smbmount deprecated - what about Windows 9x?
Hallo, I've just installed Kernel 2.6.25.2 - works fine. But now when I use "smbmount" for mounting shares from my Win9x clients the system (kernel) tells me smbfs is deprecated and will be removed from the 2.6.27 kernel. Please migrate to cifs. But at least Win9x seems not to like cifs. Mounting via smbfs works since years, mounting (with the same options) via cifs

[smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here] Hi! To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my Windows desktop machine to the Linux box. This used to

smbmount how to?
I want to access files on my Windows PC from my Linux PC running Samba. I've looked at the documentation for smbmount, but like most Linux documentation, it documents the "what is" not the"how to". Could some kind-hearted, experienced soul give me the actual configurations and commands needed to mount a directory of the Windows 98 file system on my Linux file tree so that

pre-/postexec in printers-section
Hi, after updating our printserver from Samba V2.0.6 to V2.2.7 I encountered the following problem. Samba does not execute the (root) pre- and postexec within the printers section. If you are using these command in another section everything works fine. Does anybody know if these command are not supported in the printers section anymore? smb.conf: [global] ... load printers = yes lpq cache

can smbmount access paths in shares?
Can a linux machine running samba mount a pathname within a share into a local path? I'm runing samba-3.0.20b-1 on a centos 4.1 (rhel4) box. I've tried this and it fails: smbmount //servername/home/media /mnt/media/server/ -o username=myuser, password=mypass The error is: 8465: tree connect failed: ERRDOS - ERRnosuchshare (You specified an invalid share name) When I omit the last

smbmount discontinued?
In a past thread I've notice that smbmount (and mount's suport for it) will be discontinued and smbclient should be used insted. Sorry if the question is too lame but I use it in some of my systems now and I think I'll have trouble porting then to smbclient. Is smbmount been removed because it relays on kernel smb support? Samba will not need smb support in kernel in the

2.0.6: HUP/charset/profiles/smbmount/logging
This is the list of problems I had with samba-2.0.6 so far. Can anyone tell me if he can reproduce them and if he considers them as problems? 2.0.6 on linux 2.2.13 or 2.0.33 1) sighup/log reopening doesn't always work: connections that are already active keep logging to the old logs; logrotate rotates/zip the logs and samba stops logging completely till restart. 2) Localized chars. smbmount problem
Hello. I hope that this is the proper place to ask this. Here is my problem. I have several smbmounts under Red Hat Linux 5.1. They need to be accessed by my apache web server. One of the mounts keeps getting disconnected, but this is not noticed by Linux. So the Linux box thinks that the files under the smbmount are still accessable when they aren't actually mounted. What would be the best

How to improve Samba write performance?
I recently sent the message below to this list, hoping I could get advise on improving Samba (v2.0.6) write performance from an OS/2 client (I got no responses). I subsequently ran the same tests from a Linux client using smbmount, also v2.0.6, and got the same results. The hardware config of the Linux client is the same as the OS/2 client below. Obviously, the problem is not

does smbmount use keepalive and/or smb.conf?
Greetings, I don't know how common an issue this is as I haven't found much in the list archives that was helpful to me, so I'm hoping for some pointers. FYI, we have samba 2.3.3a-6 running on the 2.4.18-10 kernel. There seems to be an issue with smbfs mounts at times where connectivity may be lost (e.g. Win share becomes unavailable) causing local processes such as lsof or ps,

Samba 2.0.6pre1 released
I've just released a snapshot of 2.0.6 in the alpha directory on samba.org. This is intended for testing to make sure some of the recent changes work well on a wider range of sites. I have also built a RedHat Linux 6.X RPM and put it in the same dircetory. If you are not running a mission critical site then we would appreciate feedback on this snapshot. If you have reported a bug in Samba

smbmount questions
Howdy all: I'm trying to use smbmount to mount a win9x share and copy some files for backup, eventually to run as a script invoked via cron. I have RH6.1/samba 2.0.5a, and the windoze box is win95b. If I do the standard mount (smbmount //winbox/backup /mnt/smb04) I have to be root. Also, after it's mounted, I can't create any files there as a normal user (even though the

smbmounts hang around after windows client disconnects
Using 2.2.1a and a 2.4 kernel patched for win4lin. Everything is working but: I mount all the available network shares on my linux box as root to one network directory. If a windows client shuts down while the linux box is still connected, the share is not removed from my mount list or from /proc/mounts It cannot be removed with umount. I can kill the smbmount with kill -15 but the share is still

Pointer to simple mail server setup?
Hello. I need to set up a mail server for a small (~5 people) organization on CentOS 5.1. While I am very familiar with CentOS and Linux in general, I have zero experience in setting up a POP3(s)/SMTP mail server. I suppose eventually I'd like to do spam/virus filtering, but initially the simple sending/receiving of mail will be adequate. Can someone point me to a tutorial on setting

version_ignore=yes
Hello, When upgrading Dovecot, I get this: Dovecot version mismatch: Master is v2.0.6, imap-login is v2.0.7 (if you don't care, set version_ignore=yes) This should not occur as version_ignore=yes is in dovecot.conf, at the top. Cheers, Olivier

Any way to reduce CPU use of OpenSSH?
On my CentOS v5.2 server (dual Pentium4) the OpenSSH daemon stands out as being the most CPU-intensive of the applications running, It's used 176 minutes of CPU time in the last 2 days alone. Is there any way to lower the CPU utilization without compromising security? (I.e. without using a less processor-intensive encrypt/decrypt algorithm?) I'm getting the CPU use figures from top,
