FW: samba woes
All,
I have been working on a component that is included with samba called SMBSH. The binary allows you to automount your NT shares by accessing your profile . I have been working on this for the last
few days and have been unsuccesful at getting it work. Now I am not much of a programmer, but I did my best to try and troubleshoot this. However it just does not want to work in Linux. I

freebsd and smbmount
Hi,
I don't know how many people on this list use samba with freebsd , but I
have a question.
I have samba set up and can connect to my other win conputers using
smbclient but I am told that freebsd does not have smbmount.
i need to mount my win hard drives in order to back them up.
Is this possible some way with samba under freebsd.
Thanks
Rick

"because you dance to disco and you don't like rock" [Win2000 vs Samba/Linux]
Hey,
so i finally got it working thanks to your list (found the right
place for EnablePlainTextPassword here, the existing 3-4 matches
in the default registry don't seem to do a thing).
It was all brilliant. I got connected to all my 4 samba servers.
I was happy... 'til the next boot (you know, during installation
of system, boots happen).
Now it connects to 3 sambas (1 on FreeBSD, 1 on

FW: smbsh problem - please help
Hi,
currently I am running Solaris 8 and I am trying to install Samba so
that I can run smbsh to access a Windows server. I do the following:
./configure --prefix=/usr/local/samba --with-smbwrapper
make
make install
All the documentation I have seen says what I am doing is correct.
Neither the configure nor any of the make commands fail. And once the
installation is complete everything else

SMBSH is really neat. After you compile and install it (./configure
--enable-smbwrapper ; make ; make install does it) you simply run it -
it'll give you a login/pw and your usual shell prompt. You then can

smbmount for Solaris
Sirs,
I hate to clutter your email with this inquiry, but I haven't been able to
get info otherwise. I want to mount shares on an Microsoft XP Pro server
on two Suns, Sparc running Solaris 2.6 and another Sparc running Solaris
8. What do I need for this?? I downloaded the Samba software from
sunfreeware.com but it seemed to just allow the XP to mount the Sun shares.
I hope you can help

Samba 2.2.0 bug.
Ill report this as a bug, since I havent had any response to my question about
it on the mailing lists.
I am trying to get at the /smb file system.
My understanding is to do this I MUST go thru the smbsh.
When I try executing smbsh, I see:
[reg@orion bin]$ smbsh
Username: rwclemens
Password:
ERROR: can't get smbw shared lock (Invalid argument)
Looking at the code its not

rookie - mount nt share from Solaris 2.6?
I believe I know the answer, but I'd like to be
certain, since I keep seeing references to things like
smbmount and smbfs...
Is it possible to mount an NT (4.0sp3) share onto a
Solaris 2.6/Sparc? I just grabbed Samba 2.0.6.
I suspect not (I don't see any smbmount or smbfs in my samba/bin
directory).
Will this ever be a possibility? If so, when?
And, are there any other options for

Wanting to run a UNIX command on Windows shared files
Hi everybody,
I posted the following on 'comp.protocols.smb' newsgroup but got no answer.
I'm now trying this way.
On one side, I have a Solaris 7 box running Samba 2.2.0 and on the other, a
W2K
machine sharing to everyone in full access mode the contents of its
C:\Public directory.
Is there a way to run a UNIX script or command on this Windows share? I

How does Linux see Windows servers?
So now that I'm looking at Linux as an alternative people tell me to use
Samba. It seems to be that Samba is so Windows can see *nix servers. I
need for my Linux desktops to access Windows servers.
What are my options?
Thanks,

access under unix
Hello,
I'm not a very experienced Samba user. Now I have the following problem:
I have implemented a document management system (with version control tool
ClearCase) running under Unix.
All the NT-users are also available under unix with the same name. The
directories containing the documents are exported via Samba.
For accessing the documents from a WEB-browser running on NT and for

Samba newbie question
I am a newbie to Samba and have read the HOWTO-SMB and README files.
Before you say RTFM, I have some very basic questions.
The goal for me is to use the NT systems local printer, CD-R and scanner devices.
The SMB documents talk a lot about the Client and Server. The source I have downloaded
will create a smbd and nmbd.
1. Do I need anything running on the NT?
2. Do I need any special options

Smbmount for Solaris 8?
I see that smbmount is for Linux only. I have a need for a Solaris 8
Sun to see a Win2k shared volume, currently as read-only. So I have a
few questions:
- Is there a read-only capability of smbmount for Solaris 8?
- Is there a Solaris 8 version of smbmount in development? Is
so, when would it be released?
- Can you name any commercial packages that offer the ability to
mount NTFS file

Locally cached files
I've just upgraded our little network here to 2.0 beta 5. The server is a
Data General Intel box running DGUX R4.20.
Compile and install went incredibly well and things have just about
working straight off.
However, we experienced a little 'funny' this afternoon.
A user was creating and deleting a postscipt file in a Unix directory.
She then used Ghostview on the PC client to

reading jpeg images?
Can someone advise me what the most sensible way is to read jpeg images?
For our work with image analysis and eye-tracking we have been using the
rimage package, on both Macs and Windows PCs. But while setting up a new
Windows machine yesterday, I see that rimage is regarded as orphaned, and no
Windows binary is available. I eventually found an old zip file for the
package, so I

Shares are comming and going
Hia,
I have a problem using the %G parameter.
At the end if my smb.conf file I have something like:
include = \etc\smb.conf.%G
At this way I hoped that according the the group, I can
load a configuration file accoring the the users group.
Instead that a 'smb.conf.it' group is loaded, a
samba tries to load 'smb.conf.nogroup'
(guest account is uid=nobody gid=nogroup)

IP address to WINS address?
Is it possible to use smbclient to look up the WINS address of a computer
given only its IP address (or DNS hostname)? I've been trying for two
days and looked through all the documentation, and the total amout of
information on doing anything useful with smbclient amount to exactly one
file - the man page, which I have read and is no help.
For example, I try to connect to a windows machine
