Samba for VMS
I just installed Samba for VMS (1.9.17p4) on a DecServer 1000A running VMS
7.1
The University Network is primarily NT Server 4.0 SP5. My experience is
with Netware and NT, not with VMS, but I have the luck of supporting the
system.....
My main question is about Encrypted Passwords.....Does this release of Samba
support them, or do I have to modify the clients who want access to our

SMBFS stack overflow?
Sorry about the previous message...
Note that the maintainer listed in MAINTAINERS is no longer active, so
perhaps it should be updated?
I've found a problem with SMBFS and *really* long pathnames. It causes
the kernel to OOPS, and sometimes corrupts the kernel stack. I've even had
it corrupt the SLAB allocator so bad that no binary could be run :)

Rob,

Performance Problems with Samba 2.0.3
Hello all,
Since 2 or 3 days I have some performance problems when copying files
from/to my Samba server.
Copying is very slow, about 10x more than normal, and the CPU usage is
almost 100% during the file copy.
Everything else works fine (NFS, FTP ...).
This server has been running for several weeks now, and never had any
problems.
Any clues what could cause this ?
Thanks
Marco Schwarz.

oplock_break: MS kb articles
I found these articles that talk about the oplock_break problem (specifically
they are related to problems with word97):
http://support.microsoft.com/support/ntserver/serviceware/nts40/e9msge2bc.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q163/5/25.asp
Basically they say:
either apply sp3 on the winnt client or disable oplock on nt server
But they don't say anything about win9x,

I am relatively new to the samba-suite. We are useing samba for file-Service
and printer-service since a while the files residing on Digital-UNIX (DUNIX)
and QNX and also the printers. works fine and very stable.
Due to a reconfiguration I am looking for connecting the printer (HP-LJ4M) to
a WinNT-WS client. and if I try to print out of DUNIX via smbclient
this WS tells me something about

Setting up SMB Server
In the docs there is a reference to a nonexistent section, 1.4.x, which
is supposed to have information for setting up shares. I cannot find
this section in any of the FAQ's I have, and would like some help.
I am able to access other SMB servers (Win98), but unable to allow them
to access me.
The computer is listed on the other computers, but I cannot make them
browse. I have set up a guest

query WINS for all registered machines in an workgroup or domain
Hi,
I searched the documentation and the web but cannot find a way to query
a wins server for all registered machines in an workgroup or domain.
If I want to ask the wins with nmblookup, I have to specify a single
name to lookup, wildcards are not allowed.
If using the broadcast facility I can search with wildcards:
nmblookup '*' -B 192.168.0.255
querying * on 192.168.0.255
192.168.0.7

Regarding Samba issue
I am experiencing a problem with all time stamps having the same date
and time stamp. I found this bug report
http://us1.samba.org/listproc/samba/June1998/0239.html
and see there is a fix. The question I have is has this issue been
resolved in later versions of Samba code. It would be easier to upgrade
than deal with a code change and re compilation.

WINS server (nmbd) puzzle
My client Windows XP boxes are failing to register with my WINS server
(running nmbd from Samba). I'm puzzled how to figure out what I'm doing
wrong.
Background: I'm setting up BackupPC to back up my Windows clients using
rsync. I've installed cwRsync to the clients. BackupPC uses nmblookup to
find the client's IP address given its Windows NETBIOS name.
