browsing multiple workgroups on multiple subnets
Is it possible to browse multiple workgroups on two or more subnets? I have set up samba on either end of a VPN and can browse successfully from either end, but only in the workgroup that samba is configured for. Can Samba be a member of more than one workgroup at the same time? Looking in browse.dat I can see all the machines in samba's workgroup and also the other workgroups, but not the

Multiple workgroups : Multiple Subnets
I am still trying to make samba work over a WAN with multiple workgroups although I am just about to throw in the towel. I had hoped to find a solution that would permit a Windows PC to browse a (MS) workgroup (ie retrieve the browse list from the workgroup master browser for a remote (MS) workgroup when that MB is NOT a samba server). Since WINS only provides the broadcast address of the remote

Browsing workgroups on remote subnets
Is this stretching the limits of what Samba was designed to do? I have set up a VPN with 2 LANs (I'll call them EastLAN and WestLAN) interconnected through the internet. On EastLAN there is a samba server configured to be the domain master browser as well as the WINS server. PCs connected to this LAN are Win9X and are all in the workgroup EAST. On the WestLAN there is a samba server

Problem selecting installation drive : 5.2
When doing the 5.2 installation the ONLY drive option provided is mapper/nvidia_cbjcdhfe (250G) My system has 2 SATA - 250G drives and I want to use them in a RAID/LVM configuration. My question: How do I get the installer to let me use DiskDruid to create RAID1 arrays and then use LVM for the mount points? What I've done so far: I've verified that both drives are recognized by

The share needs to be mounted by the linux machine's computer account. Here is what I do: # su - DOMAIN\\computer$ [DOMAIN\computercomputer ~]$ <<< i think there is a problem with the bash prompt, skip it for now

rsync over ssh - possible attack vectors
Hello everybody! First my setup: I connect from Debian Lenny to Ubuntu Karmic with a command like: user1 at localserver:$ rsync -rtcve ssh user1 at remoteserver:/.../ /local/.../ (using default versions of ssh and rsync in the vendor repos, ssh with password authentication) As far as I understand if localserver got compromised an attacker could read the password and then get full access to

Samba and WINS
Current situation: a) lots of Windows NT 4.0 workstation clients b) quite a few Samba 1.9.18p10 servers running on Suns c) 1 Samba server running as WINS server d) NO Windows Servers e) 1:1 correspondance between Netbios names and DNS names f) DHCP currently tells the Windows machines the WINS server. Problem: If WINS server goes down, every Windows NT workstation can not mount anything

Final Solution [was] Samba is a Hoax
Many thanks to all the Samba fans for your ideas and suggestions. Eventually all the indicators pointed at a W95 client that was (somehow) selectively working with everything except Samba. I took out my W95 repair tools (fdisk & format) and after a new install (and setting the registry to use plaintext passwords) everything worked fine. When I also re-installed all the other M$ patches,

Centos for entry level server : Motherboard?
I've been burned by Sata not working on an Asus motherboard (nVidia / nForce) and need to select something that will work for a fairly light duty web/mail/sql server. How do I go about finding out if a specific motherboard will work with sata software raid and Centos 4.4 (or 5.x when it's settled down). DFS not working w/ fully.qualified.sub.domain
Hi: I've got a samba/DFS server configured that works fine under it's original name, but I'm getting booted out of that DNS domain, into a subdomain. All my (WinXP) clients have drives mapped to names like \\server.domain.com\dfsroot. If I browse to the path, \\server.domain.com\dfsroot, everything works. I can access the shares pointed to via the dfs links But, now the network is

samba 2.2.1a and WAN-Shares
Hi out there, I`ve not a real problem (currently), but a few questions on wan-wide (read: low bandwidth) share distribution with samba 2.2.1a. The setup described below was developed in a hurry (was needed by tomorrow :-\). Are there better ways to do this? What are the pros and cons of using the msdfs - options in this situation? Has anyone set up a similar share topology? If so, would you

mfcr2 stuck
Hello I'm using mfcr2 support (unicall) in asterisk 1.4. Everything is working fine, asterisk can answer calls. But after some random period of time mfcr2 module stuck. When I make a call to my * box I can hear only signal of getting caller ID ("tritirirti" - like jumping on :) ) and connection is terminated by my telecom operator. When everything I ok after few seconds of this

Beware: Samba is a hoax
I can only conclude that Samba is an elaborate hoax and here's why. 1) Setup is more complex than Sendmail (it set the standard for complexity) 2) Even the simplest smb.conf causes trouble 3) You can pass ALL the tests in the DIAGNOSIS procedure, AND Samba will still not let you SHARE FILES or SHARE PRINTERS between Windows and Unix but you WILL be able to BROWSE YOUR SHARES (Just pretend

Cross-subnet browsing with multiple domains/workgroups
Hi, I'm trying to set up browsing across subnets to provide an 'enterprise'-wide (sorry for the MS term ;-) browse list / Network Neighbourhood. I've read BROWSING.TXT, but I can't see how machines on different subnets in different domains/workgroups sync up (using Samba, anyway). On my local subnet, I've set up a clunky old Linux 386 (Samba 1.9.18p8) as the browse

How to find all workgroups being used on a subnet?
I want to discover all the groups currently in use on a subnet. Is there a way to do this with a broadcast request? I know that I could just run nmblookup on every single host on the subnet, but that would take forever. I'd like to just make one or maybe a few calls. I'd like to limit the number of calls I make to no more than one plus the number of workgroups that are in use. Any
