security. Currently, users authentication information
is stored in plaintext in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets. I'd like to be able to
put users into LDAP, and have ppp authenticate either directly against
LDAP, or against Samba (with an

Samba 3 / Solaris 8 / Kerberos
Hi,
I have a problem to compile Samba 3 with ADS support on Solaris.
Unfortunatly, Solaris 8 doesn't come with integrated kerberos support,
so that configure doesn't find any support for kerberos. For Solaris 8
there is a package called SEAM 1.0.1 with provides kerberos
functionality for Solaris, but the needed header file, i.e krb5.h, are
not included and according to my

not sure where the problem lies, I'm posting it here too in the hope
that someone has a clue.....
I have recently installed a printer accounting system on my systems, and
changed the print model for some of my users. In most cases, this has
been fine, but users who are using HP Laserjet 4 printers are

Speex
Dear Speex developer(s),
We are currently in the process of evaluating speech codecs for the
transmission of wideband speech (fs=16kHz) at bitrates lower than 32
kb/s. Speex is a contender for this task.
Practically we would have to port Speex to a specific 16 bit DSP if we
would go for this. We should be able to handle this.
But we would like to ask for your opinion regarding patent

OT: hardware newbie p9115-505
Hi guys,
Sorry for the OT. I've posted it in some IBM related forums but no reply yet.
We've got an IBM pSeries p9115-505 machine from warehouse.
I notice that it doesn't have any port for the monitor.
Where do we plug the monitor?
>From Google it says something about HMC (Hardware Management Center).
Any hints is really2 appreciated.
Thank you.

Nmblookup trouble
Hi,
Some time ago, I wrote a small script based on some information on one
of the Samba lists, which let me figure out which machine a user was
logged in on. The script was this:-
# smbfind: watch for someone to log in
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin
case $# in
0) echo 'Usage: smbfind <nt_login>' 1>&2; exit 1
esac
nmblookup -S "${1}#03" | awk '/<00> - /{print
