Cannot see the samba server in Network Neighbourhood
Hi I am a newbie to samba after taking over from a previous administrator. I have upgraded to the version that ships with SuSE linux 8.0 and copied over the old smb.config and smbpasswd files. I can see the shares from a remote SWAT connection and also using the interactive method via a DOS window, but cannot get the shares to be seen via Network Neighbourhood. I am thinking that this may be

Help with archive bit request
Hello, I am trying to get the archive bit to behave under Samba 2.2.2 on a Linux box (Slackware 8.0) serving NT and Win2K clients. I have "map archive = yes" and "dos filemode = yes". If I have "force create mode = 0100", creating new files sets the archive bit (good) and "attrib +a filename" will turn on the archive bit if it was off (good) but

Which tree should I be barking up?
Running Samba 2.2.6 on RedHat 7.2 in a Microsoft NT4 Domain, trying to create or copy a text file to a share from a MS Windows 2000 Professional workstation (client2k) gives 'Access denied' Reading the log file (level 3) for samba.client2k (not an activity I feel much comfort in doing correctly) it looks like I am being recognized as a 'guest user' which is a problem but for

Memory leak in winbindd
I'm running Samba 2.2.3a on NetBSD. I've been having an annoying problem with winbindd dying inexplicably. I finally found a test that seems to (eventually) kill it: while wbinfo -t > /dev/null; do /usr/bin/true; done The problem is a memory leak in winbindd. Actually, wbinfo -t will still work, but wbinfo -u doesn't (response.extra_data is always null). Is this a known

winbind - getent passwd
I can't find the thread but someone last week was having trouble with 'getent passwd' not returning the Windows domain users as well as the local users. 'wbinfo -u' worked but not 'getent passwd'. I just finished a new server and had the same problem. Turns out I overlooked the the symbolic links in /lib. The file libnss_winbind.so needs to have a link to

Samba in a Win2000 / NT Enterprise
Hello, I am currently integrating 20 workstations and 5 Servers (all Dell Products) running Red Hat 7.2 (2.4.7-10) into a Windows 2000 / NT Enterprise network of about 2,000 users. I have been using a Samba server (version 2.2.1) with "security=domain" so that any user with a W2K domain logon can access the Samba file server. However, I want to move into full integration and set up all

Windows changes file ownership & ACL's - any solution ?
I thought I had read a response to this. Went something like this: Word (and lots of others such apps) do not actually deal with the original file. They create a temporary file which overwrites the original when you save the new document. The 'new' file of course inherits the new editor's ownership. Hope this helps you. Network Magazine 04/04/04 Article pg 19 (Free IP Telephony PBXs?)
* Brethren, It's a sad day in our community. Please join me in a moment of silence for the death of responsible journalism. Silence.....................good enough. This article goes on to tell about Pingtel's announcement of forming the "first open source community aimed at creating SIP based servers".

winbind problem with existing linux user accounts. (S amba 2.2.3a)
Thank you for your reply. Below are the entries for winbind I have in my smb.conf. Do you see any problems with them? # separate domain and username with '+', like DOMAIN+username winbind separator = + # use uids from 10000 to 20000 for domain users winbind uid = 10000-20000 # user gids from 10000 to 20000 for domain groups winbind gid = 10000-20000 # allow enumeration of winbind users

rimage doesn't install on Mac OS X 10.4
Hi, I'm trying to install rimage on a Mac OS X 10.4 machine. I followed the advice in previous R-help threads and got over the hurdles of having the header files in the right places, among other things. But I can't figure out what to do with this error. ice.pnl.gov:/home/waichler<949>system_profiler -detailLevel mini SPSoftwareDataType Software: System Software Overview:

Small Files/Load Average Information
Hi, I have been noticing some serious load averages occurring when users are browsing or using directories with a large number of files. A case in point is our Sage users. Sage is a nasty program and spits out three small files into a spool directory every time something is printed and does not clear them out. This means that the spool directories rapidly fill with tiny files and by the end of

MS Access and RAID
Hi, We have been having a few problems with a M$ Access DB held on a Samba server Samba version: samba-2.2.4-2N1 We have rebuilt a new server, and transferred the database over to the new box, along with word/excel docs etc. Everything is working fine, except the access database, which is running very very slowly (can be over a minute to open a record). Details are a little sketchy, but it

Performance Increase Suggestions
Hello Everyone, I have a few users that are complaining about the "slowness" of copying files to and saving files directly to the Samba server. From my own recollections, the speed is rather identical to the speed we experienced on our old Windows NT 4.0 fileserver. One thing that could be the impetus of this issue is that Samba is serving up files, for opening and copying from the

Winbind memory leak
Hi, I have been quite surprised at the largeness of the winbind memory leak. I have an awk script which checks this every n-minutes and sends me an alert when it exceeds a specified threshold. See below for some sample data. This is RH6.2 with Samba 2.2.2 and about 25 users. What I was wondering is whether there is any issues with killing and restarting winbind whilst samba is running at full
