Problem with 1.9.18p1 and password server
In version 1.9.17.p2, a password server line in smb.conf could contain multiple
server entries and if a username/password combination failed to validate on one
server it would try against the next one until it got a match. Even if the
account existed on the first server that was tried, and the password failed,
then the subsequent server would be tried.

Downloading Reuters data from R
Hi R,
Can we download Reuters (3000 Xtra) data from R? Does ODBC package help
me in this? Or otherwise, is there a way to extract daily closing prices
data of Reuters from R?
Thank you very much,

--exclude-from works but "exclude from" in rsyncd.conf doesn't ?
I'm setting rsync up for the first time and would prefer to have the
exclude file defined in the conf file, but the exclusions aren't
honoured when I define the parameter in rsyncd.conf - although they are
when I specify the file in an argument. The server is the remote system
and both rsyncd.conf and the exclude file are the same on both local and
remote systems. I'm attaching the

Only one chance to enter a new password?
Hello there,
We are using OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d 17 Mar 2004 on various
Solaris boxes with PAM and an LDAP server back end.
Recently we have added a requirement for users to have complex
passwords. The problem is, if a user's password has expired, when they
log in they are prompted for a new password (good) but if they enter a
non-complex new password the session is closed rather than

Any plans implement MaxAuthTriesLog?
Hello there,
I've just upgraded to 3.9p1 and I notice that I'm not getting any "Too
many authorization failure" messages written to my syslog.
This seems to be controlled by MaxAuthTriesLog in Sun's implementation
of SSH. Are there any plans to do the same in OpenSSH?
Regards,
Richard Dickens

Porting to Dynix 4.1.3...
Hello there,
I am trying to build OpenSSH on the above (very old) version of unix.
With a bit of hacking, I have managed to get everything to compile and
run. Scp works fine however when I log in via ssh I end up with a
session without a controlling terminal.
I have followed the code in pty_make_controlling_tty and it seems to go
as follows:
1. Starts with a controlling tty.
2. setsid works,

SP6 for Windows NT terminal server AND SAMBA - 2ND try
Had no replies, so here goes again.
We recently installed the Terminal server SP6.0 on Windows Terminal
server. And are now having problems opening some files with some
applications from samba shares. We have traced it to being a file open
function used by apps.
such as notepad and perl.
Any ideas what has changed in SP6 and how to fix it?

include/exclude directory question
I want to send a subset of directories sepcified in "include" arguments
to a client, but I am creating all the
peer and parent directories as well, although they are empty - here is
basically what I'm doing.
assuming I have /staging/upgrade/dir1, /staging/upgrade/dir2 and
/staging/upgrade/dir3 on the source tree.

package tm: reading XML files
Dear fellow R users,
I'm using the package tm for text mining, and have a problem with
reading in a corpus from XML files.
When I copy the example from "Introduction to the tm package" of the
small reuters subset "crude", everything goes well, and I get a corpus
with the required meta data.
When I read in the entire reuters21578 corpus in XML format however (or

Compare ignoring the size AND file suffix: (not/) compressed files in a directory tree
Hello all,
Here, we use rsync for years to share software tests distributions
between from France
to USA, Singapore and London, and all is working fine.
But to save space we also need to compress files depending on their
access time, and
on purpose uncompress automatically before use.
This makes rsync useless because it makes, of course re-transfer and
deletions. when a
new file is detected

Troubles with stemming (tm + Snowball packages) under MacOS

rsync .gz files?
I've run across a situation where I have a directory of .gz files. I do
want to rsync this directory.
I've tried without the --compress (because they are already compressed) but
the files never get rsynced.
Interactively, I get the following error:
:rsync error: some files could not be transferred (code 23) at main.c(1045)
In the /etc/rsyncd.log, for each of the files, I get:

2.0.6/Sol. 251/NTW4 - Drive mapping anomaly
Has anyone seen the following anomaly?
When I first connect to the Samba server, I run a logon script that maps
5 shares to drives F,G,H,L,M.
Some time later, when I check "My Computer", I find that the share
mapped to H: has been mapped to all the remaining drive letters as well!
For example, after I mount /users on G: and /programs on H:, I'll notice
at some point later that I

Assertion failure in ext3_prepare_write() at inode.c:934: "handle != 0"
Hi. I was using ext3 0.0.1 without any problems in the last
33 days (same boot). / was still ext2, but I changed /etc/fstab
to ext3. /home/ftp/pub/ is ext3. I mounted
/home/ftp/pub/slakware/bare.i with loopback in /mnt/floppy/.
After some time:
