Your message Re: Samba and printer comments (July 5 1999)
Yes unfortunately I do not have much luck recieving help from the SAMBA
mailing list.
After much playing I found something weird that was seemingly causing
incorrect comments. Most printers would recieve the comment - "no
entries" which originally I assumed to be the default comment given by
Win95 when it could not get a proper comment. However I later found
that this is not the case.

Automatic install of printer drivers + comments
Greetings all,
Recently we implemented the automatic install of printers (+ their
associated drivers) for our Windows 95 clients. Originally we achieved
it using Samba 2.0.4. Unfortunately we could not get the comment field
(as configured at the client) to get automatically filled in. After
upgrading to 2.0.4b we found that 'magically' the comment field was
filled in with the same

Can't locate point and print (printer) driver files
We have recently implemented printing via SAMBA for our site. In most
cases clients are able to double click on printers from a browse window
and have the driver files automatically install. However in alot of
other cases, the client computer 'decides' that it can't locate the
files. In these instances we are advising users to manually type in
\\SMBSERVER\PRINTER$\PRINTERNAME which

HP2500 Printer under SAMBA
Has anyone else managed to get the 'point and print' (automatic driver
installation - PRINTER$) system to work with the Hewlett Packard 2500
Colour inkjet. I have taken a look at the HP web site and it seems that
they have changed the format of the driver INF files (and hence does not
work with the make_printerdef utility).
I have almost managed to get it to work (by a little hacking).

Problem with socket options after upgrading to Samba 2.0.6
Hi there everyone,
Again another slight thing I noticed since I upgraded to Samba 2.0.6 from
2.0.5a. I'm using RedHat Linux on a Celeron 400 with kernel 2.2.13.
My socket options in smb.conf is set to "TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY
SO_KEEPALIVE SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192". However I've started getting
the following everytime I SIGHUP to reload the configs and stop-start:

machine name lookups
We have been looking for a way to notify our users when they
are running low on disk quota, without sending them mail.
WinPopup actually seemed like the best way, so my partner
began looking at feeding quota output into smbclient -M
when quota was getting tight.
The only problem is that smbclient -M frequently fails to find
the client's host name. The -I parameter will often fix it, but

Slow VC++ builds from Linux fileserver
We're using Samba 1.9.18p10 on a Linux 2.0.35 box as a fileserver chiefly
for software development under VC++. Builds are done from the command line,
not the IDE.
I'm seeing rather slow build performance under NT4SP3. Build performance is
fine under Win95. Build performance is also good when building from Samba
1.9.18p8 running on a Sun UltraSparc.
To give some concrete figures, building

NT4 performance in Netware primary login.
Samba Gurus.
We run W95 and NT4 clients in a mixed environment
of Netware and Samba on SGs. Netware is the primary
network login(over IPX/SPX). Am using clear text passwords for the
Samba network. NT 4 is patched up to SR 3.
Samba version 1.9.18p7.
Problem.
Samba performance from NT 4 machines is VERY slow.
Many orders of magnitude slower than W95 which is
very good.
This performance

FW: : Re: Multiple smbd processes generated
Dear Dave,
Doesn't this only work if you're using samba as a domain
controller and the client says "net use h: /home"
I've not got it to redirect "//server1/username" to "//server2/username"
when the NIS map says "user server2:/path/&"
Though if it could be done I'd be VERY keen.

Client frequent disconnection + strange logs
Hello,
Although I've been using samba for years at my customers
office, I recently moved one on a HP E60 server running
RedHat 6.2.
The samba version is 2.0.6, untouched from the distribution.
They use a (weird) accounting software built on the top of
FoxPro, requiring a *huge* amount of open files. I accordingly
raised the values for files-nr and inode-nr and the stats seem
ok.
They have

Dealing with DLL name overlap in Win32 printer drivers under SAMBA
Hi - samba-list newbie here.
Trying to setup SAMBA print sharing (over CUPS as the print layer) with
**native** Windows print drivers being made available to the connecting
workstations... We've already tried the Postscript/PPD approach, but
with the multifunction/mopier machines we've got here, native is
definitely best to get all the options/interlocks shown.
Problem is that the

Usage figures
When the students arrive in a few weeks, we will have several thousand
registered samba users and (we anticipate) several hundred simultaneous
Samba connections. (This will be our first period of significant Samba
use.)
Our management folks are asking about collecting periodic Samba usage
figures. This is a bit vague, but something like a rolling count of
simultaneous connections, per-user

Win2k & 2.0.7
When I try to join the Win2k machine to a domain, I get the following message:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "WIN2K":
The procedure number is out of range.
This is a Win2k PC attempting to join to AIX 4.3.2 running samba 2.0.7. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

intermittent browsing
I recently downloaded and installed binary versions of Samba 2.0.7 on two
Sun Microsystems platforms running Solaris 7. One of the machines is an
Enterprise 5000 and the other is an Ultra 10. I set up both servers for USER
lever security and set all shares to be browseable. Both were set to be in
workgroup SUN.
When first installed, both machines appeared in workgroup Sun under Entire

change notify timeout Performance issue
I have just been upgrading my Samba servers from 1.9.18p10 to 2.0.6
So far as I can tell users have been happy (or at least not noticed!).
Our clients are almost exclusively NT 4.0 (most at SP5).
Our servers are Suns running Solaris 2.5.1 and 7.
On upgrading 2 of our busier servers (for admin - home directories and NT
binaries), I observed a considerable increase in server load.

Re: Looking for answers....
[Redirected to the general samba list]
One of the things which Samba provides is a facility
to run a "preexec" script before allowing a user to connect
to a directory, and refuse to make the conenction if
the script returns a non-zero result.
This can prevent someone from logging on twice,
limit them to specific hours, from conencting to
the wrong directory and so on.

Please Help! Re: Using smbpasswd (fwd)
I am trying to get encrypted passwords working for a Linux/Samba server
serving Win9x clients. We want the students to be able to logon either
the Samba file system or the Linux server and allow the students to
change their password from either. I would really appreciate any help
on this matter. We need to get this working as quickly as possible as
the old Netware server is on life support.

Always via logical expressions. In this case you can use the logical expression

to give you a vector of TRUE/FALSE
