browsing network neighborhood
Hello, I'm looking for help with the following setup.
I have my own network of about 5 windows 95/98 computers and 1 linux box.
with IP addresses 192.168.10.*
The one running linux is actually set up as a router, with 2 ethernet cards
The other network that it is connected to is the residence ethernet at my
school, which is connected to the internet.

Suggestions/Pointers on where to begin my search for a solution?
Hi-
I''m working in the IT department of a small liberal arts university-- we''re
getting *massacred* by P2P traffic.
Informal testing/probing indicates that about 60% of our traffic from the
dorms was P2P-- we''ve taken the initial step of hardlimiting the dorms to no
more than 40% of outgoing university bandwidth. Also, we''ve blocked the

MD5 passwords in Red Hat Linux 6.1
Hello,
Recently I realized that entering first 8 characters from my root
password is enough to log in as root although I've enabled MD5
passwords in installation program. Also I've added two other users
during installation. After looking through /etc/shadow it seems that
root's password isn't md5 although passwords of other two users are
md5.
Is it correct behaviour?

browsing, subnets, across, workgroups
Why does browsing across subnets only work if all of the machines are in
the same workgroup?
We're really a unix and mac campus, but we're trying to support windows
machines by using a samba server to let them print and let the students
access a little chunk of disk space.
I've got a samba server set up as the workgroup SERVERS, and I've told it
to be a domain master, a

Nbfw, Cross-subnet browsing
Hi,
I'm currently using the nbfw (netbios forwarder - http://nbfw.sourceforge.net/)
patch with samba on a linux masquerading firewall/router. It works
pretty well.
I was wondering if there was plan to include this patch in samba (or TNG)
I was also wondering if there was any way to use this as a mean to do
cross-subnet browsing efficient.
The paradox is that browsing works better between a

How to stop winbindd from granitng UID=0? Security hole?
I have domain controller on Windows 2003.
On the client side standard installation of samba 3.0.1? ldap,
kerberos and winbindd.
Setup should allow all users from domain login to all client's
services (console, ssh and so on) using domain name and password. Ok,
we have acquired this point.
It aslo should be possible to login simply by writing "Login:

linux 3.3-pre-rc1: Starting domU fails with Error: Failed to query current memory allocation of dom0.
Hi Konrad,
Today i tried linuses tree of today (last commit is 4c4d285ad5665bfbd983b95fde8d7a477d24a361).
It boots dom0 fine, but it fails to start any domU with: "Error: Failed to query current memory allocation of dom0."
With my previous 3.1.5 kernel everything is fine, nothing else changed in config in between.

ipmasq to shoerwall
Hello,
Since the ipmasq package has been dropped from debian I decided to
migrate to shorewall. My setup is pretty simple:
[DSL Modem] -eth0- [shorwall/gateway] -eth1- [local network]
ipmasq required that I set the MTU on eth0 to 1492. Migrating to
shorewall went well, but a small number of web sites would load slow or
not at all. Setting the MTU on eth0 to 1492 and setting CLAMPMSS=Yes

RV: LATENCY PROBLEMS
Hello there,
I''m having lots of problems with my setup here. Let me explain:
I am network administrator for my university dorm. We are about 300 users,
and we have 2 ADSL connections doing load balancing with 300kbits upstream
and 2Mbit downstream.
The load balancing is working great, we are doing connection tracking so I
can mark and hence prioritize interactive traffic and ACKS

Correlation based on the attributes of vertices
Dear all,
I have a directed graph - an Igraph to be more precise - which has some
vertices attributes (like dorm, year etc). Edges and the graph itself do not
have any attributes. Based on the attributes of the vertices, I'd like to
calculate correlation among the edges (e.g. how likely people of the same
dorm are connected?) for the whole graph. Also, I'd like to calculate

Q: best solution to stop traffic to huge amount of unregistered hosts
Hi
perhaps someone else already had the same problem.
Problem description:
I''m running a class B University network with approx 10k hosts
attached. I would now like to stop traffic from and to hosts
in my network not already registered in my DNS server.
This means I''ve to handle with approx 50k rules|routes. Sure

[LLVMdev] [RFC] Add empty() method to iterator_range.
Hi Chandler,
Agreed - ranges aren't containers, just views of sequences. Still, that's
all many algorithms want, and it's just as valid to ask whether a sequence
is empty as it is to ask that of a container.
No contest on points 2 or 3, but I'm confused about point 4. When are
ranges not pairs of iterators? I mean in a way that would clash with the
proposal for empty() to be

My Samba Server had a wild time this weekend thanks to alleged power
fluctuations. I'm using Samba 3.x on Fedora 4. My server sits on an APC UPS
that remains in good health. When I arrived this Monday I found that my
MicroTik Router was still up. My Win XP pro AV server was off and my
Fedora/SAMBA box was also off. (all boxes have their own 15min UPS)
The Win XP pro was brought up w/out

Bandwidth limiting a MASQed network.
Hi!
I just recently entered the wonderful world of the so called "advanced
routing" and decided to try and limit the bandwidth of a MASQed network
here and ended up in trouble :(.
The setup is (as far as I can tell) pretty straightforward. eth0 is
connected to the "real" network with a proper IP, and eth2 is 192.168.10.x
(the MASQed network). All of it is basicly right out of

Is ESFQ working?
Hi there, i am trying to shape a network for a college dorms...
INTERNET---- ETH0--------Nat Box-------ETH1--------LAN
I have set up classes of traffic (HTTP, FTP, MAIL, IM, OTHER) and i have
assigned a rate for everyone with a HTB qdisc. The limit based in traffic is
working flawlessly.
However, under every HTB class i have set up a ESFQ queue discipline with hash

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times,
but without quite satisfactory results.
I have a private subnet behind an NAT
proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet
on the other side with the NT PDC on the public.
(Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC
will change later, but currently I'm trying to
find out how this all works before I do that.
I'm trying to make a client machine on

limit bandwidth per host question
EHLO tc gurus.
New to traffic control. Unfortunately, the politicians here in Denmark
have decided that a PC is the same as a television set - so anyone
owning a PC and internet connection of over 255 kbit/s must pay DKR
2200/year = EUR 300 = USD 400 in television licence fees :-( This is a
lot of money for poor students, so we want to offer the students the
*option* of limiting their

Problems with ICQ etc. on nano-setup
I administer a nano-setup on a dorm-network with a couple of hundred
active users.
The setup uses 2 x 2 2Mb/s DSLs, meaning two DSLs from each of two
different ISPs.
It works fine except for some minor glitches:
https-sites often kicks users. This was solved by tying outbound https
to a single DSL. Not the best solution but it works so far that users
dont kicked from the sites anymore. Now

Samba server side printer driver, how?
I think my previous message didnt reach the list. Therefor a resend.
Hi.
Im an admin on a small network with about 100 clients running windows 95,

and sharing one HP Laserjet 5M/MP. Our current setup works fine, but I am
wondering
How do I put windows clients drivers on my samba server to eliminate the
need for users to choose
