Transfering large files
Hello! I've been seeing some weird problems with transfering large files from a Samba (2.0.4a[1]) server to Windows clients. Sometimes (but not always) the Windows client will stop copying the file after a few megs and claim that the share is no longer available (it is, of course). This used to happen *a lot* with the default read/write buffer of 8k. The buffer is now 250 K, which has almost

Samba printer queues
Hello! Is it possible to make printer queues accessable from Windows clients? That is, I've got a printer that is printed on via a Linux server running Samba, but print jobs never show up on the client-side (as far as Windows is concerned, the queue is empty). It would be nice, albeight not vital, if this worked... Thanks! -- / Peter Schuller PGP userID: 0x5584BD98 or 'Peter Schuller

Actions on Samba events
On the lines of the following post, is it possible to have samba invoke a shell command along the lines of 'root preexec' etc. for most of the useful Samba events? This would allow very powerful and flexible customisation of Samba installations. The following query would then be solved by having smbclient send a message. A few events I can think of would be:- Initial log-on.

Samba and disk quotas
Hello, I've been searching the archives and, while I haven't found and answer to my question, I get the impression the answer is no, but I would like to ask you guys anyway. Is it possible to have Samba display the "out of disk space" dialog (or, alternatively, just a warning dialog) when the soft limit is broken (as opposed to the hard limit)? The reason for thsi is that I

Very strange problem with profiles
Hello, I have just had a client of ours encounter an extremely weird problem with roaming profiles. Wheather or not it's samba related I do not know, but I believe it could be. The problem is that the person in question is MOVING files from one location to another inside "My Documents" while logged in using a domain account WHILE DISCONNECTED from the network. He also changes a few

Win2K isn't supposed to work, right?
Hello, am I correct in thinking that Win2K is not "supposed" to be able to join a Samba 2.0.6 domain? I've been trying to get it to work, but all I get is "the domain doesn't exist or cannot be contacted". If so, which versions of samba does support Win2K-clients in their domain, and which one of those (if there are several) is the most stable? I realize the

customflags considered a folder?
Hello, i just switched from courier-imap to dovecot on a machine. The transition was painless except for one issue - when using the "Check mail" feature of kmail, one gets the message: "Unable to get information about folder customflags. The server replied: internal error..." So it looks like the server isn't properly hiding the .customflags file for some reason. I

Write to ext3 fs -> kjournald goes bananas
Hello, we have just observed a rather annoying behavior one of our servers. Specifically, when writing data to a file on an ext3fs filesystem at around 1.5 MB/sec, network connectivity suddently started to show signs of lag. The ping would spike up to ~1 second every 5 seconds or so. This affects the server in question and all hosts routing traffic through it (i.e., it's not a userland-only

Samba suddenly going nuts!
Hello, we're running 2.2.1a on a production server. Lately, it's been giving us troubles. Monday mordning, this moring, and 2 times more during today, samba stopped responding to all requests from Windows (2000) clients. This has happened once before a week ago, and once several weeks ago. Today it seems to be getting much worse. If left un-attended the system will eventually run out of

Logon script never runs in 2.2.7a, but does in 2.2.4
Hello, we tried upgrading from 2.2.4 to 2.2.7a in order to fix a problem. We believe it fixes it, BUT, 2.2.7a causes logon scripts to never run. That is, we have 2.2.4 installed and the logon procedure works perfectly. We then upgrade the samba/samba-common (debian) packages, and everything works *except* that logon scripts never run. What are the possible causes for such a thing? Thanks! --

Samba server identify
Hello, yesterday we re-installed a file server running samba, among other things. All of /etc was backed up, including MACHINE.SID and secrets.tld. However no matter what we did the Win2K clients just would not 'get' that it's the same server! As a result it goes nuts trying to use the profile. We are not working on manually re-initializing everyone's profile and selectively

Strange delays/hangs/freezes with samba
Hello, our file server was rebooted due to an extended power outage a week or so ago. Ever since then, we have had a problem with clients "freezing" or hanging when accessing the Samba server. It sometimes happens when loggin in, at the beginning of the login script. The script will stall; explorer will hang (not even the task manager can be brought to the front). At that point all you

Solved: Login script doesn't run
Hello, I just thought I'd post the reason why we were having trouble getting the login script to run when upgrading from 2.2.4 to 2.2.7a (and 2.999). It turns out the location of secrets.tdb changed somewhere around 2.2.5. When I copied the up-to-date version of secrets.tdb to /var/lib/samba (from /etc/samba), the login script ran. (If someone knows what's stored in secrets.tdb that

rsyncing very large files - extremely slow at end
Hello, I am trying to rsync a tree containing very large files. The first one encountered is a file that is 127 GB on the remote (authorative) end and around 80 GB on the receiving end. rsync version is 2.6.2, patched to fix the bug mentioned at: https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1529 But even so transfer is extremely slow towards the end. It will sync approximately (or exactly,

Dangers of oplock break wait time
Hello, the man page is quite explicit about not fiddling with the oplock break wait time parameter unless one has understood the oplock code. Is there an explanation for this that doesn't require one to be fully read up on the SMB/CIFS protcols? :) What form of errors are we talking about? Race conditions? How dangerous is it? The thing is that we're having a lot of trouble related to

"vorbiscomment"
Hello, I'd like to use abcde to rip my CD:s to Ogg Vorbis format - but abcde wants a "vorbiscomment" in my PATH. I assume it's a tool for inserting meta-data into Ogg Vorbis files, but where do I get it? The vorbis-tools package doesn't seem to contain it. "valid userse = @anyGroup" breaks samba
Hello, first of all, thanks to everyone who has responded to my questions lately. All pointers are as always much appreciated. That said, I have now narrowed down (and solved, sort of) the problem with the mysterious "freeze effect"[1] I've been posting about. To put it in short terms: X = original smb.conf that's worked fine for a long time up until a power outtage efter

Matroska as an alternative to Ogg (container)
http://www.matroska.org/ I just found out about this and I think it looks like a great idea. I figured some on this list would be interested. Also, speaking now without having reviewed matroska in detail, nor being involved in Ogg/Vorbis: Perhaps it would be a viable alternative for the Ogg format for Theora if nothing else. I read about the .ogg format a while back, and while I have no

Which .tdb files are safe to remove?
Hello, which .tdb files in /var/lib/samba are safe to remove (rebuilt automatically)? Long story: I have posted a couple of times lately regarding some mysterious freeze effects we've been having on the clients. We have now tried 2.2.4, 2.2.7a (this one makes it even worse) and 2.999 (3.0 pre-X) and have the same trouble on all. It seems the same configuration does NOT cause this
