Umlaute and Sharing with both SAMBA and Helios Ethershare.
Hi all
I have samba 1.9.18 and 2.0.2 shares which are also shared to the
macintosh world with Helios ethershare running under Solaris 2.5.1 and
2.6. I can create files and directories with the German special
characters "umlaute" and "sz" with either client. My problem is that the
macintoshes can't access directories created from the PCs whose name
contains special

CANNOT BROWSE (the solution)
Hi all.
I?m using the binary distribution of SAMBA 1.9.16 on SCO3.2v4.2.
Last weekend we got a new server. Installed all applications and all
worked fine (as expected) ...
but:
the win/nt clients could map the shares, but they could not browse the
SAMBA-box!
I checked the "browseable=" options, but everything looked ok.
Increasing the debug level and stepping through the logfiles

Connot create/select subdirs
Hello all,
I have a RedHat 5.1 system running SAMBA and the machines and users log
on properly but no one can select, create, delete or do anything with
subdirectories.
I checked the logs and it seems that the share names are not being
'made' properly.
Is there a setting or problem with 5.1 install that I need to change???
Thanks

WIN 98 - Plain passwd?
i'm looking for an answer to the problem WIN98/samba-connection. It
shows the same failure as shown by WinNT unless the change of Registry
to EnablePlainPasswd. Is there an answer where the entry
"EnablePlainPasswd" should be by WIN98? Enable encryoptedPasswd in
smb.conf brought no solution.
Thanks an many greetings

Samba Log Analysis.
I have searched the web for scripts to analyze Samba logs and found
nada. Has anyone written a tool that will produce something on the
order of what Webalyzer or Analog produce? I would love to see what
applications we use eat up the most resources without actually having
to use my brain. I know I could whip one up myself, but that requires
me to use my brain, etc... I'm not much of a

two questions: mailing list & public shares
Morning...
First off, is there a non-digest version of this list available?
Second, and more important, from reading the docs, the following
'share' should not prompt me for a password...no?
# This one is useful for people to share files
[tmp]
comment = Temporary file space
path = /tmp
read only = no
public = yes
If this is correct, then there is a problem here, since I

EOL conversion??
Hi,
I've checked all the docs I can find and this top icisn't mentioned,
so I'm guessing there is no such thing, but I have users who swear
that VisionFS used to automatically convert unix text files to
windows text files (change the EOL to have both a carriage return
and a newline, instead of just a newline). I think the user is
mistaken, but just wanted to check. Is there a way

WIN 98 password problem
Hi!
I'm new on the list, so please, be patient with me!
I have a problem for wich I can't find the answer in the FAQ. Until
recently I was running a 16 PC-s network with SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 and
Samba 1.9.16p11 on the server and mixed clients (Win 3.11 to Win 95
OSR2). The users on the network have access to a PUBLIC directory on
they own user directories on the server without

share modes
Hello all,
I used to have
share modes = no
on all my application shares as they were accessed for read-only. I
particularly put this on my netlogon share after someone got an exclusive
lock on part of the login script! I find with 2.2.2 that share modes is no
longer allowed and I get smbstatus lock entries for loads of application
stuff which people should be locking. What is the 2.2.2

update encypted and LDAP
Hello all,
I'm currently trying out samba-3.0alpha24 and moving to samba-3.0.0beta1
since we're getting into XP and encrypted passwords etc. I was hoping to
set everyone (about 13,000 users) up on an LDAP (openLDAP) server with
just the Unix crypt passwords for now and run with
encrypt passwords = no
update encrypted = yes
for a while to populate the NT/LM password hashes before

Client on dos
I need to use a samba server (linux redhat 6.0 ) from a diskless dos
machine ( has a floppy drive for booting) . So i need a very little
tcp-ip stack for dos and a client for a NT server on dos so that they
will be small enough to be on a 1.44 system floppy.
Is that possible ?

WINS problem discovered and fixed!! browsing speedup of 20X for large networks
Ok, after several months of pulling my hair out I finally fixed WINS and
browsing at out Univesity. It ended up being an acutal bug, er bad code
segment. To explain we have a large number of clients ~1000+ at any one
time over 6 subnets. Browsing was spuratic at best. nmbd sucked up %70
of the proccessing power of a sparc 5. Well after serious investigation
I traced it down to two lines of

Drive namings...
Just wondering if there is a way to get drive namings to change according
to who's logged into the network.
ie.
'bob' logs into windows networking and gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
Now if 'sue' logs into windows networking on the same pc she gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
But E: contains sue's stuff. So is there a way into making 'sue'

Missing inet.h and netdb.h for SCO
I tried to compile Samba 2.0 beta with cc under SCO 3.2. I seem to be
missing the inet.h and netdb.h include files. Does anyone know if they are
publicly available?

SOLARIS_2.6: request_oplock_break
I saw a little discussion about this a few weeks ago but nothing concrete.
We're running samba-1.9.18p8 under Solaris 2.6x86. I am periodically
getting the following in the logfiles, usually _many_ at a time:

break request to pid 5411 on port 40884 for dev = 1980040, inode = 33c4d

Install problems with RedHat 7.0 RPM for 2.2.0
I just went through upgrading from 2.0.7 on Redhat 7.0 using the binary RPM
provided by samba.org and noticed a problem with the swat install.
It seems that the swat binary in the RPM is built to look for it's
supporting files in /usr/share/samba/swat whereas the RPM installs said
files in /usr/share/swat. This results in the following error message when
you try to access swat:

How to install network apps?
I'm trying to figure out an
intelligent way to install
apps on the network server,
and be able to install once
and have all the clients use
this. However, it seems
like most installations modify
the registry and seem to
demand a client-by-client installation.
Am I missing something on this?
Can someone provide me some hints
or references to help this?

smbtar question?
Hi all,
I want to move a filesystem off of my NT server over to my Network
Appliance NFS server to then be shared via Samba. I assume the easiest
way to accomplish this would be to use smbtar. Do I then
use smbtar to extract the tar file I create with smbtar, or, can I use
gnutar? Does it matter? Am I safer sticking with smbtar?
I'm guessing that since smbtar is a wrapper around
