Windoze workstation hangs accessing certain files on the Samba Share.
I'm configuring Samba 2.0.3 for win95/98 clients (~20 workstations) and everything was going great for the first 10 or 12. Now when I access certain subdirectories of my share from the Win machine, everything nearly hangs. I say nearly because the mouse will still move sort of. It creeps along at about a pixel a second. It continues to get worse until I just have to cold boot the workstation.

smbmount from fstab
I've seen several references to running smbmount from /etc/fstab, but I've never seen an example. Does anyone have an example fstab entry that does this? Thanks Steve Litt

Security related bug/issue ... or mis-configuration? (fwd)
As a followup to my own email... We did some testing here today with connecting to the share from an NT box, where we connect to \\relay\marc as marc when log'd in as a seperate user...NT refuses to allow it. Is there a bug with the server that, using smbclient from Linux, allows you to connect to any share without a password? Can someone test this and see if its a local problem or not?

800+ simultaneous connections ...
Does anyone have any experience with a high number of *simultaneous* connections? We're investigating the possibility of moving one of our servers from novell to solaris, and the only "concern" we have at this time is what happens if 800 clients all decide to connect at the same time? the server will be running solaris/7 on a dual-ppro system ... Letting users modify there own 'valid users = ' directive
Here's an odd question/request ... Right now, if you setup smb.conf with a [homes] section, anyone can connect and login to the server, as themselves, and mount their home directory. No probs there. Has anyone thought of, and possibly implemented, a means where that end user could change things for themselves to extend permissions on their directory? Basically, make a Win based utility

Linux vs NT: a new test
Don't know how many ppl saw/read the following: http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0,4153,1015266,00.html One of the comments on Slashdot was the question as to how well 4.4lite would have done in the same tests, as they "theorize" that alot of the problems revolve around Linux's IP stack... Now if only we had a working MMAP, we'd be all set... Marc G. Fournier

union_lookup panic ...
G'day ... Altho it is rare, we are getting union_lookup panics on our server(s) ... as most on this list already know, we make heavy use of unionfs to share between jails, and I already know that this is the "kernel side" cause of the problem ... but ... From what I can tell, though, the "trigger" for the panic is pkg_delete ... if I build a jail'd environment,

ALT_BREAK_TO... + ILO ... missing something in config ...
Due to an issue I'm having with 7.x, and trying to track it down, I spent tonight getting my server setup to allow my to break into the debugger when it hangs, and hopefully dump core ... But, although I *think* I've got it all, I'm obviously missing something, as it isn't breaking ... First ... I'm running a proliant server, and when I connect via SSH to ILO on that

Security related bug/issue ... or mis-configuration?
Morning... Attached are two files. The first (smb.session) shows one user connecting to two different shares on a remote server using *no* password... The second is the smb.conf file found on that remote server, running Solaris 2.6, and Samba 2.0.3 ... I'm *really* hoping that its something that we're overlooking as far as configuration is concerned...or else there is one helluva

Unix .TXT vs DOS .TXT files
Is there any option that will covert a text file from one system to the other? I have a few files on linux with extension TXT. There are plain text files. On NT, TXT is associated with the "notepad" and opens with the file as one long string. This is the typical CR/LF conversions between Unix and DOS. Can Samba convert the text files based on the client? Subba Rao subb3@attglobal.net

Comments request to refute arguments about Samba...
I can't answer any of this, but the following was taken from a thread on the "Novell Technology Transfer Partners List <NOVTTP@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU>" and passed over to me by my boss... Any comments/refutations/etc most definitely accepted... Please note that *I'm* the Senior Unix Systems Administrator at the University I work at, and have been moving us towards Samba since I

3.86-pre1 gpxelinux.0 SIS900 long boot time / fails to boot / no entries in tftp server log
Okay guys, This is separate from my last few messages. Along with those attempts, I decided to migrate from pxelinux.0 to gpxelinux.0 in my existing setup. Admittedly I haven't tried previous gpxelinux.0's but I am willing to if someone thinks it would be useful. Everything works as expected with pxelinux.0 of the same version. Resampling Stats software
Hi, I am new to R (I have most of my experience in SAS and SPSS). I was wondering if anyone has used both Resampling Stats and R, and could comment on strengths/relationships. Also, I have no clue on how to do the various examples from the book "Resampling: The New Statistics" in R. Can anyone give me some possible starting points? Or websites/books? Thanks, Brandon

No luck with "UNIX password sync"
I was very excited when I ran across the "UNIX password sync" directive in the smb.conf!!! THAT would be convenient and really add to the making the server seamless!! Unfortunately I haven't been able to get the unix and smbpasswords to sync from changing within win95. The posts I've seen in the mailing list concerning sync have so far gone unanswered :-( I'm just looking
