smbmount on NT machine times-out
I've got seven Linux boxes, and three NT boxes, all that have to be mounted via smbmount for a backup that we run through one of the Linux machines ("SPEEDY") via BRU. While Speedy has no problem keeping the mounts for all the Linux machines, the mounts for NT machines will timeout after a short period. I run a "df" and get an Input/Output error on all the NT machines. I

smbfs directory cache broken in 2.2 kernels?
Using RHL 6.0 (2.2.5 kernel) with Win95 systems, smbfs doesn't recognize (immediately) changes made on the remote the remote system by a user on the remote computer. After a share has been mounted, if some computer other than the computer using smbfs to mount the share adds/removes a file to a directory in the share, an 'ls' of the mounted directory doesn't show the new/removed

backing up comments
All this talk about vorbis comments has made me think. Would it be possible to create backups of the Vorbis comments for my vorbis collection (currently about 1850 files) ? Instead of having to make sure I enter the correct details into CDex (saving in to cdplayer.ini & backing up that), or if I have comments in the Vorbis files that aren't stored in cdplayer.ini, such as the tags

securing a remotely hosted machine
Hi, I'm looking to put together a doc for the wiki.c.o on howto secure a remotely hosted machine. Its a situation that many of us find ourselves in, wherein we either lease or colo a server ( or many ) and there is always the issue of remote hands, other facility users etc being able to get physical access of the machines. So what are the usual steps that people take in order to secure

BA.plot with logarithmic axes (MethComp)
Dear R-helpers, I am trying to plot a Bland-Altman-Plot using the BA.plot function from the package MethComp. While there is a function to transform the values for analysis as shown in the snippet below, I would like to have logarithmic axes for display as well. The usual log = 'xy' does not work because of the properties of the y-asxis (positive and negative values). I am sure that

NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate and smbmounted Win shares
Setting this dword to 1 in HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Control/FileSystem is supposed to suppress updates of a file's Access Time attribute when browsing but even read-only accesses with NotePad or plain copy leave no traces. However, if you cp or cat (or for that matter tar) a file on an smbmounted Win share, the Access Time is updated regardless of the setting of NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate.

NT Backups
Given that rsync, smbclient and smbmount are all kissin' cousins, this seems like a good place to post this question. I'm building a linux backup server which will be archiving other linux and some NT servers. The Linux boxes are being rsynced over ssh, so everything is happy there. The NT servers were initially going to be smbmounted and rsynced, but this ended up hanging about 30%

2.0.6: HUP/charset/profiles/smbmount/logging
This is the list of problems I had with samba-2.0.6 so far. Can anyone tell me if he can reproduce them and if he considers them as problems? 2.0.6 on linux 2.2.13 or 2.0.33 1) sighup/log reopening doesn't always work: connections that are already active keep logging to the old logs; logrotate rotates/zip the logs and samba stops logging completely till restart. 2) Localized chars. Tape operation
Hi all, My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore a backup, we can choose what date available in that
