problems running samba on Caldera 2.3?
I have the default installation of samba (2.0.5) that came with Caldera OL 2.3, but it doesn't seem to be starting up properly, nor is SWAT working. When I run the script 'samba start', I get the message "Starting samba: smbd nmbd", but when I check the running processes, only nmbd shows up. Running smbstatus gives me the message "Couldn't open status file

2.0.4b: logrotate problems with rh60
The 2.04b rpm for rh60 ships with and installs a config file for logrotate (the samba.log file in the packaging/RedHat section). ===== /var/log/samba/log.nmb { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP nmbd endrotate } /var/log/samba/log.smb { postrotate /usr/bin/killall -HUP smbd endrotate } ===== 1) I think that the use of "endrotate" is wrong. Win98 SE, Samba 2.0.5, abysmal write performance
I am running Win 98 SE and have a Samba server v2.0.5 on a FreeBSD 3.3 system. Both machines sit on the same 100baseTX subnet. I am seeing expected read performance, but writes from Win98 to the Samba share are terrible; upwards of 30 seconds to copy a 900kb file (yes, that's kb). This happens in both Explorer, the DOS "shell", and in the application that actually created the file

REPEAT: hasn't anyone used smbclient linux->linux?
I cannot get smbclient or smbmount to work from linux -> linux. I'm running 2.05a on Red Hat 6.x servers. I can use NT shares from linux. I can use samba shares from NT & 95. Is there some trick to getting this to work between linux machines?

Purely numeric service name
Hi I have a problem accessing NT boxes which have a service (host) name which is purely numeric, smbclient insists on treating it as an ip number. For example:- /opt/samba/bin/smbclient \\\\06842\\BACKUP xxxxx -U xxxxx returns :- Connecting to 0.0.14.34 at port 139 Connection to 06842 failed I am using HPUX 10.2 and samba version 2.0.4b. Surely it should be possible to connect to NT

2.0.6: HUP/charset/profiles/smbmount/logging
This is the list of problems I had with samba-2.0.6 so far. Can anyone tell me if he can reproduce them and if he considers them as problems? 2.0.6 on linux 2.2.13 or 2.0.33 1) sighup/log reopening doesn't always work: connections that are already active keep logging to the old logs; logrotate rotates/zip the logs and samba stops logging completely till restart. 2) Localized chars. [smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here] Hi! To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my Windows desktop machine to the Linux box. This used to

nbtstat doesn't show MAC address for samba servers
On Win9x I issue the command: nbtstat -a <netbios name> If <netbios name> is a Win9x machine I got the MAC address of that machine on the last line of the command output. If it's a samba server the MAC address is not returned: MAC Address = 00-00-00-00-00-00 Is there anyone who gest the MAC address back from a samba server? -- giulioo@tiscalinet.it

oplock_break: MS kb articles
I found these articles that talk about the oplock_break problem (specifically they are related to problems with word97): http://support.microsoft.com/support/ntserver/serviceware/nts40/e9msge2bc.asp http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q163/5/25.asp Basically they say: either apply sp3 on the winnt client or disable oplock on nt server But they don't say anything about win9x,

No automatic refresh?
Hi! I've been struggling with this install of Samba 2.0.4b on Linux/x86 2.0.36. All of the client machines run Windows NT 4, SP 3. I'm exporting /tmp as pub, and if I right click in the folder and create a new folder, it doesn't show up until I go to 'view' and 'refresh'. If I delete something, it doesn't go away until I refresh. Why? Output of testparm:

Will 5.4 be an "Extended Life" release?
In the next month or two I've got to upgrade a number of servers that are currently on an EOL'd version of 4-STABLE. I foresee that I'll have very limited time to do full OS upgrades on these systems in the coming several years, so I want to make sure I bring them onto an extended-life branch. Right now 4.11 has the furthest projected EOL date (Jan 31 2007), and the projected EOL

printing to shared remote printers (Win95) using lpr
I apologize has been discussed, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I'm trying configure my samba/debian box to allow printing to a shared printer on a win95 machine. Any help is appreciated. dynamic dns updates from WINS
I've just added the ability for nmbd to call an external program when changes happen to the WINS database in a Samba WINS server. See the option "wins hook" in Samba 2.0.6 when it is released. An example script that calls the nsupdate dynamic DNS update program is provided. Hopefully this will be useful for sites that want their dynamic windows boxes to show up in DNS. Cheers,

winpopup
Hi, I have a linux (redhat 6.0) print server and I am running samba 2.0.3-8 serving win95 machines. I would like the print server to send a message to the win95 when a print job is completed. To do that, I run winpopup on win95. However, if win95 users close winpopup, they do not receive any message. Is there any more realiable method to communicate with win95 machines?
