Remotely Wipe Hard Drive
Looks like I can't install syslinux's bootloader on an ntfs partition?
What I'd like to do is remotely setup a bootloader to wipe the hard
drive contents on old assets.
I was kind of hoping, that I could install syslinux on a remote
workstation, and then throw a dban
image and the corresponding menu and syslinux.cfg files on the remote
workstation and then reboot it
and have the

Playing flac files from external hard drive
Hi Kerry,
Thanks for the detailed information. I have seen some mp3 players that claim
to play flac, so I think that this is not a problem any longer. My disk is
formatted to FAT32 because in the past I tried to access it through some
backwards Windows system and had to make sure it could be read by it.
The only problem remains accessing the data through a USB connection,
because the disk is

Need a Centos 6 USB hard drive recovery procedure
My 15GB backup USB drive somehow got "corrupted" such that
a "chkdsk /f E:" on WinXP removed the file allocation table
(or whatever) making the NTFS drive appear empty.
I tried Windows Recuva freeware to recover the files, and
it has been working for 24 hours; but it has dumped about
65,000 files into a separate flat Windows directory.

smbfs makes other processes hang
Hi!
I have some problem with samba. The problem concerns the smbfs kernel module and smbmount. Smbfs makes other processes "hang". The only thing to do is to reboot the computer, not even "Kill -9" works.
I use a Linux system with the Redhat 7.2 distribution. It runs on a AMD 500 K6-2 processor with a memory of 192MB. The kernel is an unmodified 2.4.9-31 from Redhat. I have

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hi Felix,
I would prefer having one HDD that works with all three OSes. That
would be very convenient.
Guess exFAT is my best bet. Its supported on Linux,Win and OS X.
What do you reckon?
Best Regards
Kevin

Image (clone) of hard drive using rsync
Is it possible to make a complete image (or clone) of your hard drive (FAT
or NTFS) using rsync?
Is it possible to make incremental backups of the image (without having to
duplicate the source files)?
When restored to a new hard drive it should be bootable again and should be
an exact copy or clone of the original hard drive(i.e. the program should
firstly copy the system file information

Hard Drive size not correctly being Detected on Dell 8100
Hello,
I didn't recieve a response on freebsd-mobile, so I'm trying here.
I'm trying to install FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE or 5.0-RELEASE onto my Dell
Inspirion 8100. I'mjust doing a Standard installation and when FDisk loads I
get:
Disk name: ad0
DISK Geometry: 88 cyls/255 heads/63 sectors = 1413720 sectors (690MB)
So I go and manually change the drive geometry with the G option and

External USB Hard Drive mount problems
Hi Folks
I have a number of external USB enclosures with hard drives in. Some are IDE
and others are SATA drives. I'm running CentOS 5 + all updates. Recently when
I plug in an external drive I get the message "Invalid filesystem type. I
have install the NTFS-3G bits stuff and reformatted the hard drives with
FAT32 but still get the same error message. This started after an update

Linux backup to Windows hard drive and restore using rsync?
Hi,
I want to backup my Linux system to remote Windows hard drive.
Rsync can?t create softlink and preserve the EXT3 permission on the
windows NTFS.
My question is, in case of disaster I want to restore the whole / /var
/usr partitions. Will the following restore steps will end in viable Linux.
1) Install the same Linux OS from scratch on new clean partitions.
2) Rsync to restore the data

hard links on a samba share from a samba client
Hi,
I'm having problems creating hard links on a samba share from a samba
client.
My environment is as follows:
- PDC on a Windows NT
- samba-3.0.5 client
- samba-3.0.5 server (homes)
I use winbindd to authenticate and it is working fine, I can create,
remove and change files without any problems.
The mount command line I'm using is:
mount -t smbfs //10.101.0.231/homes /mnt -o

Linux File System w/case-insensitivity
I used to mount some files via Samba which resided on a windows
machine on a CentOS box. We moved the files to a NetApp filer, and I
was unable to mount those files using either Samba or CIFS. Most of
my problems with Samba were related to the (Windows?) password
encryption scheme that has not been included in the Samba suite.
Even if I use the mount t cifs, it didn't work.
So on the

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Dear Christian,
Thanks for your feedback.
The HDD will not accept larger than 4GB (as its in FAT format). Its a new
external HDD. Thinking of the best format(that would work with Mac , Win
and Linux) .seems like a challenge.
What's your view on NTFS? And why not exFAT?
Thanks

link-dest storage saving on backup server not on usb hard drive
I have setup rsync to backup another linux computer with the link-dest option
and realized storage savings. 1st backup is 31gb, daily backups only take
approx 4gb. But when I rsync with link-dest to usb external drive all
backups take up 31gb. Following is 1st the one that works and 2nd with no
storage savings. Any ideas? Thanks, Frank

Limiting fuse-mounted NTFS drive access?
I have a CentOS 5.5 system that is dual-boot CentOS 5.5 and Windows XP
w/SP3 formatted with NTFS (for the Windows partition, of course). I
have installed fuse (ntfs-3g) to allow read/write access to the NTFS
partition from CentOS.
No regular user has sudo.
What is the best way to limit the access a user logging into the
CentOS from mangling or changing data in unwanted areas of the

so, where to go with the 200GB of data already on the disks while
re-formatting? This is the very last option I will try! (Why: see "ftp"
below)

3TB usb drive won't mount
Hi list!
I have a 3TB usb drive with an NTFS filesystem on it, that I can't mount.:
[bent at bnlaptop ~]$ sudo /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt
Failed to read vcn 0xf28: Input/output error
Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows

How-to-rotate-plot-title
I wonder whether it is possible to rotate the title of the barplot on
the top right corner of the attached layout. It would be more readable
if the whole string were rotated by 180 degrees (mirrored).
Thank you very much.
