IPMASQ and lock-up of all terminals
[mod: This is the second time in a week that someone asks this
question: is it a new attack? It sure looks to me like "userland" has
completely locked up, but that the kernel is still working. As an
isolated case, my diagnosis is: You probably have a bad block in your
/bin/login program or something like that. When two people report this
in a week, it's starting to become unlikely

using samba to authenticate
Hi all,
I need some help with samba, I have RH6.0 and samba 2.0.5 now I would like
to set the system
so that any user from the windows network can log on to the Linux box
without creating a new user
everytime. Is this possible?

generating secure ARGON2ID passwords
Hello,
I'm using dovecot 2.3.4.1 on a Debian buster system.
with Argon2ID password scheme, it's only possible to configure the
parameters used for it via the generic -r option to "doveadm pw".
A higher -r will increase time and memory comsumption.
But on my dual core VM it always uses p=1.
So it seems the needed threads can only be changed on compile time?
Will there be in

smbmount intermittent problems
I use smbmount to mount a number of NT shares from around a global network
in order to sync from a master distribution which resides in linux.
Specifically...
uklnxsrv$ smbmount //NTSRV/share -c 'mount /tmp/temporary_mount -u 502 -g
510' -U guest%guest_passwd
Frequently it works well, but from time to time the mounted NT share, for
lack of a better word gets corrupted. Here are the

User's smbd processes don't get killed
Hi, all.
Last saturday, we've done a cutover for Samba 2.0.5a to be our new
fileserver. All is going well, except for two network users that make me
reboot the server.
What happens is as follows:
* user logs on onto samba server;
* user opens and closes files, etc, OK until in one of these
operations his/her machine hangs;
* user reboots his/her machine to log on again. In this

1.2pre17 scp Input/Output error
Under OpenSSH 1.2pre17 I can duplicate and Input/Output error for scp:
Conditions:
pc36 is a RH6.0/i386 box.
abc.co.za is a RH5.2/i386 box. (private network)
openssh 1.2 pre 17 on both boxes.
Line between them is a 128k leased line. It works between two 10baseT
machines.
If the scrollbar is active, the scp fails, if it isn't active, scp
works. Note that without the scrollbar, the file gets

Printing from Linux to Win98
I have a printer - an HP 1120c - connected to my wife's Win98 machine.
Occasionally I would like to print to that printer instead of the HP
Laserjet 4+ connected to my Linux machine. Could someone explain a
couple of things for me?
1. I am running Mandrake 6.0. When I start printtool, it complains that
it does not believe Samba is installed. Why and how do I fix?
2. I ignore the message and

Problems with Intel Netport Printserver and Samba
Running RH6.0 I am able to print just fine from linux, the problem now is
getting smb printing working. I am using an Intel Netport Express PRO/100
printserver. Previous to my upgrade from RH5.2 when I had the printer
directly connected to the samba server, I was able to print just fine from
the windows client machines (not using the raw method)
My /etc/printcap is as follows

LPRng question
<It seems that the print command is trying to find the printer at
location 'localhost'. Since this is a network printer it is not at
localhost is it?>
Yeah, the error messages made no sense to me either!
Well, like I said earlier: < The IP address of this printer is 10.1.1.192. I
call this
printer nero, and have it listed in my /etc/hosts file>
Here is a copy of part of my

why iriver's ifp series with limitation on ogg/vorbis support
Hi all, I buy a iriver's ifp-880 portable player, it only can
play ogg file with bitrate 96kbps-325kbps. I know that
the higher bitrate of file, the more cpu cycles to comsume in most case.
For beyond 325kbps,I guess the chip (pnx0101) can't realtimely decode.
But for ogg file below 96kbps, the cpu performance maybe isn't the bottleneck,
and I suspect because of the limitation of

Newbie questions: Load-balanced Dovecot with NFS storage
Hi,
I experimented with Dovecot a while back and our site is now taking
the plunge to switch to it from the UW IMAP server when we rejig the
topology of our mail store and IMAP servers.
Currently we have a farm of 5 IMAP servers running the UW server.
Each has locally attached disk used to store people's mailboxes.
Each user is allocated to one of these five servers and can only

Script for removing stale sessions: version for RH6.0? [Offtopic?]
Hello, people at SAMBA list.
I'm going thru the same problem that Nicholas Williams has
described in samba-list first (see references below), and I'm implementing
the solution you've decribed in the list
(SO_KEEPALIVE, etc). But I'm stuck with the script issue, as I run RedHat
Linux 6.0 which doesn't use ksh but pdksh instead. The ksh script doesn't
run in pdksh

Win9x & Samba 2.0.5a
We have a system that uses SAMBA on HPUX 10.20 systems as servers and
primarily NT4 Clients. We do however, have a few 9x boxes. We are
running with Encryption on the servers, so no modifications are made to
the registries of either types of windows boxes.
This is my problem: We were running fine on 2.0.3, but when I upgraded
the binaries to 2.0.5a, the 9x boxes could no longer see any files

Samba Version 4.1.9-Zentyal (Zentyal4.0) is using a lot of RAM memory to crash
I have been using two Zentyal 4.0 domain controllers for a long time.
3Gb of RAM each one and working okay. I have not updated them from
Internet and my users are the same. Suddently, the first DC began to
comsume memory to the top.
I detected that samba processes are the responseble of this behavior.
More processes with more memory come on. They get more and more memory
in such a way that the

ultra-cheap asterisk box
hi all
what about this...
I just put together a box on a web shop (komplett.no) that will cost me
NOK ~1850 (? 216) plus a small ?50 drive and cables, so say ?300. This
consists of a cheap MB with a duron 1400, 256MB SDRAM and two HFC-PCI
cards (if capijod will finish off the zaptel-driver soon). This is all
in a cheap PC case.
What do you think? Should this be doable? as a product? With only IP
