Samba device that integrates Pc and Apple Networks
I remember a while back seeing someone mention a device that would integrate
an apple with a pcnetwork.
basically it was a small box that had a samba server built in. you would
connect your mac to it with the
other side connecting to the hub of a pcnetwork. It would intern allow
Apple shares to be viewed in network
neighborhood, and macs to mount pc shares./ does this ring a bell with
anyone.

Samab and init.d
Is it better to start Samba using in initd, or to use the script, much like
the one provided by SuSE. ?? so far I have used the script, but I don't
like the fact of having to start samba manually. I would much prefer to
see it run as a service. just to confirm all it really involves is starting

Samba PDC: 98 client unable to locate user list.
I just set up my samba box as a pdc on small (4) network that I have at
home. whenever I specify user shares
on my 98 client it is unable to get the user list from the Samba. I am
able to log on without problem as multiple
users. I also notice that when I logon on my 98 client it copies config
files every time I logon. I imagine that I
may not have the necessary shares setup. I am running

Samba2.0.6 tgz compile questions.
After fighting with trying to rebuiled my src.rpm file. I decided to use a
plain old
fashion compile from the tar files. which worked ok, no settings changed.
at about 11pm last night I finished and noticed a few things that made me a
bit
uneasy.
1) all the Samba bin files were installed in /usr/local/samba/..
2) no smb.conf file was created.
I used ./configure, make , make install when I

Samba and /etc/shadow.
Dear mailing-list!
I have Samba 2.0.6 on a Redhat 6.1 linux box.
How can I make samba use the /etc/shadow file
for authenticating users?
Reading the archives I assumed there should be
a compile-time option I should set, but I found
no such option.

URGENT: REDHAT 6.1 STORES SAMBA PRIVATE FILES IN /etc
dear redhat,
i examined a friend's system today, to help him configure it. assuming
that he just "installed" from scratch the samba package, it appears that
you have provided a default smb.conf file for redhat 6.1 that puts samba
private configuration files in /etc. the suggested options, for example
show "smbpasswd file = /etc/smbpasswd".
this is REALLY bad.

computer not showing up in Network Neighborhood
Hi,
Has anyone had this problem with Samba? I have been having trouble
getting my Samba server to show up in my Network Neighborhood list. It
is in the right workgroup, and when I do a search for computer, it is
found. Yet, it never shows up in my NN list. Can someone give me some
advice on how to make this work?
Thanks,
Ken

hiding the UNIX system name from Network Neighborhood
Hi,
Here's the deal; Currently within our NT domain, Network Neighborhood can
see our SAMBA server via both the "netbios" name (set with 'netbios name =
vegas' from within the smb.conf file), plus the actual UNIX system
name. We want our users to browse our SAMBA server only via the "netbios"
name and not the actual UNIX system name. How can I configure

SAMBA/Network Neighborhood problem
Hello SAMBA gurus, I have SAMBA installed on a Linux box behind a Linux firewall. Also running behind the same firewall on the same class C sub-net is a NT 4.0 box. After starting up SMBD/NMBD I could see the remote SAMBA system and the file and printer shares displayed as icons in the NT 4.0 Network Neighborhood Explorer file system. Right clicking and displaying the menu over the highlighted

Empty Network Neighborhood"
Hello.
My problem is not samba realted, but I might hope that it can help me to solve
it.
Our network is about 200 users. Some of them are using windows. But today
Network Neighborhood on all computers became empty. I've tried smbtree and
its listing is empty too. If I enable -d10 I can see in the last string:
"Unable to find master browser by broadcast"
The only idea I have,

Hide the samba server on the Network Neighborhood
Hello all,
Just a small question that I was unable to find an answer on the
samba sites. Is it possible to hide the samba server on the
Network Neighborhood? Something like setting the
"Hidden"=dword:00000001 on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters]
I'm not a member of the list, so if the replies could be sent
directly to me it would be

Can't browse network neighborhood after changing network address on server
Hi I'm resending this message in the hope that i can at least find out
out if nobody has run across this problem. It is quite a serious problem
since we deploy many samba servers frequently. If no one on this list
knows the answer(or the answer is obvious) please point me to the
appropriate list.
I seem to have a recurring problem with browsing the network.

Is it possible to map shares via Network Neighborhood?
We're running Samba 2.2.2 over an NT network. Our clients use Win95 (for
the time being) and I wondered how we config Samba so they can map the
shares using network neighborhood. We can map fine through MS-DOS, but
when I try, for example, to map E drive to \\nfssrv\ads share via network
neighborhood (where we ARE able to see the shares), it says
E: is already connected to .

Leftovers in Network Neighborhood
Hi there,
In our Network Neighborhood I can see items for old workgroups and domains
that no longer exist.
For example, in /var/log/messages I see:
