smbmount doesn't work
Hi,
Thanks for answering my question on the new smbmount not working. I tried
all variety of combinations on the commands you suggested, but they all
simply do this:
% smbmount -c //server/share 'mount /mnt/samba-share -n CLIENT -U user'
Usage: smbmount service <password> [-p port] [-d debuglevel] [-l log]
Version 2.0.3
-p port connect to the specified port

Installation Help, Please !!!
I have been having some difficulty with the installation of samba V2.0.3 on an ultraSparc 3000 server. I was able to get it built, I have configured, defined an smb.conf file, created an smbpasswd file, and I still get errors when I work through the Diagnosing Samba checklist. BTW, I have checked the conf file using testparms and corrected the problem mentioned there! I am using the newest source

Compiling RPMS for 7.3 from CVS source
Hi all,
To start I am still very new to samba and this is my first attempt to
build RPMS from the CVS source. I am trying to use the script you have
in /packaging/Redhat.
I keep getting an error that samba-PVERSION cant be found, see below:
[root@LSALNXS01 RedHat]# pwd
/usr/src/samba/packaging/RedHat
[root@LSALNXS01 RedHat]# sh makerpms.sh
chown: getting attributes of `samba-PVERSION': No

WARNING: Break-in attempts
Greetings all,
I''m forwarding a copy of an email I sent reporting attempted
break-ins on my main server, earth.terran.org. I am forwarding this
because I think it is relevant that folks watch for this kind of activity
in their logs to catch people who "try doorknobs" in the middle of the
night. After sending this email, I sent a talk request to the user, who

Samba 2.0 beta 4 on Linux (RedHat 5.2)
Fellow samba users,
I had some problems with trying to get samba running properly on
Linux (RedHat 5.2), but now I've got it working.
Two things I learned:
1) Use the packaging/RedHat/makerpms.sh script. It will generate a
RedHat compatible rpm for you. I had to make these changes to it
though:

Sobel's test for mediation and lme4/nlme
Hello,
Any advice or pointers for implementing Sobel's test for mediation in
2-level model setting? For fitting the hierarchical models, I am using
"lme4" but could also revert to "nlme" since it is a relatively simple
varying intercept model and they yield identical estimates. I apologize for
this is an R question with an embedded statistical question.

Looking for C8 AMD help
I'm migrating from C7 to C8.? I'm currently using autofs, but alas
autofs has been dropped in C8 for the AMD automounter.
I have some very ancient knowledge of AMD, I used it when it was first
introduced many years ago on Solaris and moved to Sun's automounter when
it was introduced.
So now it's back to square one.
I used automount2amd to convert one of my existing maps,

The rsync daemon as a gateway service?
In rsyncd.conf I'd like to be able to specify something like:
[module1]
gateway 10.168.172.9
or (I think we have to change the protocol a little for this one):
[module2]
redirect datasource.my.domain
I've run into this need a few times, and I think it might be useful
enough to add (both of these) to the daemon configuration. I'm asking
the list to see if either of these might

Another Tar stopper
Well, I have been busy getting child #4 off on her way to college
(joining #2). So now it is quite with just the 2 youngest and I can get
work done again!.
tar stops as follows:
/root/.nautilus/metafiles/x-nautilus-desktop:%2F%2F52F.xml
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.
I thought perhaps this is some file locked becuase I was running from a
terminal session in gnome.
So I

Tar Compression issue
I have a file Server CentOS 5.10, its on the internet, so I compress all csv
into one file using (tar -czvf compressed_files.tar.gz *.csv) on this
server so that I can download them as one compressed file to save bandwidth,
Disk space on this server available is 50Gig, so when I copy the files onto
Redhat EL 5.9 and decompress them using (tar -zxvf *.gz) It decompresses
maybe 80% then get error:

Getting a list of users in a group - how?
Hi all,
Hopefully this is a simple one - I'm trying to work out how to get a
list of users in a certain group. If I have the following set up in
Active Directory:
Group1
- UserA
- UserB
Group2
- UserC
- UserD
AllGroups
- Group1
- Group2
- UserX
Then I want to be able to say "List all users in the AllGroups group"
and I should get UserA,B,C,D and UserX

Failed logins
I've had several problems like this, and I posted about it earlier -
please, if anyone has any ideas, let me know. If you need more info, let
me know. I'm not sure what to give or how much detail to go into...
Here's our setup:
We have some people using NT boxes to access our SGI fileserver. It's an
Origin 200, running IRIX 6.4, and Samba 2.0.3. What will happen is

Multiple (minor) problems
I spent around an hour yesterday hunting through the archives looking for
answers to these problems - if they were there and I just didn't find
them, I'm apologizing in advance.
Anyway... I recently upgraded our Irix 6.4 (Origin 200) server from
1.9.18p8 to 2.0.3. Since then we've noticed several strange problems and
I can't figure out how to fix them.
First off, here's our

DR Server for Windows Machines
I need to setup a CentOS box offsite to have a series of files replicated to it.
My problem is this machine won't have Samba on it but I need to replicate the
hierarchy in question in such a manner that I can restore from it and retain
file system permissions.
That's where I am stumped, anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,

sudden loss of password validation
The problem: Strangely, the PDC rejects user password challenges from Samba.
The user account gets locked. After unlocking the account, everything is
back to normal. This happens several times a day to different users and from
different Samba servers. All Samba servers have the same [global]
configuration.
Is this a Samba problem? Is samba perhaps not passing along the correct
password? If I add

Can't smbmount with samba-2.0
Hello,
I have a script on a production system at work that mounts an NT-exported
share for NFS re-export to some NFS-only clients. The system was RedHat-4
and samba 1.9, and used the following style command line (names have been
changed to protect the innocent :-)
smbmount //host/share /mnt/point -c HOST -U user -P passwd \
-u nobody -g nobody -f 666 -d 777
Now the system has been upgraded to
