99.9% uptime
Sorry, forgot to change the subject on my first posting.
I was reading a comment this morning about something Microsoft had published
to the effect that there were vendors guaranteeing 99.9% uptime for NT. The
guy who wrote the reply did the math for what that means, and the results
are very interesting.
Quote below:
OK, now what does a 99.9% uptime guarantee mean? Well, it means that

display pop up message on X
Is there a method to display pop up messages on X display?
I found xmessage, however I was hoping for something a little more
flexible. like being able to tell xmessage to display a file (typically
one line in the file).
then send it a signal to tell it to re-read the file and show the new data.
Sure I can kill it and re-show it but that isnt very nice...
Is there something available in centos

Wine Setup and Config File?
I have recently added the appropriate lines to my sources.list and done an
apt-get install wine, read the included documentation, and run winesetup.
Here are the results:

Can't find xmessage
I am getting that pesky "Wine launcher is unable to find xmessage".
I asked Mandrake Expert and was told that this is included in XFree86
version 4 (which I am running). I have searched for this file and still
can't find it.
Any ideas what I can do about it? I am running mdk 8.1.

Message display
Is there a command in CentOS4 or some small program to display a short
message everywhere possible on a box much like # shutdown -k now
"Display me where I'll be seen", but without the added (normal) stuff?
xmessage would probably be usable if it had an -onalldesktops option.
BTW, the purpose is to add a visual to the scripts I have in place to

MLE, precision
Hi, everyone
I am trying to estimate 3 parameters for my survival
function. It's very complicated. The negative
loglikelihood function is:
l<- function(m1,m2,b) -sum( d*( log(m1) + log(m2)
+ log(1- exp(-(b + m2)*t)) ) + (m1/b - d)*log(m2 +
b*exp(-(b + m2)*t) ) + m1*t - m1/b*log(b+m2) )
here d and t are given, "sum" means sum over these
two vairables.

Hi,
what to do with this?
thanks in advance
[serge@rex serge]$ wine write.exe
Invoking /opt/wine/bin/wine.bin write.exe ...
For language 'fr' several language ids were found:
fr_FR - 040C; fr_BE - 080C; fr_CA - 0C0C; fr_CH - 100C; fr_LU - 140C;
Instead of using first in the list, suggest to define
your LANG environment variable like this: LANG=fr_FR

Time and space considerations in using predict.glm.
Hello,
I am using R to train a logistic regression model and save the resulting
model to disk. I am then subsequently reloading these saved objects, and
using predict.glm on them in order to make predictions about single-row data
frames that are generated in real-time from requests arriving at an HTTP
server. The following code demonstrates the sort of R calls that I have in
mind:

I think you need to enable epel-testing, that enabled it to work for me.

Newbie: Problem running FileMaker 8.5
Dear All
I'm new to Linux, and even newer to Wine. So, please excuse...
I've got a Dell D800 with both Linux and Windows installed. Linux is
Debian Etch, Windows is XP. The reason for installing Wine was that I'd
like to use FileMaker Pro 8.5 from within Linux. I've installed Wine to
the Linux world by:
sudo apt-get install wine
This worked without problems.
In the shell, I
