Mounting shares works fine.
I've run samba for a few years never had any problems printing

--link-dest
Clearly I'm missing something about --link-dest; I know it works because
rsnapshot is doing the right thing on this system, but it's not on
another system, and I'm trying to troubleshoot that. The first step is
to be able to verify that --link-dest works on it, but I can't even get
it to work in an known-good environment --- no matter how I specify the
args to it, it's

What could cause rsync to kill ssh?
Rsync 3.2.7 is running on the Gentoo computer, which doesn't have a version, other than it's "current". I'm running the script from this computer.
Rsync 3.1.2 is on the source computer, where the files come from, which is Ubuntu 18.0.4.6.
I'm copying to a CIFS share mounted on the Gentoo computer.
The rsync scripts are all similar to this one:
/usr/bin/rsync -v -a

Rsync 3.2.3 released
Beach ball play is fun, but I see this ball bounched betwen rsync, openbsd and supermicro, and I am not enjoying it. I see a large cache delivered by the OS on server hardware and a program unable to use it.

From OCFS to tape via tar (and back again)
We're using RMAN to back up our 9.2 RAC database to an OCFS v1 volume.
We have an existing shell script that we use for copying files from disk
to tape via tar, one file at a time. (Don't ask why. It's a legacy
script. Long story.) We're tweaking this script to use --o_direct when
tarring the file to tape and that seems to be working fine:
# tape device is /dev/nst0
$ tar

Help with dump/restore
So I recently installed an Overland Arcvault 12 tape library on a server
to back up /var/log/ and /home. The server is an out-of-box RHEL 5
install, with all packages selected, in an isolated lan, with no package
updates. Also, this is a live server that cannot be brought down for
backups, and some files may be actively in use during the dump - just
gotta live with it.
Since I know EL5 and

sg device
What is the "sg" device?
The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on
a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to
a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is
connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm
using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1
TB a month

Dump levels?
I created a cron job to invoke a dump script according to Tower Of Hanoi.
I am dumping a subdirectory and a filesystem.
The backup script, with some other lines removed:
/path/to/dump -0 -fv /dev/nst0 /var/log
/path/to-dump -3 -fv /dev/nst0 /home
When viewing the dump logs, it looks like it is taking the whole job as
a level 0. Am missing something?
Thanks.

slow backup using W98
I have been using Samba as a Windows server replacement for years, both
in my shop and most of my clients. Recently I replaced a WNT 4 server at
a customer location with a Linux box - Mandrake 10.0 - which is strictly
a file server.
The machine my client is using to backup his server is a W98 box w/
350MHz/256MB, an HP Travan tape drive and Stomp Backup My PC V5.0. This
backup was taking about 4

Xen driver domain...character device?
Greetings,
Does anyone know if it is possible to give a guest domain access to character
device hardware such as a SCSI tape drive (/dev/st0 | /dev/nst0)? I have
recompiled the guest xenU kernel with hardware access and declared the pci SCSI
card in the config file directive as follows:
pci = [ ''4,3,0'' ]
The log file when started reports:

Tape Drive and Bacula issue
I posted this in the Bacula list without success so I hope I might have some luck here. Btape and mt can access my DDS-3 Seagate Archive Python 06480-xxx tape drive but Bacula tray-mon ends up finally stating that it cannot open device /dev/nst0? That is the device string that I use to access the drive, oddly enough it also suggest the SD could not open the one file based storage location I have

[HW/OT] Recommend vendor to recover data from LTO4 tapes
Posting here in the hope that some one may have encountered problems
with recovery from backups on LTO4 media and found a solution.
Back ups on FujiFilm LTO4 media (800/1600).
Archives created using tar -cf /dev/nst0. ?The tapes were fine when
the archives were created (tested by extracting random sample files
from them) but something went wrong in storage (no physical damage).
Now a few LTO4

Not an IMAP4 Server?
I've been testing alpha4, and every once in a while my client
(Thunderbird 1.5 RC1) tells me the dovecot isn't a valid IMAP4 server.
This is usually (maybe always) when I first bring up the client up. If
I just ask the client to get the mail again, it does so happily (without
any errors).
I must say I found dovecot as a pleasant surprise. We have been using
UW. Which didn't

Page Request
Please open a new page under TipsAndTricks called AnacondaInstallCrash. This
should be linked under Installation Tips as "Anaconda Crashes During
Installation".
I'd like to document how Travan IDE tape drive interfere with the installer

nfs locking issues...
I'm running Dovecot 1.1 RC1. I believe I've done all the due diligence
for making things working correctly over nfs. But I run into locking
issues if I run over nfs.
procmail is doing the delivery over nfs. uw-imap was ruining over nfs.
dovecot is fine if its on the nfs server (i.e. it has local access to
the disk, no nfs)
I run into lock deadlocks if I run dovecot over nfs

Was: Win98SE and Samba 2.0.10 Problems
Well the weekend didn't bring any solutions to this unhappy camper. I spent
most of my time trying to narrow down the problem again. I started out by
installing a quick copy of ZipSlack on the Win98SE machine to determine once
and for all if the problem was a Windows problem or not. Well, I tried a
simple FTP from the ZipSlack to my Mandrake 8.0 server and it hung up like
in Windows. So I
