smbtar question?
Hi all,
I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network
Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest
way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then
use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use
gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar?
I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around

Using Amanda + Samba to backup NT4 servers?
Hi all,
Has anyone used amanda in combination with samba to back up an NT4 server
system?
I'm able to connect to the server with both smbclient and smbtar on the
command line, but I can't get amanda to connect. Supposedly amanda uses
smbclient and smbtar to perform the backups.
I'm continually getting the following error from amcheck:
ERROR: amanda: [PC SHARE //servername/share

Where are the older versions?
Hi,
Anyone know where I can get a .tar.gz of 2.0.2? I'd like this version,
since the PDC code is reportedly more stable than 2.0.3. Or has this
been fixed in 2.0.3?
Thanks,

Network Neighborhood comment fields and Samba
Hi all,
I'm using Samba 1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.5.1. Within my smb.conf file
I am using the 'netbios aliases' option to make my server appear as 4
different servers with an smb.conf.%L to load the specifics of each:
netbios aliases = hardware software diagnostics homedirs
include = /usr/local/samba/var/smb.conf.%L
The problem I'm encountering is that the only comment I see

Samba across subnets?
Hi all,
I've recently set up a samba server, but just discovered that people
on the "other" side can't reach it. The system shows up in Network
Neighborhood, but you can't double click on it. It returns a message saying
that the server is either inaccessible, or that I misspelled the name
(How I did that with just one mouse click is beyond me ;)
I had 'allow

Samba servers disappeared?!
Hi all,
I've been running a Samba server here for over 6 months now will great success.
This past weekend I moved the Samba server to a new subnet, and now I can't
see any of the various aliases from Samba server.
I was previously able to see the aliases in NN across my 2 different subnets
by using the 'wins server = ' parameter. The wins server I was registering
with is on yet

No INSTALL file?
Hi all,
Is there no INSTALL file that ships with samba? I thought there was one there
at one time.
Is the install procedure as simple as:
./configure [possible various options]
make
make install
Or is there more to it than that?
Thanks,

AW: Samba across subnets?
If you don't want to type the ip adress of your samba server every time you
connect, add a entry to your local hosts file and lmhosts file.
You will find this files (and sample files with extension ".sam") in the
windows main directory of Win95 and under "system32/drivers/etc" on WinNT
4.0.

Does smbtar have a size limit ?
Hello. I'm trying to use smbtar/smbclient (2.0.3) to copy
an NTFS share on an NT Server, onto a Solaris 2.5 system.
The NTFS partition is 10Gb. At the 2Gb mark, the tar stops.
No errors, the file just stops. The process (smbtar) returns.
Is this a problem with Solaris 2.5 ? I believe it is, and if
I upgrade to 2.6, I can create larger tar files. However, does
anyone know if

NT Domain and Samba as a PDC
Hi all,
I'm currently battling with my Corp. IS group over NT domain administration.
I admin a mostly Unix environment with a lot of WinXX clients. The
authentication server is owned by "Corporate" (you know, that nameless,
faceless entity that always makes do stupid things because
"That's the policy" :) and I have no control over it.

gtar compression achieved
Hey folks,
I looked at the man page and don't see any way to do this - maybe it is a
function of the compression program used I dunno.
Is there any way to get gtar to report on the compression it achieved?
I can't just check file sizes because I'm writing data to tape.
The basic problem is that I know how much data is there to begin with but I
don't know how much room it took

Dual Authentication methods?
Hi all,
I have an interesting situation where I have 2 groups of users, a Unix group,
and a Windows group. I want to be able to allow them all access to the
same resources, but not comlicate my life too much more than it already is :)
Here's the situation. I have a Samba server currently running in order to
allow the Unix folks access to their home directories from their PCs. This

W95 and encrypted passwords?
Hi all,
I'm trying to play with the "not-yet-officially-supported-PDC-code" in
samba-2.0.3 and running into problems with the W95 client I'm using for
testing. Since the Samba server is using 'encrypted passwords=yes' my W95
system can't log in, since it's passing plain-text passwords.
How do I *enable* encrypted passwords under W95? Is there a quick

smbtar/smbclient recovery problem
I am having trouble using tar (or gtar) to recover files built using smbtar
and smbclient (v2.0.4b). The files are loaded on an exabtye tape - the
script runs on a Sun/Solaris-7 box and the files being tar'd are on an NT
box (v4sp5). There are no error messages when the tape is built, but when
I try to read it tar will just stop about 1/3 of the way in (total size is
about 850MB). After

smbtar -v -s planpc4 -x backup -t /dev/rmt/1c -p password
How do I get some files on this drive back??
I've tried smbtar -v -r planpc4 -t /dev/rmt/1c -x backup
but I get "No server or no service specified - abort."
What am I doing wrong??
