Can't sometimes mount smbfs
Hi! I am using smbfs to mount a NT 4.0 SP3 disk to a Linux 2.0.33 box (SuSE 5.1). This works most of the time. Sometimes, I get a syslog entry |Jun 26 23:03:10 palandt kernel: smb_dont_catch_keepalive: server->data_ready == NULL on the smbmount command, which subsequently fails "illegal parameter". What am I doing wrong? I currently can't browse the digest archives because my

scp with openssh on the server side and $PATH.
Hi! When I try to use scp from or to a machine that runs openssh-1.2pre16 on Debian Linux, I keep getting the error message "scp: command not found". Executing "ssh this-host echo \$PATH" yields "/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:" which might be set in config.h. sshd is installed to /usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/sbin, scp to /usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/bin;

Samba server rejects (Win95) request
Hi, I am new to Linux, I am using RedHat version 6.0 and Samba 2.0.5a. I try to set up a Samba Server for a LAN. So far everything (i.e. installation) worked fine, I installed samba from .rpm and nmbd, smbd is started at boot successfully. I can see the Samba server in the Windows95 network environment, but when I doubleclick on it or when I try to smbmount a service from another Linux machine I

problems logging in from 1.2.2 client to 1.2.1pre24 server
Hi! On my personal workstation, I have installed openssh 1.2.2. I have two server machines, one (A) running a self-compiled openssh 1.2.1pre24, and a different one (B) running an openssh1.2.1pre24 compiled by someone else. While I can perfectly log in to A, logging in to B fails: |mh at leona[32/532]:~$ ssh haber at b |ssh_exchange_identification: read: Success |mh at leona[33/533]:~$ So, I

Hi! This is my share: |[root] | comment = Root-Partition | path = / | guest ok = no I have a file called /etc/exim/config that is required to be owned by mail.mail, mode 664. My user account is called mh and I am member of the group mail. I'd like to edit that file via samba with an editor that is running on my desktop Windows box. Linux system crash - odd samba kernel messages
My Linux box just bit the dust in a dramatic fashion (complete lockup, needed a cold reboot). Although I am not at all sure what the cause was, the last message in the system log mentioned samba, and there are some other funny looking samba-related messages in there. I'm not asking for a diagnostic, but if anyone has seen these before, maybe they can tell me what they mean: Last message

Samba error when getting file from NT Server to Linux client
Hi, I have a small problem with Samba in Debian 2.1 (Slink), kernel 2.0.36 and samba 2.0.5. I have a NT Server and a Linux client. I want to get some files from NT Server to the Linux client. They are in the same network and the IP's are: NT Server - 222.222.222.2 Linux Client - 222.222.222.40 Reading samba docs I discover two small utilities:

different servers on different ports
Hi, I have the following unusual setup: F is a firewall host. Its external Interface has IP 172.16.20.4, and the internal Interface ist 192.168.215.1. A and B are internal hosts with IPs 192.168.215.31 and 192.168.215.71. F's port 10022 is transparently forwarded to A's port 22; F's port 20022 is transparently forwarded to B's port 22. So, connecting to 172.16.20.4:10022 gives

Net help analyzing logfiles: Printer permissions in Domain
Hi! I am trying to print from an NT machine to a simple samba printer. That NT machine is the PDC and the samba box is having logins authenticated by the NT box. When I try to access the printer with my own username, it works fine. As soon as I have the account that is destined to do the printing print, it can't log in. I have included my smb.conf file and two log excerpts - one successful,

makefile and path questions
Hi! This morning, I found a system that was still running an ancient samba. I immediately upgraded it to samba 1.9.18p1 and had the opportunity to fiddle with the make file after not doing this for a couple of months. The default makefile sorts the files like this: BINDIR (/usr/local/samba/bin) smbpasswd smbrun smbclient testparm testprns smbrun smbstatus smbpasswd

Selectively allowing port forwards
Hi! The current version of sshd allows to restrict keys to issue only specific commands. However, port forwarding can only be forbidden entirely. Given the following situation: A client C uses S as a POP3 server. We want to poll E-Mail via POP3 from S to A via an ssh tunnel without being asked for a password. Thus, we create a passphrase-less key pair on A, transmit the public key to S and

Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
A friend of mine is running Samba (samba-2.0.3-8) on a couple RedHat Linux 6.0 machines. He is sharing files bilaterally at work with a WinNT machine and at home with a Win9x machine. In both places, he is getting a large number of SMB error messages. I'm not sure whether these are from the smbfs (smbmount) or from the Windoze machines accessing the Linux drives, though I suspect the
