write behind operation warning. What's it mean.
Dear All,
We are seeing the following warning messages in event logs on PCs that are accessing a
Samba server (Solaris 2.7, samba 2.0.6):-

Unsolicited oplock breaks
Dear All,
we've been having some intermittent problems with students who's home directories are on a
Sun E450 running Samba 2.0.6. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is caused by the
server, but may be the network. However, I've had a look at the log.smb file and I'm seeing some
error messages that I've not come across before:

Too many smbd processes running, connections dropping.
I'm running Samba 2.0.4b on a E450 running Solaris 7 which acts as a diskspace server for
students, normally everything runs quite smoothly with numbers of connections in the region of
about 800/900. Then every now and again students will start seeing their connections being lost
and others will not get a connection when they log in, looking at the system shows no obvious
problems, except

Severe problem with Samba
Dear All,
we are experiencing severe problems with Samba 2.2.0 (with quota support) running on a
dual processor (400MHz) Sun E450 running Solaris 2.7. This is used as a central file server for
student diskspace, accessed by approx 1200 PCs running NT 4. Up until recently we
experienced some, what we assume to be, loading issues with connections during the middle of
the day being slow.

Massive number of processes bringing system to a halt.
Dear All,
I'm running SAMBA 2.0.5a on a Sun 450 running Solaris 7. In the past I've had an occasional
problem with processes running amok and causing the server to grind to a halt, which I've put
down to network glitches as they seemed to coincide with problems on the network. But today
I've had 3 instances where the number of smbd processes has just steadily increased until

Directory listing hangs if links can not be followed.
I've just come across a problem that had me baffled for a bit. We supply students with
diskspace via a Solaris machine running Samba (2.0.6). Yesterday, I got a report that a couple
of students could not access their diskspace, although at login time the drive was getting
mapped. The problem was that if they tried to view the contents of the directory (explorer or dir)
the process would

Samba and ZFS
Hi,
I've recently moved our student fileserver from a Solaris 10 server
that was using UFS filesytems to a new Sun Cluster. As part of the move
I decided to employ ZFS for the filesystem so that I could take
advantage of some of ZFS's features. However, it now seems that windows
does not report the amount of space that the user is actually using, or
the amount of quota left,

cross-subnet browsing problems
I'm trying to set up cross-subnet browsing using Samba on a Linux box
and a Sparc UltraEnterprise with Win95 and NT Workstation clients. I'm
using the Sparc as the domain master and also as the WINS server on the
108 subnet. The Linux box is the local master on the 46 subnet. Both
are running Samba 1.9.17alpha4. I can see the conversation between the
two samba servers and the browse

Good... this function, originally named print.coefmat(),
is 25 years old (in R) now:

How to analysis Y98 chips using RankProd package?
Dear R and Bioconductor Helpers,
I am using a package called RankProd under Bioconductor to analysis my
Y98 (yeast) microarray data. I had no problem following the example in
the vignette but got stocked when I tried to analyze my own data.
When I tried to run the following command,
RP.out <- RP(rrf.sub, rrf.cl.sub, gene.names = y98.gnames, rand = 123)
I got the following response:

Compiling SAMBA on Solaris 10 to use AD on Windows 2008 server
We've just set up a number of linux servers to access our AD server
(Windows server 2008) and now have to set up a Solaris server. I've
downloaded, compiled and install Samba (3.4.2), configured kerberos and
am now trying to get it to join the AD. I get the following error:
samba-3.4.2/source3# net ads join -U username

1.2.4 disk full errors
Hi.
A user on a rather old mail system we have filled their disk space,
and Dovecot has started to give lots of errors in the logs about
"Expunged message reappeared" and "Duplicate file entry". The user can
only see a few new messages, not the 33,551 in their inbox.
In the TODO file in the current source code[1], Timo notes that (line 147):

[LLVMdev] LLVM Hello Pass load error when using opt -load Hello.so
Thanks, Shu,
I guess I haven't updated since my post went out.
There are actually 2 problems:
1. mis-compilation:
My LLVM-2.5 turned out to be mis-compiled using gcc-4.4.0 (surprise to
me) on Debian4-32b.
I tried a few different compilers, and gcc-4.0.4 (a relatively old one,
again surprised me) seems to work out fine.
Question: is there a good/quick/reliable way to figure out whether a

Plot to a device and examine the plot?
Hi All,
I want to inspect the content of a plot generated by another function.
For example:
plot.new()
polygon(c(.5, .5, .75, .8), c(.25, .3, .4, .5))
A polygon will be drawn. If I do not know what has been done to generate
the plot, is it possible to query the content in the active device?

Shu Fai

handling big data set in R
Hello R users,
I'm wondering whether it is possible to manage big data set in R? I
have a data set with 3 million rows and 3 columns (X,Y,Z), where X is
the group id. For each X, I need to run 2 regression on the submatrix.
I used the function "split":
datamatrix<-read.csv("datas.csv", header=F, sep=",")
dim(datamatrix)
