smbmount'ed fs "dies" after a short time
I have a linux (RH6) client that smbmounts a filesystem from an NT server. After some short unspecified period of time, all attempts to access the mounted filesystem on the linux box result in "Input/Output Error". I can't even smbumount the file system (same error message). The NT system continues to function, and other MS clients (Win95 and NT) do not have any problems with the

Changing Windows passwords
Hi all, Is there a way to use the "encrypt passwords" and the "passwd chat" programs simultaneously? smb.conf(5) doesn't mention anything about them being mutually exclusive, yet when I run testparm on the smb.conf file, I get: ERROR: the 'passwd chat' script [...] expects to use the old plaintext password via the %o substitution. request_oplock_break - a clue - what does it mean ?
Hi all, I increased the log level, and found something very interesting out. I know now what causes a sbmd to go into infinite hibernation on Solaris. I do not know why, it is probably something Solaris specific, I thought that a "dont descend" would have resolved my problem, but it has not. details at the end. request_oplock_break: no response received to oplock break request
Hello, I've been running samba 2.0.7 for a couple years now on a DEC alpha with Tru64 4.0D. I't pertty much a default smb.conf as far as oplocks & that sort of stuff. Anyway, the other day some users started having troubles with saving ms-word files. The smbd processes have always been running as root. But now the users with the problem own their smbd process. And they get

Corrupted Excel files, oplock_break(905) errors
Hi there everyone! I'm using Samba 2.0.5a-19990721 on a RedHat 6.0 machine with Linux kernel 2.2.12. My system generally works fine, however recently I've had some complaints about some files being corrupted. The latest and best-handled to enable a debugging happened at around the same time. Both clients were using Windows95 OSR2 machines with Excel 97 SP-2. Two users reported the problem

Client frequent disconnection + strange logs
Hello, Although I've been using samba for years at my customers office, I recently moved one on a HP E60 server running RedHat 6.2. The samba version is 2.0.6, untouched from the distribution. They use a (weird) accounting software built on the top of FoxPro, requiring a *huge* amount of open files. I accordingly raised the values for files-nr and inode-nr and the stats seem ok. They have

SOLARIS_2.6: request_oplock_break
I saw a little discussion about this a few weeks ago but nothing concrete. We're running samba-1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.6x86. I am periodically getting the following in the logfiles, usually _many_ at a time: 1998/11/03 14:42:00 request_oplock_break: no response received to oplock break request to pid 5411 on port 40884 for dev = 1980040, inode = 33c4d When I look up the PID (in this case

I already installed rsync on both my server(running FREEBSD 4.4) and win98 macine. My LAN don't connect to the internet so it is quite secure, is it possible if I don't use OpenSSH? when I run "rsync 172.22.0.104::", I get this message: "failed to cennect to 172.22.0.104 - Resource is remote" 172.22.0.104 is the ip address of my server. authentication failure
Hi, I've just installed Samba 2.0.3 and now I'm getting following error: PAM_pwdb[306]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0) -> andreas for samba service I can connect to all shares and printers, but get the error. I suppose it has something to do with the passwords (I'm trying to sync Samba and Linux passwords). Any ideas? /Andreas

howto enable ssh on connect to rsync daemon
Hi, I'm trying to setup automatic sync of files over SSH from node2 to node1. node2 is the "server" and node1 is the "client". I have setup rsync like this on the nodes which runs AIX (4.3.3 and 5.1): 1. Installed rsync from Linux Toolbox (rsync-2.5.4-1.aix4.3.ppc.rpm) on both nodes. 2. Added following to both nodes /etc/services file: rsync 873/tcp 3. Added

dptr_create: returned 9: Error - all new dirptrs in use ?
Hi, I get this error message in the log for a Win98 client which is regularly scanning a directory on the share. When this happens the client no longer can access any data in the shares (security=share), only the toplevel directory structure of a share is still accessible. This seems to be a new problem in 2.0.5/6pre (not sure if it already happened for 2.0.4). Any hints? Franz. Platform:

Adobe Photoshop problem with saving on Samba shares
We are experiencing problems with Adobe Photoshop and Samba, all versions up to 2.0.6. We run Samba off Compaq Alphaservers (ie 64 bit). Symptoms: 1) On doing a "Save As" in Photoshop, we intermittently get: "Could not save as F:\<filename> because the file is already in use or was left open". A zero length file is left on the Samba share. 2) Problem only

SWAT reports daemons not running?
Samba 2.0.5a on two Sun E4000's running Solaris 2.6. SWAT on one of them reports the daemons as running like it should but on the other the daemons are _always_ reported as not running, even though they are, and even though the actual connections _are_ still listed on the status page! Any ideas? -- Gang Warily
