DOS to UNIX Conversion
On 17 May 99, Axel Neumann <amn@cromemco.com> had questions about
DOS to UNIX Conversion:
> It seems that a lot of people hate Windoze in such a way that they only

Maybe that's because the M$ "solutions" are crap, and much better
alternatives already exist.

"because you dance to disco and you don't like rock" [Win2000 vs Samba/Linux]
Hey,
so i finally got it working thanks to your list (found the right
place for EnablePlainTextPassword here, the existing 3-4 matches
in the default registry don't seem to do a thing).
It was all brilliant. I got connected to all my 4 samba servers.
I was happy... 'til the next boot (you know, during installation
of system, boots happen).
Now it connects to 3 sambas (1 on FreeBSD, 1 on

Can only see 1 SMB Server
I'm trying to run 2 SMB servers on my intranet (which also has a Win98
client). Both are accessable if I explicitly link to them. (ie: "NET
USE" commands work just fine), but neither apear on a browse list if
both of them are running. If only 1 is running, it appears just fine.
I've mucked around with the "domain master" & "local master"
parameters,

Win 9x and WinNT Clients connecting to Samba-Server
Hello,
I know I should get rid of the problem by my own, but unfortunally I failed.
So I ask:
I`ve a subnet of win9x and WinNT clients connecting to our Linux file
server (no more servers in this subnet)
via samba 2.02. All win95 can see and mount services of the Samba server.
But win98 and WinNT can only see the server but can not connect to a service.
I`ve no encryption and security= user in

Carriage Returns in files after copying
I apologize in advance if I'm wasting bandwidth with a simple question, but
I was unable to find a solution for this problem in the documentation...
I've got a set of shares set up on a SUN Enterprise 5500 using Samba 2.0.4.
In Windows NT, I map a drive to the share. When I copy a text file from
Windows NT to the SUN, editing the file in UNIX shows that ^M has been added

Win95 won't work with Samba 2.0.2
Hmmm... I've sent a couple of questions to the list recently, with
no responses. Are my messages getting out?
Since upgrading to 2.0.2, our Win95 boxes are having problems
accessing shares. WinNT works perfectly. Win95 worked fine
with 1.whatever, but now it can only see files that are actually in
the share directory. It can see subdirectories of the share, but
they appear as empty

Sharing in another network
Hi,
I'm trying to share a machine that's on the other side of a gateway.
The machine being shared is a Linux (kernel 2.2.1 (RedHat 5.2) and samba
2.0.3), and the box trying to access it is NT4.0 with SP5.
It looks something like this
------- --------- ------
|Linux|-----------|Gateway|----------| NT |

Error Messages on Terminal
I am using Samba for print serving on a home network that consists of
one Win98 machine and one running Red Hat 6. I am getting along well
but have come up against a problem I don't know how to solve.
On the linux machine where samba is running, when I am in a text based
terminal (doesn't show in KDE) I get various nmbd messages scrolling
across my screen, messages that look like nmbd

Does mksmbpasswd.sh have any real purpose?
I see that mksmbpasswd.sh (plus a little editing) would
be a good way to set up users with "NO PASSWORD"
in bulk.
But suppose I don't want the risk of the "NO PASSWORD"
approach. Now somebody with root access must run
smbpasswd for each user they want to activate. But can't
I just do this anyway (with the -a 'add user' option), without
ever having run

Configuring samba server and Win95 client
Hi,
I think this is a very simple situation but I need help in this matter asap.
I have a linux m/c running samba-2.0.2. This is on a n/w controlled by a Win
NT PDS. But I don't want Win NT to do the login authentication. So i've
configured samba to act as a file server doing the login checking but i've
not included it in the NT domain. Is this correct? And if so how do I
configure my

security = server & encrypted passwords
Folks,
I've missed the latest encrypted passwords thread, so forgive me if
this is old hat for some of you.
I'm running 2.0.3 with auth being handled by an NT PDC. It seems that
some Win95 clients (namely those with later releases of the OS) have
problems authenticating. I've got encrypt passwords = yes but it
still seems only the old Win95 clients (clear text passwords) can
auth

Back up using the win machines backup programme
If not any other suggestions?

HP Deskjet 1000c
Howdy all -
I have Samba 2.0.3 running like a champ on a dual PPro 200, 128 MB RAM,
running Slackware 3.6, kernel 2.2.5. Running like a champ as far as file
sharing is concerned, that is.
I have an HP Deskjet 1000c hanging off the parallel port. I set up a raw
printer in /etc/printcap, the line looks like this:
dj1000|DeskJet 1000c:sh:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj1000

Possibly a security flaw...
A summary of my problem,
I had wrong UIDs for a user (eg pmal) between the /etc/passwd file and the
smbpasswd file.
When I was trying to loggin from a couple of machines running either win nt
or win 98 I was reading in the log files that the loggin could not be
completed because the UID were wrong but there were instances were I could
loggin from another computer with the same username.
I really

SMBFS stack overflow?
Sorry about the previous message...
Note that the maintainer listed in MAINTAINERS is no longer active, so
perhaps it should be updated?
I've found a problem with SMBFS and *really* long pathnames. It causes
the kernel to OOPS, and sometimes corrupts the kernel stack. I've even had
it corrupt the SLAB allocator so bad that no binary could be run :)

Passwords and NT
I have searched the archives and the internet and found nothing on this
topic but I know it's a known issue. Second I would like to say this has
nothing to do with NTDOM.
I am running a samba server 2.0.0 on a freebsd box. I am connecting to the
server using windows 9x and NT clients. I have hacked the windows
registries to enable clear text passwords across the lan. The problem is

Can't re-add NT box to domain
While I wait for an answer to my last question, allow me to ask another.
When we upgraded a samba server from 2.x to 3.0.0-2mdk using LDAP, we managed
to change the domain SID. Instead of fixing the SIDs on the sever, I re-added
the hosts to the domain. Although it was a lot of work, it was successful on
most of the systems on the network. However, we have one old NT4 box on the
network

Performance Problems with Samba 2.0.3
Hello all,
Since 2 or 3 days I have some performance problems when copying files
from/to my Samba server.
Copying is very slow, about 10x more than normal, and the CPU usage is
almost 100% during the file copy.
Everything else works fine (NFS, FTP ...).
This server has been running for several weeks now, and never had any
problems.
Any clues what could cause this ?
Thanks
Marco Schwarz.
