smbfs + wine + sourcesafe = slow
While it is amazing that Sourcesafe runs under Wine, its performance leaves a lot to be desired. I am using Sourcesafe with Wine (my setup is documented at http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html ). The Wine I'm using is from CVS as of last week. My workstation is a dual Pentium Xeon 1400MHz from Dell running 2.4.10. (That's a Pentium 4 Xeon using RDRAM, so it's probably about

Visual Sourcesafe HOWTO
I went to the trouble of setting up Visual Sourcesafe on a Linux system recently. There was a fair amount of futzing required, so I've documented what I had to do at http://www.kegel.com/linux/vss-howto.html Comments and corrections welcome. I'd also love to know how to get this working without hardcoding NT usernames and passwords! The commandline app appears to be fully functional

Quick UNC support hack?
I ran into a situation where partial UNC support would be helpful and easy. Visual Sourcesafe runs well under Wine if I map \\vssServer\vssDir to a drive letter. Unfortunately, our administrator has the line journal_file = \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt in the sourcesafe config file. This causes an error dialog box "Bad DOS filename \\vssServer\vssDir\foo.txt". If Wine handled UNC

Help. . .read socket data errors
I am using the defaults that came with the samba RPM package on Mandrake 10.1. For socket options, it has: socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 Is that something that may fix the problem if I change it? Can't connect from Windows 2000
I recently upgraded my Linux install (Debian potato to woody) and now Samba is no longer playing nice with Windows 2000. I can use smbclient on the samba machine to connect to itself, so at least that's working. The error from Windows is: "The semaphore timeout period has expired.". I deleted the smb.log file at one point in an effort to reset it. I figured it'd be created

XP Failure to Join Domain
I?m using SAMBA 3.0.4-6.3E as a PDC. I have Win98, WinNT4 and Win2000 clients successfully joined to the domain. But I can?t get an XP box to join. The XP machine can ?see? shares on the SAMBA PDC but strangely does not show up in network neighbourhood. You can find it if you search for it. The PDC is just using smbpasswd, no LDAP The machine add line in my smb.conf is as follows..... add

Can't write QuickBooks file to Samba share
On a server that has been running smoothly since it was setup, and with no changes to configurations or network or anything, users cannot save a shared QuickBooks file. they have been regularly using, updating and saving to this file for a few months. All users are able to create and update other files in the same share. I have not confirmed if they are able to create and update new QuickBooks

Samba 3 + BSD 5.4 + AD
I am having some problems getting a samba server to work with Windows 2000 Active Directory. I am at the point where I can successfully list all users and groups, using the wbinfo command, and was able to join the domain with the net join ads ... command. I can also see the computer in my network neighborhood ... however, when I click on it .. it prompts for a username / password .. and

slow slow slow
I find apps running in wine are unbearably slow. In particular - HTML-Kit by Chami. I really like this editor on NT at work, I want to use it at home on my FreeBSD box. It works in wine, just very very slowly. I do not have a windows partition. I'm running wine by itself. Any suggestions on ways to get speedier results? -- Chip

Problem with XP after upgrade from 2.2 -> 3.0
Hello All, About 2 weeks ago I upgraded from debian woody to sarge. This included an upgrade from Samba2.2 -> Samba3.0. However since the upgrade I have problems using my Samba server from my XP (home) Laptop. The symptoms are basically "explorer" freezeing on most network browseing type actions. Or if I open a file (eg a movie). I'm pretty confident that I don't have a

Workgroup Browsing Issue and wins on 3.0.6
Hi, I am having an issue browsing my work group, i have made the samba server the master browser and it wins the elections. As far as i can tell from the nmbd.logs it is also collecting hosts for the workgroup but when you try to list the workgroup this error is recorded in the messages log : nss_wins[7417]: [2004/09/14 09:54:23, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(570) nss_wins[7417]:

issues with 3.0.14a domain member after 2003 dc upgrade
Hello list, Recently I've rebuilt our Windows 2000 DCs to Windows 2003 SP1 DCs that my 3.0.14a, mit-krb5-1.3.6, openldap-2.1.30 Gentoo box is a part of. Since then, on the Samba box I can getent group, getent passwd, wbinfo -t, wbinfo -g, wbinfo -u, etc. properly but anyone who accesses the shares on the Samba member server gets prompted for a password. The logs are as follows:
