Problems with Self extracting zip files
Hi folks, I have a curious problem when executing self extracting zip files from a samba share. Everything does work, but it is very very slow. Copying the .exe onto local disk (from the samba share) takes no time at all (500kb/sec). I would say it takes about 10 times as long to unzip when run directly from the samba share. This happens will all self-extracting exe files, and also from any share

Unable to save files to share
Following the recent "trans2" exploit announcement, SuSE released kernel 2.6.5-7.111.5 to deal with it. I've installed the kernel upgrade on my desktop (SuSE 9.1, Samba 3.0.4). However, with this kernel, when I try to save to a share on my server (Samba 2.2.8), I get this set of error messages: Dec 13 22:10:25 p133 kernel: smb_trans2: invalid data, disp=0, cnt=0, tot=0, ofs=0 Dec 13

Security question about suspect logfile entries
Hello, in the last days I found some entries in nmb.log on one of my servers: process_node_status_request: status request for name *<00> from IP 195.232.44.19 0 on subnet REMOTE_BROADCAST_SUBNET - name not found. (repeated many times) The host on this ip is not exactly in my domain :-) # nslookup Default Name Server: localhost Address: 127.0.0.1 > set type=PTR > 195.232.44.190 Name

Compuserve through wine
Has anybody had success in running Compuserve or a related program through their fake_windows drive? I think that the main problems would be a) Compuserve's proprietary dialer b)Compuserve's proprietary browser c)Compuserve's proprietary timing mechanism ( that measures how long you've been online) d) A failure of the fstab in fake_windows to recognize your modem as a valid

Can I use "mcnemar.test" for 3*3 tables (or is there a bug in the command?)
Hello all, I wish to perform a mcnemar test for a 3 by 3 matrix. By running the slandered R command I am getting a result but I am not sure I am getting the correct one. Here is an example code: (tt <- as.table(t(matrix(c(1,4,1 , 0,5,5, 3,1,5), ncol = 3)))) mcnemar.test(tt, correct=T) #And I get: McNemar's Chi-squared

summary of responses to "firewalls, a practical question"
A little over a week ago I posted asking about setting up a linux box between an existing router and a switch in order to provide firewall service to a subnet of machines. I was curious what experience others had with this type of setup in terms of machines, configurations, and the appropriateness of using linux in this manner. There were basically three issues discussed in replies: hardware

Winetools is terrific
Yesterday, I finally jad an extended opportunity to try using wt to set up wine again. Last time I tried, ie wouldn't work when I got through. This time, it worked great. I am thinking that part of the problem was due to the time required for the download of IE, using the dialup connection. Winsserver timed out a number of times. By installing again, the downloaded stuff was already there,

Almost MS-free
I am two applications away from being MS-free. The second is Photo-Paint, but that's another message. The first is CompuServe 2.6.1, a/k/a WinCim. If I try to run cs261.exe under wine, it crashes with a blank error window after attempting to run InstallShield. If I just try to copy the files from my old computer and run wincim.exe under wine, absolutely nothing happens (which is absolutely

smbmount/kernel 2.4.2/Samba 2.0.7 - Unable to use large files/directories
Hi there. I'm having a very odd problem with samba. I have a Mandrake 7.2 linux distro, though I've compiled a 2.4.2 kernel for it (with samba support compiled in - not a module), and I've also compiled Samba 2.0.7. When I mount shares from my win98 machines, if I try to list a large directory or open a large file, the terminal freezes. I'm able to log in another, but if I

Centos7 - remove /home and expand / after install?
I did a default install and after installing some other things I realized that a lot of space was allocated to /home as an lvm that is never going to be used. Is it possible to remove the lvm and grow the root (xfs) filesystem without starting over? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com
