MS Excel/NT/Samba timestamp - serious problem, bug?
A rather distressing timestamp issue (to multiple users here). Anyone seen similar behavior or have a suggestion/solution? Problem: Opening and closing an excel file (no changes/keystrokes to file) on the Samba server causes the file to be saved with time stamp of closing. (There is no autosave set on Excel - also see other info below) MS Excel 97 SR-2 NT 4.0 SP5 Solaris 2.6 or 2.7 (2

Merely Opening Excel Files Increments Last-Modification date on Samba Shares
I have had the same problem: Shared files, not owned by the user in question, were being deleted and re-written upon saving the file. Because Excel only gives user (not group) permission, it will muck up access for other users in the group. In my case, I was not enforcing anything (when the problem occurred) and my .conf only had the bare minimum of information, I also used method 3, but put a

Merely Opening Excel Files Increments Last-Modificationdate on Samba Shares
I have found the following regarding this problem: 1. It occurs only on files that (a) the user does not own AND (b) samba is forcing write permissions on (e.g. with the "force group" or "force create mode"). 2. Problem does *not* occur when "force create mode" and similar are left out of share definition, and you rely on the default standard 644 file modes and 755

Excel can't find a non-writeable .xls if parent's name not ASCII
A path like this: \\samba\ä\a.xls cannot be found by Excel unless the user (or his group) has the write privilege on the file. (The funny looking directory name is a German "a" with a lazy colon on top of it, ASCII code 0xe4.) A symbolic link "ae->ä" solves the problem: \\samba\ae\a.xls pointing to the same file through an ASCII symbolic link is OK but

Excel 'save as HTML' problem with Samba 2.0
Hello, Eversince I upgraded Samba to 2.0 version I've gotten so many calls from the users regarding Excel 'save as HTML' problem. What seems to be happening is that the users cannot save their Excel spreadsheet as html file when they were able to with the previous Samba version we had installed (Samba 1.9.18p10). According to MS 'knowledge database', this is a known MS Excel

Why is EXCEL SO SLOW on SAMBA?
Hello all, I have always experienced VERY SLOW response times on opening an EXCEL sheet ever since I had started to use SAMBA WAY back. I have been hoping that a newer release would fix this one issue but it never seems to happen. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I can open the same Excel sheet on a Novell server and it opens instantly. I have no problems with WORD documents. They

Users Losing Data - Excel Files Not Locking Properly
Hi, We have a problem like I've never seen in 8 years of running Samba in production. Two users can overwrite each other's open Excel spreadsheets. It occurs very infrequently, basically randomly, never happens on a recently restarted smbd instance, and is extremely difficult to troubleshoot due to samba switching process ownership from the user to "root" shortly after

excel 2000: "File Error data may have been lost"
I am using Excel 2000 Standard with wine-1.1.16 on Centos5, and get several bugs: First, it wouldn't open my files directly, but open a blank worksheet, so that I have to open it manually. I can live with that. Second, I get a message saying: "File Error, data may have been lost", when I open my file, after enabling the macros. The file will open anyway. The only missing data I

Merely Opening Excel Files Increments Last-Modification date on Samba Shares
Hello Everyone! Perhaps some of you have some advice for dealing with this problem? I've done quite a bit of googling on this one, but I can't find anything useful. Ever since I started using Samba as PDC, I have had this problem: when users merely open MS-Excel files on samba shares, the file's Last-Modification date is incremented to the current time. I have seen similar

Excel & samba-3.0.11 slowness/hanging/lockup issues... Anyone?
Here's the problem we're encountering: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Having intermittent problems regarding users opening/accessing/saving/writing MS Excel files into samba shares. When a user accesses a file on a shared volume via samba, they can open an Excel file and end up with one of two conditions; either their system hangs after opening the file for a short pause

Problem with opening Excel spreadsheets that client cannot write to
We have some Excel spreadsheets stored on our Samba 2.2.8 fileserver. The permissions are set such that some users can write to these and some cannot, but they can all read them (the world-readable bit is set). When a user with read/write access tries to open the spreadsheet, there is no problem. The user is happy and productive and outside the sun is shining. Excellent! Have a biscuit! When a

Excel opens files as read-only
Hello! A few users on my network has complained about Excel opening files as read-only. What is weird is that the files aren't. I can open such a file using notepad and write to it, but when the same file is opened in Excel, Excel says it's read-only. Anyone know what the problem is? Workstations run WinXP and office is 2k3. These files are shared between many users, but I don't

Problem with Excel Files and Acls
Hi, I've allready seen a lot of posts about problems with Excel 2000, but I couldn't find one exactly matching my case. I'm using a self (and maybe badly) compiled samba 3.0.20 on debian, using ACLs. We're using ADS and winbind (some older NT4 domains remain) The users can't open some excel files, spitting a message such as 'the file is readonly or you're trying
